Sealant for iron roof. Types of roofing sealants

No matter how high-quality and modern the roofing is, it is necessary to think in advance about protecting the most vulnerable places, and especially the joints of the material, from moisture and other destructive influences. Roof sealant does a good job of insulating it: with its help, you can quickly and without any hassle cope with the task. Roofing sealants are polymeric materials based on compounds of various rubbers and bitumens. Due to plasticity, flexibility, moisture and air impermeability, as well as excellent adhesion, it is possible to use them to isolate the joints of all known materials. Moreover, roofing sealant can be used in the temperature range of -55 ... +80 o C.

Varieties

Depending on the base, it is customary to distinguish several main types of sealant:

  • acrylic;
  • silicone (rubber);
  • bituminous;
  • polyurethane.

Each has its own specifics, scope, which is why, before going to the nearest hardware store, you should have a good understanding of each variety - this will help you make the right choice.

Silicone sealant

Perhaps the most popular roofing sealant is silicone. High moisture and airtight properties, plasticity and excellent adhesion to most surfaces are largely provided by the base - yloxane rubber. Moreover, it is silicone (rubber) roofing sealant that is able to withstand high temperatures (even prolonged heating), as well as direct sunlight, which makes it suitable for sealing roofs even from

Acrylic sealant

Acrylic-based roofing sealant is most often used to treat seams, cracks and joints between canvases. It demonstrates the greatest efficiency in cases where there is a possibility of displacement of adjacent canvases in relation to each other as a result of sharp temperature fluctuations, as well as significant physical activity. Modern manufacturers use siliconized additives that bring acrylic roofing sealant closer in properties and characteristics to silicone. At the same time, its cost remains still more democratic. Most often, acrylic-based products are used to work with a porous base, such as brick, concrete - here it demonstrates maximum efficiency.

It can be not only white, but also transparent. Due to antifungal additives, it is possible to protect it from the effects of mold and fungus bacteria and significantly extend its service life.

If you're looking for a metal roofing sealant, look no further than a bitumen-based product. In this case, you will get excellent performance and high adhesion to the metal substrate. Bituminous sealant is represented by bitumen with the addition of aluminum pigment - this is necessary to mask the material on the roof surface. Due to the pigment, the composition acquires a rich metallic hue. This is a really great plastic material, ideal for holding roofing works. Bituminous sealant has incorporated a number of important properties and characteristics. First of all, it is durability and resistance to various kinds of influences, including moisture and temperature extremes. Moreover, it is really pleasant and convenient to work with it, and all thanks to excellent adhesion not only with dry, but also with a wet base. Bitumen-based sealant is ideal for filling cracks, joints and voids between as well as junctions of the roof with the ridge and chimney - it not only insulates well, but also fixes individual components.

When working with bituminous sealant, high toxicity should be taken into account, which is why it is suitable exclusively for outdoor work. In no case do not use the remains of the composition inside the living quarters. Summing up, I would like to note the most pronounced characteristics and properties of this material:

  • strength;
  • elasticity;
  • moisture resistance;
  • the possibility of coloring;
  • chemical inertness;
  • adhesion to most bases;
  • affordable price.

Polyurethane sealant

The basis of polyurethane sealant is a polymerized resin. Due to the creation of special production conditions, compliance with the temperature regime, it is possible to achieve the necessary viscosity of the material. This is what makes it possible to use it for sealing flat roofs. Polyurethane sealant showed excellent performance when exposed to low temperatures. There are several varieties of this composition:

  • sealing - for working with a dry base;
  • waterproofing - for working with a damp base and coming into contact with moisture.

Polyurethane sealant is quite popular among modern builders, and all thanks to a number of characteristics. The latter include:

  • chemical inertness;
  • resistance to damage and temperature effects;
  • the possibility of staining;
  • profitability;
  • durability.

Perhaps the only drawback of polyurethane-based sealant is its rather high price. But due to the durability and economy of consumption, it is fully justified. Moreover, it is polyurethane-based roofing sealant that is considered universal. And all thanks to its adhesion to most known surfaces: wood, metal, brick, concrete.

Tape sealant

If you are looking for a material that is pleasant to work with and yet effective enough, you will definitely like roof sealant tape. The basis here is butyl rubber, which gives the material unique properties and characteristics. Tape sealants withstand various temperature fluctuations well, as well as exposure to direct sunlight, due to which they are excellent for roofing. Tapes have high adhesive power, making it easy to installation work: just attach the product to the junction of the material, press firmly - and you will get a reliable and durable, and most importantly, tight connection.

Metal roof insulation

If you decide to arrange metal roofs, then the sealant for its insulation must have excellent adhesion to metal surfaces, withstand vibrations, and the effects of precipitation. These properties are possessed by sealants based on bitumen and polyurethane. To work with them, you must first degrease the base with an ordinary solvent.

Roof insulation from corrugated board

The device of such a roof involves horizontal and vertical fixation of the roofing material. In this case, acrylic, silicone, etc. are not bad. Before work, you need to degrease the base and make sure that it is dry - only in this case you can count on high efficiency.

Soft roof insulation

Need a sealant soft roof? Then you should focus on varieties based on bitumen. To isolate the joints of a flat roof, it is better to use a bituminous sealant for the resulting joints. It gives a strong, durable and high-quality connection, resistant to temperature fluctuations and all negative weather manifestations.

Tytan - the answer of modern manufacturers

Tytan roof sealant is an invention modern manufacturers building materials. This is a one-component, plastic and viscous composition, which is based on a combination of bitumen and rubber. This is an excellent sealant, characterized by increased adhesion to a metal and bituminous base. It does not matter if it is dry or wet - Tytan does not slip from the surface, provides high-quality and durable insulation. It is used to connect the joints of roofing material and repair work.

Two-component sealants

A two-component rubber-based sealant demonstrates maximum efficiency when working with wood, brick, concrete. It is characterized by plasticity, chemical inertness and durability. This is a great option for those cases when you need to get a smooth and beautiful seam. Two-component sealant withstands significant temperature fluctuations, easy to use.

Features of use

Most often, sealants go on sale in tubes with a volume of 310 ml. To work with them, you will need a special "gun", which can be purchased at any hardware store. With its help, it is possible to economically consume the material, as well as to obtain a perfectly even and durable seam.

It is much more efficient to work with a dry and fat-free base. Even if the sealer involves working with a damp base, it is best to avoid this if possible. To work with the composition, you will need special nozzles with which you can get a seam of the required thickness - they, again, can be purchased at a specialized hardware store.

It is necessary to work carefully, carefully, so as not to overdo it with soft and plastic material. After completion of the work, it is necessary to make sure that the composition fits snugly to the base and edges of the roof - this is a guarantee of a reliable and tight connection.

High-quality roof insulation is the key to its durability and reliability. That is why it is so important to regularly inspect the roof, repair the seams that have opened, and the cracks that have formed. For this you should only use quality materials. And it is not at all necessary to resort to the help of professionals - most of the work can be done on your own.

When carrying out roofing repairs, there is often a need to close cracks and crevices that have arisen in the roof during its operation. Bituminous sealants are an ideal solution to various "roofing" problems.

You can often encounter various types of leaks, which cause a lot of discomfort and inconvenience, and you don’t always want to carry out a comprehensive replacement of the roofing material. For this, bituminous sealants were created, which have a number of advantages that allow you to repair the roof as soon as possible and on your own.

The main advantages of bituminous sealants are good adhesion to all surfaces, resistance to water and various atmospheric influences. It should also be noted the ease of use of this type of sealant on wet surfaces and the protection of the roof from the appearance of rust, which contributes to the rapid destruction of materials.

Bituminous sealants are characterized by fast drying, which ensures quick and easy repairs. The setting time of the sealant is less than half an hour, and it takes two to four hours to fully cure, however, on some surfaces, bituminous sealants can finally harden only after at least two weeks.

Proper use of bituminous sealants ensures their long service life, which ranges from 15 to 20 years. When applying sealant, the following basic rules must be followed:

  • before applying bituminous sealants, the surface must be cleaned and degreased with a solvent;
  • it is desirable to use sealants at positive temperatures from +5°C to + 30°C;
  • the sealant must be applied in several thin layers, which will ensure the most rapid and high-quality drying;
  • the layer of applied sealant should be from 0.5 to 1 millimeter, while its average consumption per square meter should not exceed from 0.8 to 1.8 kilograms;
  • when using bituminous sealants on porous surfaces, these bases should be pre-primed and wait for them to dry completely.

It should be noted that bituminous sealants can be used not only for sealing roof gaps and cracks, this type of sealant is successfully used for sealing, sealing and filling foundation cracks, drainage system, plinth and other surfaces.

The GERM company offers to buy sealants in small and large wholesale, which will directly affect the timely repair and construction works and will also save you a lot of time and money.

For a high-quality roof installation, the correct laying of the roofing is not enough - you need to take care of the strong insulation of the most problematic places (location areas additional details, joints, etc.) from precipitation. Roofing sealant is used for this type of work. The name is translated into Russian as “dry”, “inaccessible to air”, “tightly”.

Material characteristic

The sealant is a special substance of viscous, pasty and fluid consistency, made on the basis of organosilicon and polysulfide liquid rubbers, polymers. It is used to ensure the impermeability of various joints and joints. The substance is applied to bolts, rivets, and other connections.

sealant- material of new generation. Its distinctive qualities are strength, reliability, elasticity. Important benefits of this substance are its moisture and air impermeability. The choice of a specific sealant depends on the type of surface for which it will be used.

The substance retains its physical properties in a fairly wide temperature range: from minus 55 to plus 80 degrees.

Types of sealants

Depending on the basis, all sealants are divided into four main types:

  • silicone;
  • bituminous;
  • acrylic;
  • polyurethane.

silicone or rubber

The sealant type is the most common. The basis of the material is silicone rubber. Sold in 310 ml tubes. It is multifunctional: it is often used in everyday life for joints, movable external seams, when assembling panels, frames, verandas, when working with ceramics, wood and glass.

High degree resistance to sudden temperature fluctuations and ultraviolet radiation makes it very popular in roofing work.

Silicone sealants, in turn, are divided into subspecies: acetic (acetate) and neutral.

A distinctive feature of acetic sealant is a significantly higher level of strength compared to neutral.

It is suitable for use on smooth surfaces– for example, when working with glass. The main disadvantage of acid sealant is the presence of a sharp pungent odor, which, however, quickly disappears after complete drying.

Neutral sealants completely odorless and less toxic. They are used for work in the bathroom, in the kitchen, and other rooms. The distinctive qualities of this subspecies are excellent adhesion to wood, glass, ceramic surfaces, enamel, porcelain, etc.

bituminous sealant

Used for metal roofing.

The material is developed on the basis of modified bitumen, to which aluminum pigment is added. It is a fluid mass with a beautiful aluminum tint.

Among its advantages can be called super-resistance, elasticity, durability. The material is easily painted and is not subject to aging. It has a high level of water resistance and excellent adhesion to both dry and wet surfaces.

This type of sealant is used to seal various voids, cracks and seams formed in metal roofing. They can strengthen roofing ridges, chimneys, gutters, ventilation and any other metal surfaces.

Since the material is very toxic, it can only be used when working on the outside of the building.

There are a few types of bituminous roofing sealant, which are resistant not only to snow, rain, sunlight, but also to solvents, various oils, gasoline and many other chemicals.

Sealants of this type are in most cases used to level cracks, fill joints and seams in structures, smooth joints in windows, walls, floors. Their use is advisable at those points where there is a risk of displacement of the connected structures or parts under the influence of temperature fluctuations, mechanical loads, humidity, shrinkage, wind, vibration and sound.

Modern acrylic sealants are produced on the basis of siliconized modified additives. Their properties are identical to those of silicone. High Quality but more affordable.

Sealants of this type have excellent adhesion to brick, concrete, tiles, fiberboard, PVC, painted, varnished surfaces, porous bases. They are resistant to temperature fluctuations, ultraviolet radiation, can withstand heat, cold, excessive dryness and high humidity.

Acrylic sealants retain their qualities in the temperature range from minus 40 to plus 80 degrees, perfectly withstand mechanical stress.

This substance does not deteriorate under the influence of moisture: its water absorption is 0.5%. The material can be successfully used in conditions of high humidity. Thanks to antifungal additives, the sealant protects surfaces from the development of mold and mildew.

Transparent sealant based on acrylic appearance does not differ from silicone. It gives a perfectly transparent sealed seam, suitable for both indoor and outdoor work. They can be used to seal siding, ventilation openings, etc.

Polyurethane sealant produced on the basis of polymerized special conditions resins. It is an elastic viscous homogeneous mass, which is easily applied to any surface. This is the most durable and reliable material used for sealing. Although it is more expensive than other types, it fully pays for the costs due to its quality characteristics and high degree of efficiency.

Polyurethane sealant can be worked at fairly low temperatures. During repairs, they close up interpanel seams, insulate double-glazed windows, pools, and winter gardens. A high degree of resistance to temperature fluctuations and high humidity allows the use of this substance in roofing work.

There are several types of polyurethane sealants.:

  • sealing - designed for dry surfaces;
  • waterproofing - for use in conditions of high levels of humidity, as well as for surfaces in direct contact with water.

The product is easy to apply and hardens quickly. It is very economical to use as it requires a small amount of sealant to work.

The substance retains its quality characteristics over a long period of time, does not peel off and is not subject to destruction.

Polyurethane sealant is used to treat surfaces that need to be protected from moisture, ultraviolet radiation, and the growth of microorganisms. Usage this material in the implementation of roofing work allows you to provide elevated level strength of the constructed structure.

Polyurethane sealant comes in different degrees of hardness. When working on roofing, sealing roofing, processing joints of metal, wooden, concrete, PVC surfaces with building structures, a substance with a hardness level of PU 15 is used. Surfaces made of reinforced concrete, concrete, glass and metal are treated with a sealant of hardness PU 40. For metal structures PU 50 material is used.

Polyurethane sealant is resistant to mechanical stress, moisture, chemical compounds (acids, gasoline, oils), does not corrode, sets and dries very quickly, and can be easily painted.

It is used to connect tiles, metal structures, details of a wooden roof.

Work with this material can be carried out even in winter, but it is better to refrain from using it in sunny weather: the substance deteriorates from the sun.

Features of working with sealant

Works on sealing joints, junctions, deformed seams using different types sealants must be carried out according to certain rules.

  • First you need to prepare the surface.

To do this, they must be cleaned of dust, dirt, residues of the solution or the old layer of sealant.

When working in winter time the surface is cleared of snow, frost and frost. This can be done with an electric brush and manually. To obtain an even seam, you can stick a special tape on the outer edges of the surface, which is removed after completion of work.

If you need a very high-quality adhesion (adhesion) of the sealant to the joint surface, it is necessary to prime the inner edges of the joint with a primer. During the preparation of the surface, its cleanliness can be considered satisfactory if the applied test part of the sealant adheres to the surface to be treated. It should not curl under the spatula.

  • Very often, when carrying out work on sealing the roof, it becomes necessary to create an elastic base on which the mastic will be applied.
  • The sealant should be applied to the mouths of the joints of the sealed surfaces, while sealing anti-adhesion gaskets are used. They provide additional thermal insulation and reduce the amount of material consumed in the seam.

With a significant depth of the seams, such gaskets act as depth limiters and allow you to create seams of the required depth and width, which allows you to use much less material. In most cases, polyethylene and polyurethane foam bundles are used as gaskets.

The gasket installed at the mouth of the joints is certainly compressed by 20–30% of the initial diameter. For this reason, it is recommended to buy pads different diameters taking into account the probable variation in the width of the gaps of the joints in the course of the installation of prefabricated parts.

  • Sealing gaskets are placed in a continuous line, without gaps (breaks).

In order not to damage the surface of the gasket, it must be wound without effort, using a rounded wooden spatula.

The connection of the gaskets is made along the length of the mustache. To do this, use adhesive cloth or polyethylene insulating tape, while the junction must be at least 30 cm from the point of intersection of the vertical and horizontal joints. Before installing the gaskets, the mouth must be thoroughly cleaned.

Working with sealant has its own characteristics in terms of proper preparation the material itself.

One-component sealants are produced ready for use.

As for two-component mastics, their ingredients - the bulk and the hardener - must be mixed, while strictly observing the ratios of weight proportions and the sequence indicated in the instructions.

Before starting the preparation of the substance, it is necessary to make sure that the delivery set corresponds to that specified in the instructions. Both components are combined - they are packaged in the required ratio and are ready for mixing. The container for the main component serves as a mixing vessel.

The quality characteristics of the sealant, which will appear during operation, depend on the quality of the ingredients.

Mixing of components can be done using a special electric tool. At the same time, care must be taken to ensure that the hardener does not splatter.

When using a drill, choose a model with adjustable speed and a helical agitator. Its power should be 0.6-0.8 kW. Standard packaging is mixed in about 15 minutes.

The finished mass should have a uniform structure and uniform color, it should not contain visible inclusions. To achieve a similar state of the substance, stirring is carried out in the direction from the center and edges, then back, then from the bottom up and vice versa.

It must be remembered that the viscosity of the sealant increases under the influence of low temperatures, so it is better to store and mix the components in a heated room.

The sealant must not be diluted with a solvent, since in this case so-called curing inhibitors can enter the substance, which lead to a violation of the composition and a change in the properties of the finished mastic. In particular, the sealant may lose its thixotropy, which will lead to the appearance of cracks during operation.

Another feature of working with sealing materials is that they cannot be used on ice-covered, frosty surfaces, on insufficiently hardened and dried concrete, and also at temperatures below minus 25 degrees.

The most stringent requirements apply to outdoor work: sealing roofing, its elements, joints, external walls, since the operating conditions in these cases are the most difficult. Sealing of joints is carried out either during installation or after its completion.

Very often, sealing is required during repair and restoration work. Depending on the depth of the seam, two technologies are used for sealing: surface and potting.

The use of surface technology is advisable when the depth of the expansion joint is not more than 0.5 cm. In other cases, pouring technology is used: with it, sealing is carried out using anti-adhesive gaskets.

The mastic prepared in advance is applied to the surfaces to be joined using a syringe gun or spatula: they are best used when working with deep and narrow seams.

Even on the thinnest sections, the thickness of the sealant layer must be at least 4 mm. The substance is evenly applied at the mouths of all joints. It is necessary to ensure that there are no gaps, influxes, voids.

The surface of the already applied sealant must be leveled using a special tool made to suit a certain shape. outer surface seam and its width. You can also use a regular spatula. So that the sealant does not stick to the tool, it should be pre-wetted with soapy water.

Each type of sealant has its own characteristics, which must also be taken into account when carrying out work. So, silicone sealant sets in 30 minutes. The rate of its complete polymerization is determined by the thickness of the seam. With this material, you can work in a fairly wide temperature range - from plus 50 to minus 20 degrees.

Acrylic sealant is fully cured in 21 days. It takes 20 minutes to set it up. Adhesion should be checked within one hour.

Polyurethane sealant cures in 14 days. It sets in 1.5 hours. If the seam is damaged, it can be re-treated. During work, gloves and a respirator must be worn.

The application of bituminous sealant should be carried out in thin layers and certainly at positive temperatures. High-quality sealing of the roof will increase the time interval between major repairs.

Prices

The cost of the sealant depends on the specific type, specifications, manufacturer. Below are approximate prices for 300 ml packs of material:

  • rubber roofing sealant - from 135 to 200 rubles;
  • bituminous sealant (for metal roofing) - 196 rubles;
  • polyurethane sealant for seams - from 154 to 250 rubles;
  • silicone sealant - from 160 to 225 rubles.

CONCLUSIONS

In the video instructions on how to carefully fill the seams with sealant.

It is not enough to lay the roof covering correctly, it is also necessary to reliably isolate problem areas (joints, areas of location additional elements) from the rain and snow "hello" of the heavenly office. AT similar works a roofing sealant is used - a special viscous substance based on polysulfide and organosilicon liquid rubbers. Temperature range at which sealants do not lose their protective properties, quite extensive - from minus 55 ° C to plus 80 ° C.

All existing sealants are subdivided into types depending on the type of base. There are four of them: silicone, acrylic, polyurethane and bituminous.

Silicone sealant

This type of insulating material is multifunctional, it is used not only for sealing the roof, but also for working with wood, ceramics, glass. It is used when installing window frames and doorways. Due to its excellent resistance to temperature extremes and sunlight, it is quite popular for roofing. For roofs, one of its varieties is used - roofing sealant.

Acrylic sealant

Sealants of this type are used mainly for smoothing joints in walls, floors and windows, as well as for leveling cracks. Acrylic-based sealant is not elastic, so it is rarely used for outdoor work.

Polyurethane sealant

Ideal for outdoor work. It is used for gluing and sealing wood, stone, concrete, metal and other building materials. Roof sealant of this type is indispensable for minor repairs.

bituminous sealant

Due to its toxicity, this material can only be used when working outside the building. Varieties of bituminous sealant are resistant not only to rain, snow and sun, but also to chemicals - various oils, solvents and gasoline. The composition for sealing joints on a metal roof is based on modified bitumen.

Pros and cons of different types of roof sealants

In order to know exactly which sealant is best suited to a particular type of roofing, you need to know the properties of this substance - both positive and negative.

Properties of sealants on silicone

  • resistance to ultraviolet and atmospheric influences;
  • high resistance to fungus and mold;
  • a wide variety of colors;
  • high degree of adhesion to most building materials.
  • poor adhesion to plastics (polyethylene, polypropylene, fluoroplastic, polycarbonate);
  • lack of hitch with a wet surface;
  • incompatibility with conventional dyes.

Quality of acrylic sealants

  • superadhesion to porous surfaces;
  • lack of smell;
  • does not contain any solvents;
  • huge color range;
  • after hardening, it can be both varnished and painted;
  • there is a moisture resistant variety suitable for roof sealing.
  • when applied, the surface must be completely dry;
  • at sub-zero temperatures there are difficulties in application.

Polyurethane sealants

  • resistance to corrosion;
  • excellent adhesion to all types of building materials;
  • resistance to ultraviolet;
  • immunity to alkalis, acids and salts;
  • setting speed;
  • preservation of volume;
  • consistency that does not allow to drain on the surface;
  • easily dyed.

There are practically no minuses, with the exception of the content of harmful substances in the composition. But this is not particularly important if you use them for outdoor roofing.

bitumen sealants

  • resistance to low temperatures;
  • high adhesion;
  • acceptable cost;
  • Possibility of application on wet surfaces.
  • single color - only black version;
  • does not tolerate high temperatures very well.

Roof sealing work

Having decided on the type of suitable sealant, you need to prepare the roof surface for work, it must be dry and clean. You can use a mounting gun or apply the substance directly from the tube. The main thing is that there are no air gaps in the seams.

Silicone roofing sealant sets in half an hour. The rate of complete polymerization depends on the thickness of the seam. It is possible to work with silicone material from +50 °С to -20 °С.

Polymerization of acrylic sealant in full takes 21 days, it seizes in 20 minutes, adhesion is checked within an hour.

Polyurethane-based sealant is fully polymerized in two weeks, sets in an hour and a half. If the seam is damaged, it can be re-processed. Gloves and a respirator are required for work.

Bituminous sealant is applied at temperatures above zero - in thin layers.

The highest quality roof sealing guarantees an increase in the time intervals between major repairs.

Durable and reliable - the dream of every home owner.

Quality roofing materials and them correct styling will not be sufficient for complete protection against precipitation.

Metal coatings are considered newfangled and hardy, but not all homeowners know how and how to treat problem areas after laying.

Roofing sealant for metal will help solve this problem.

Hermetic paste for metal roofing should have the following qualities:

  • Be highly elastic.
  • Have good adhesion to metal surfaces.
  • Maintain strength and tightness under the influence of vibrations.
  • Possess high water repellency.
  • Be weather resistant.

There are two types of hermetic pastes for metal surfaces, which differ in transition to working condition:

  • The sealant is non-curing. It is distinguished by the invariance of its qualities, after. Best suited for sealing border lines of various types and shapes. Possesses high ability adhesion to metal surfaces and excellent water repellency. All properties of the sealant can be maintained at temperatures from -50 to +150 degrees. Available in the form of sealing tapes or paste-like consistency. Seam lines are best sealed with double-sided tapes.
  • The sealant is curable. May change its structure due to loss of moisture or as a result of transformations associated with chemical reaction. Its application differs from non-curing dilution, which is carried out immediately before the start of joint sealing.

It is worth noting that after mixing the solution, it must be used within 3 hours.

Sealants of one-component type are ready for use and are sold in special cylinders.

Two-component require preliminary mixing of the main component with a hardener.

Remember! The mixing process must be done with extreme care and strictly follow the instructions.

  • Do not use containers other than the container of the main component.
  • When stirring the product, avoid splashing it.
  • A construction mixer will help to achieve thorough mixing.
  • It is recommended to stir for about 20 minutes, constantly changing direction.
  • Color ready mix should be even.
  • The mass should have an average density.
  • The mixing process must be carried out in warm otherwise the mass will be viscous.

Types of roofing hermetic compositions for metal

The following types of hermetic compositions are suitable for sealing metal surfaces.

  1. Polyurethane sealant for metal. It is based on polymerized resin components. It is widely used for sealing joints on any surfaces. Most often used for metal roofing. The price per bottle is relatively low.

The advantages include: good tolerance of rays, high acidity, salt and alkali deposits, the possibility of staining after solidification, a viscous consistency, which facilitates use, resistance to rust, frost resistance.

Speaking of the minuses, we can note the high toxicity of the composition. But since the use of sealant is provided outside the premises, the harmful effects on humans are reduced to a minimum.

  1. Sealant for metal bituminous. The composition is based on a modified bituminous compound. It is considered the most popular sealant for sealing the roof. It can be produced both in cylinders and in the form of a double-sided tape. Cannot be used at sub-zero temperatures.

The positive qualities include: the ability to apply to a wet surface, can be used on any type, after drying it becomes resistant to frost, fits well on the surface.

The disadvantages include: it is produced exclusively in black, it loses strength when high temperatures air, does not differ in durability.

  1. Butyl rubber. The composition of the product includes substances such as isoprene and isobutylene. The copolymerization of these components forms butyl rubber, which is valued for moisture resistance and impermeability. Available as paste seals and double-sided tapes in various widths.

Valued for: high elasticity of the tapes, the ability to maintain its structure without cracks for a long time, increased adhesion, the ability to follow the contours of the joining lines, firmly gluing to any material.

The disadvantages are: when pulled, strength is lost, the service life is about 5 years.

It is important to know that the use of hermetic compounds with a silicone base is prohibited on metal with the use of seam overlap.

Sealing tape

Sealant in the form of a tape is considered a budget material and the best way suitable for roofing.

  • Butyl rubber is considered the main component of the material.
  • The most reliable is considered a tape roofing sealant for metal. He endures the winter period with ease and is invulnerable to ultraviolet radiation.
  • Possesses excellent stickiness and is easily mounted on a seam surface.
  • Well seals gaps between roofing sheets. It is used to seal cracks and, as well as all holes formed during the construction of the roof and its additions.

Hermetic compositions for corrugated roofing

The impermeability of corrugated board and metal tiles is identical. It's all about the slope, thanks to which all the connecting lines of corrugated sheets fall under protection. Run reliable sealing sheets can be adhering to a number of rules:

  • For best result choose hermetic based on silicone, acrylic or polyurethane.
  • The joint lines to be processed must have a clean and dry surface.
  • The composition is applied in a thin smooth layer. Ideal material in the form of tape.
  • Sealant is used to process joints, recesses for fasteners and other surfaces with fragile parts of the floor.
  • Sealing takes place within 2 days and will directly depend on weather conditions.

As soon as the sealant reaches the state of complete drying, it turns into a dense rubber, which will provide reliable joints from possible moisture penetration.

Remember! The groove must be sealed with a profiled sealing compound.

Hermetic compounds for metal roofing

Despite the fact that the metal tile has similarities with corrugated board, it has individual nuances of sealing methods:

  • For gaps of 5 mm, silicone sealing paste or butyl-based tape is used.
  • The sealant can be replaced with profiled gaskets that can follow the contours of the structure being laid.
  • In order for the result to meet expectations, sealants with high resistance to ultraviolet rays are used.
  • Their roofing implies the mandatory sealing of all joints, antenna output, ventilation slots and edging lines of the furnace apron.
  • If the slope of the roof reaches 14 degrees, it is advisable to seal the transverse and longitudinal docking lines of the metal tiles with a sealant.

Hermetic compositions for soft roofs

Soft roofing is gaining momentum in popularity. Sealing of joints and seams will occur as follows:

  • In case of flat roof use liquid rubber, bituminous sealant or resin.
  • For partial sealing, a one-component liquid rubber or tensile sealant is used.
  • For the processing of butt joints, a mastic is suitable, which can be applied to wet materials and has excellent adhesion.

Roofing hermetic paste "Titan"

Titanium is a soft sealant, which includes bituminous and rubber components. Has high adhesion to all metallic materials. It has a viscous consistency and is resistant to natural factors. Widely used for:

  • Hermetic treatment of joints, seam lines and hollow surfaces on all parts of the roof.
  • Sealing leaks on the roof of their metal tiles, corrugated board and other types of iron.
  • Strengthening of fasteners on all parts of gutter structures.

Two-component hermetic composition for roofing

The main component of the composition is silicone rubber. The difference from the sealant "Titan" lies in a number of properties:

  • It is made in the form of mastic.
  • Differs in ease in drawing.
  • Resistant to both severe frosts and high temperatures.
  • Has good adhesion with metal, wooden, materials.
  • The resulting seam is strong and durable.

The cost of roofing sealants

The cost of hermetic compounds will depend on the components and brand of the manufacturer. average price per balloon will be:

  • Bituminous paste - from 200 rubles.
  • Polyurethane composition - from 150 rubles.
  • Silicone composition - from 170 rubles.
  • Hermetic tape - from 130 rubles.

Working with sealant

Works with hermetic means are carried out at all stages of roof construction.

They are used to eliminate cracks, holes, seal seams, as well as when carrying out restoration work on old roofs.

It is worth noting that the most popular sealant based on bitumen.

Rubber-based products are no less reliable and differ in quality and durability.

The sealing of roofing joints does not provide for the presence of an ideal seam, therefore, the methods of applying the product can be divided into two types:

  • surface application method.
  • Fill method.

To date, silicone-based hermetic paste has gained particular popularity. Its application is so easy that there is no need to invite roofers.

However, there are some peculiarities in working with such material. Suppose, in order for the sealing to be successful, must be observed correct ratios between the depth of the gap and its width. standard size the seam is considered a ratio of 2 to 3.

Often the gap in depth is greater than it should be. In this case, to bring it to normal, enclose polyethylene rollers.

If you do not have a special roller for these purposes, it can be made from improvised means such as: bags, film, bags.

To correct inaccuracies in the width of the seam, a polyethylene tourniquet is placed on three planes.

Before applying the hermetic paste, the required surface is cleaned of dust and debris, grease stains are removed.

To achieve an even and smooth seam, spatulas of the same width with a gap are used.

The tool must be specialized and used exclusively for sealing.

In order for the viscous mass to solidify, it will take about 2 days. Drying time may be longer if the joint is very deep.

In addition to all of the above, with hermetic means requires compliance with the rules:

  • Surface preparation.
  • It is not recommended to carry out work during ice. If the situation does not tolerate, then snow, frost and ice are removed with a special brush.
  • To achieve evenness of the seam, adhesive construction tape is glued along its edges, which is removed after application.
  • If it is required to improve the adhesion of the sealant to the metal, they resort to priming the surface with a primer.
  • The surface will be considered clean if, when applying the hermetic paste, it is not taken in lumps on the spatula.

Metal roofing sealing technique

Seam gaps and places of fasteners are filled with bituminous and polyurethane sealants.

All work is carried out in several stages:

  • Dust removal.
  • Rust removal.
  • Removal of excess fat, using a solvent.
  • Surface drying.
  • Application of a hermetic composition to the seam.

For corrugated roofing, it is more expedient to use adhesive tape lubricated with a hermetic solution. On one side, the protective film is removed and the tape is pressed with force to the cleaned and dry docking line of the profiled sheet. For safety, the edges are rolled out with a roller.

Application nuances:

  • Sealant is not used when icing.
  • Do not work with the product in severe frost or hot weather.
  • Do not use hot steam baths to clean materials.
  • A construction syringe will help facilitate the application work.
  • The applied layer must be at least 5 mm, regardless of the thickness of the material.
  • The applied hermetic mixture is smoothed with a spatula until it reaches flat surface. The tool must have the same width as the seam.
  • To avoid sticking of the product to the spatula, it is moistened in soapy water.

Difficult places with a difficult surface require the use of tapes with an embossed and rough base.

Troubleshooting Common Problems

  • The roof has a slight slope. In this case, the roof details will have both longitudinal and transverse overlaps. To prevent the ingress of moisture, hermetic paste, mastics, adhesive tape and polyethylene bundles are used.
  • It is necessary to insulate the ventilation and antenna outlets, the edge of the chimney. In this case, both single-sided and double-sided tape are used.
  • Sealing of slope skates. Thanks to this action, the problem of snow and rain will be eliminated, and ventilation in the space between the ridge and the eaves will improve.
  • Seam knots and their sealing. For these purposes, a hermetic agent of soft consistency is used. It is applied to one side of the tape and laid between the elements, securing with self-tapping screws.
  • Bridge of cold and its insulation. The problem occurs in buildings where the rafter part is made of metal. It is excluded by applying insulation so that the joints do not match. Hiding under the finishing insulation, one side of which is covered with a hermetic agent, and the other is covered with aluminum foil.

All of the above rules are the key to successful roofing. Roofing sealant for metal is exposed to various natural conditions around the clock, so the nuances of working with it will affect its durability.
