Heuchera is green with white veins. Heuchera flower growing from seeds planting and care in the open field
Heuchera flowers are quite popular among gardeners and are widely used in landscape design. This herbaceous perennial came to us from North America, and it was named after the German botanist Johann Heinrich von Geicher. This culture is in demand by gardeners, first of all, for its decorative functions. The leaves of the plant have the ability to change their color several times during the growing season, which allows the use of geyhera in a wide variety of flower arrangements.
Among cultivated species of geyhera, there is a huge variety of varieties. Below we will consider the options most often grown in the gardens of our country:
The subtleties of growing geyheraBefore growing geyhera, you should know some features of this plant:
Geichera - planting and careTime and place for planting cropsThe ideal time for planting this plant in the ground is the first half of spring - March and April. The culture feels great in shaded areas, so it is best to have a flower bed on the east or west side of the house, under a spreading tree or in another similar place. If your backyard does not have a sufficiently shaded area, you can plant a geyhera in the sun and provide it with regular abundant watering. It is worth noting that decorative leafy varieties under bright sunlight acquire a more attractive shade of leaves. And for geyhera with pink and red foliage, it is recommended to select a well-lit sunny area. Soil features for the plantOne of the main conditions for growing geyhera is the right soil. This culture will perfectly take root in fertile light soil with neutral acidity. The ideal pH level for geyhera is 5-6 units. You can increase the alkalinity of the earth by adding chalk or wood ash immediately before planting. Ash, in addition, will be a good fertilizer for your flowers. Among other things, for growing geyhera it is important to ensure good soil drainage. Water should not be allowed to stagnate at the roots, since excess moisture will provoke the appearance of rot and the plant will die. It is quite simple to make drainage: before planting the geyhera, pour a small amount of expanded clay or brick fragments into the dug hole. In wet weather or excessive watering, the drainage layer will absorb excess liquid, and during a drought period, the roots of the plant will be able to take moisture from the drainage. If you purchased geyhera seedlings in early spring, when it is still too early to plant them in open ground, transplant the crop into suitable containers and leave it in a room or in a greenhouse for a while. When the threat of spring frost has passed, the geyhera can be moved to a permanent place in open soil. In the event that you bought a plant in a pot, when transplanting, carefully clean the roots from the substrate and trim their tips. If you see that a geyhera has a large number of leaves, but its root system is poorly developed, then remove some of the largest foliage. In this case, the plant will take root well in a new place, and its roots will become stronger. During planting, immerse the roots in the hole so that there is no empty air space between them, and the core of the outlet is not sprinkled with soil. Heuchera CareProper care of this crop involves timely watering with a sufficient amount of liquid. Although geuchera does not like excess moisture, it also does not grow very well in arid soil. Especially negatively poor watering affects the plant during the flowering period. Keep the ground around the bushes moderately moist. When watering, try to make sure that the water soaks the soil to a sufficient depth. Irrigation is best done twice a day, morning and evening. So that moisture is retained in the ground long enough and the roots do not dry out, every fall, mulch the soil around the bushes with foliage, straw, or peat. It is not necessary to feed a geyhera with fertilizers if it grows in optimal light and receives a sufficient amount of moisture. If you decide to add some nutrients to the soil, then do it in moderation. Geyhera can be fed twice a season: before flowering and after the inflorescences fall off. As fertilizers, it is better to use complex compositions with a low nitrogen content. Heuchera pests include snails and slugs. These creatures attack the foliage and spoil the young shoots of the crop. The leaves that the slugs have visited become covered with powdery mildew and rot, and then wither and fall off. Excess moisture adversely affects the health of plants. If water stagnates in the soil, the roots rot and the plant dies. In such a case, you can dig up a diseased bush, cut off healthy branches from it and transplant them as cuttings into a greenhouse. So that the geyhera does not freeze in winter, it is covered with spruce branches or rotted foliage. From above, you can additionally pour a layer of snow or cover the bushes with lutrasil. With the advent of spring, do not rush to remove the covering material, wait for the soil to completely thaw. When it's warm enough outside, unwrap the geyhera and remove the old leaves from it. Pour a little warm water with mineral fertilizers diluted in it under the roots. Geyher breeding methodsGrowing geyhera from seedsThe simplest and easiest way to propagate this crop is to sow seeds. When growing geyhera in this way, you get young bushes with a wonderful appearance. But it should be noted that hybrid varieties, as a rule, with such reproduction can lose their varietal characteristics. You can purchase seeds from a specialty store or from another grower, but a safer and cheaper way is to store your own seed. Just keep in mind that the seeds retain good germination for about 6 months; after six months, some of the grains may simply not sprout. Store seed in a tightly closed airtight container. Planting seeds is carried out in early spring, during the month of March. For sowing, you need to pick up fertile soil, disinfect it, then pour it into suitable containers, moisten and loosen it. On top of the soil, you can also pour a small, 3-4 mm thick, layer of fine sand. After planting the seeds in the ground, place the containers in a shady spot and keep the soil moist. The ambient temperature should be kept at around 22-24°C. Under these conditions, geyhera seedlings will appear approximately 3 weeks after sowing the grains. Slightly grown sprouts should be dived into separate containers and left in the greenhouse until the root system is strong enough to transplant flowers into open ground. Reproduction by dividing the bushSome varieties of geyher require periodic transplantation, because over time their stems stretch, the lower leaves fall off, and the trunk turns out to be bare. To return the plants to a decorative appearance, every 2-3 years they need to be cut and planted in a new hole. Such anti-aging pruning occurs as follows:
If the bushes are not transplanted in time, they can die during the winter months, since the bare stems do not tolerate frost well. Propagation of geyhera by cuttingsWhen propagating by cuttings, you can take the fragment of the plant you need from a flowering bush. There is no need to dig out the whole geyhera. Look for branches with buds at the bottom of the plant, cut off the shoots and transfer them to the greenhouse or to a well-shaded area. Treat the branches with potassium-containing preparations and plant them in the ground so that the buds are above the ground. After about 4-5 weeks, the cuttings should take root. After another 1-2 months, the plant can be transferred to an open flower bed. If the cuttings do not take root in the fall, leave them until next spring, covered with spruce branches or other material to protect them from the winter cold. The use of geyher in landscape designThis culture is valuable because it can retain decorative properties for quite a long time. After the leaves grow back and before the autumn frosts, geyhers will look great. This plant is used in a variety of flower arrangements in flower beds, rosettes and borders. Geykhera can decorate the banks of reservoirs, rockeries or alpine slides. Due to the ability to maintain the same shape for a long time, geyhera is often used to create drawings with clear boundaries or strict geometric shapes. This culture goes well with astilba, hosta, primrose, brunera, ornamental cereals. Geichera. Video |
Geichera is a herbaceous plant (the Saxifrage family). Named after a German physician and botanist. The height of the bush reaches half a meter, the plant is distinguished by leaves of an unusually beautiful shape.
Especially geyhera will appeal to aesthetes and people who are fond of landscape design. The color of the leaves is very diverse: red, yellow, orange, pink, green, amber, below are a few photos of geyhera.
It so happened that in landscape design, geyhera is divided into two types: decorative-flowering and decorative-deciduous. It should also be noted that geyhera looks great with roses and daylilies.
The beauty and health of any plant depends on how strong the gardener is in matters such as planting and care, geyhera is no exception, and therefore these issues should be considered in more detail.
Landing geyhera
Ideally, you should try to plant geyhera in semi-shaded areas, where there is a moderate amount of sunlight and mainly in the morning. Otherwise, you need to strictly monitor the regularity of watering.
Geichera grows well in almost any type of soil (it is desirable only that it is not acidic). It should be remembered that the plant cannot tolerate the accumulation of moisture at the roots. Planted geyhera either seeds or seedlings.
Seedling method is preferred. It increases the likelihood of rich and beautiful flowering.
Pre-seedlings are grown in a special greenhouse container. After that, they are transplanted into open ground, 3 cm of depth is enough, the distance from each other is at least 20-30 cm.
It is desirable that the soil be loose, this will provide air to the roots. It germinates in about 20-30 days.
Care
In the first year of growth, it is undesirable to feed the geyhera. It is recommended to regularly, but moderately water it, no more than three times a week. You need to water the area directly under the bush.
On particularly hot days, it is allowed to water several times, mainly in the morning and evening.
Problems that a gardener may face
The main cause of diseases such as spotting, rust and powdery mildew is oversaturation with fertilizers. Also, sometimes the cause of problems is the accumulation of water at the roots.
Powdery mildew can be removed with a fungicide. When spotting appears, it is necessary to pollinate with Bordeaux liquid no more than 2-3 times a month.
For geyhera, both caterpillars and various types of snails are extremely scary, fortunately there is now a large selection of powerful insecticides that are effective in combating these pests.
reproduction
The ideal age for dividing a bush is 3 years. It is preferable to do this either in early autumn or in May. With a knife, the plant is divided into 4 parts, it is necessary that there are at least three rosettes on each resulting part.
In places of cuts you need to rub ground charcoal. Further, parts of the bush are planted in the prepared holes, the distance from each other should be at least 20 cm.
Heuchera can also be propagated by cuttings. It is advisable to do this at the beginning of summer, no later than July. Cuttings are cut from the main bush, then divided into segments of at least 4 cm, and the sections are rubbed from below with a root former.
It is important to partially free them from the leaves in order to reduce evaporation, and then root.
What happens after flowering
Usually flowering lasts the first two months of summer (below are photos of geyhera flowers), then, when it stops, it is advisable to cut flower stalks with withered flowers.
It is advisable to use a shelter made of oak leaves in winter; with the onset of spring, the shelter must be removed.

Landing Rules
Despite the unpretentiousness of the ornamental culture, when planting and transplanting geyhera, it is extremely important to choose the right site and follow the planting technology:
- depending on the varietal characteristics, seedlings of ornamental crops should be planted in areas with good lighting or with little shading; for a significant part of the varieties, semi-shaded places with sufficient lighting in the morning should be planted;
- the site for planting any variety of geyhera should be well protected from stagnation of cold air and the north wind;
- unpretentious plant grows and develops best on light, nutritious, well-drained and permeable soils.
The distance between planted plants may vary depending on varietal characteristics, including the size of the aerial part. After planting, it is necessary to provide flowers with abundant watering, and, if necessary, shading.
Growing from seeds and propagation
Most often, geyhera is propagated by bush division or by rooting cuttings. In the first case, it is necessary to dig up a decorative bush and divide it into several parts. Rarely used method of propagation by seeds.
When seeding, remember the following:
- seed material remains viable for six months after collection;
- seeds packaged in foil packaging have a standard shelf life of no more than eighteen months;
- the soil for sowing seeds should be as loose as possible, with the addition of fine-grained sand or perlite;
- before sowing, the soil mixture should be disinfected under high-temperature conditions;
- surface sowing of seeds is carried out in the first spring months on well-moistened and loosened soil;
- sowing containers should be covered with plastic wrap or any other translucent material;
- subject to the sowing technology, the first shoots appear in about two to three weeks;
- picking seedlings into separate planting containers is carried out when the third leaf appears.
In mid-May, young plants should be hardened for a week, after which the plants are transplanted to a permanent place in open ground.
The main activities for the care of geyhera are very simple and do not require special knowledge, time and effort:
In regions with a cold climate and a long winter period, it is recommended to cover the crop in the late autumn period with oak leaves. Pruning of last year's foliage should be done in early spring, after the winter shelter has been removed from the plants.
Beautiful geyhera in the garden decor
In landscape design, geyhers are very much in demand due to the following positive characteristics and species features:
- the ability to create bright accents against the background of green lawns;
- preservation of decorativeness throughout the season;
- a very rich choice of a huge number of species and varieties;
- the possibility of growing as an ornamental container culture;
- the ability to show a high level of decorativeness both in areas well-lit by the sun and in the shade;
- compactness, unpretentiousness in cultivation, resistance to fairly severe frosts;
- easy reproduction, including from seeds;
- excellent compatibility with most other ornamental plants, including annual and perennial flowering crops;
- great for decorating borders and placing in the foreground;

Heuchera "Moscow Lights", "Purple Tent" and "Caramel", as well as other varieties of plants are very widely used in landscape design to create colorful compositions, which is especially important when it is necessary to fill the free space in the garden or garden plot.
The decorative culture looks great in separate plantings, and the increased splendor and density of the aerial part make geyhera an ideal option for decorating rock gardens and rockeries. Many varieties can be placed in decorative pots and flower containers, allowing you to decorate gazebos, patios and terraces.
Geuchera can be planted in compositions with almost any horticultural crops, but the combination of this ornamental plant with astilbe and bruners, daylilies and veronica, chrysanthemums and ornamental cereals looks best. Heuchera with hostas and ferns, irises and sedium, geraniums and primrose look very impressive.
The numerous and diverse family of geyher has a huge number of varieties. Today, about 70 of them are known. Popular varieties that are used in the design of personal plots do not require special growing conditions and even novice gardeners can care for them. Their photos are widely distributed and it will not be difficult to choose a flower to your taste.
Heuchera varieties
- Variety Palace Purple is considered one of the most spectacular geyher. Her homeland is the Atlantic coast of North America. The bush reaches 50 cm in height. Large glossy leaves of burgundy and brown shades are covered with silvery spots. White and cream flowers appear in June-August, and the leaves adorn gardens from early spring until hard frost.
- Heuchera Hybrid has curly leaves of white and green flowers with plum veins and white speckles. The reverse side of the sheet is red-purple. In June-July, it blooms with white and pale green, pink and coral flowers. Plant height - 25-30 cm.
- Heuchera Caramel rarely blooms, but it is famous for its unique honey-yellow leaves. The height of the bush is about 30 cm. The variety came to us from the southeastern lands of North America, and therefore feels great in summer heat and in a humid climate.
- Variety Purple Castle has dark purple leaves and long white hairs on the shoots. Flowers resemble the shape of a bell. It occurs naturally from British Columbia to the southern coast of California.
- Cappuccino geyhera leaves are bronze on top and purple on the bottom. The brush-shaped flower blooms in early summer. Red inflorescences are crowned with white petals.
- Geichera Regina has a silver-gray leaf color that shimmers with a bluish-lavender hue. The leaf is speckled with dark veins. Pink flowers bloom in May-June.
- The leaves of geyher Marmalade have a yellow-orange color. The underside of the leaf is light purple. Flowers small, greenish. Blooms in the first half of summer.
Soil and lighting requirements
Despite the fact that geyhera is considered an unpretentious flower, there are certain requirements for choosing a place to plant. The brightness of the color of the leaves and the duration of flowering will depend on how illuminated the area for placing the plant will be. You should take into account the characteristics of the variety and recommendations for planting.
Variety Purple Castle prefers partial shade, but is not averse to being lit and the sun's rays in the morning. Heuchera Caramel will grow better in the shade.
As for the composition and quality of the soil, well-drained areas are allocated for the plant. In places where water stagnates, the roots of the plant will rot, which will lead to the inevitable death of the geyhera. The plant is unpretentious, but will feel better on light, nutritious neutral or acidic soils.
Accommodation in the garden
The best place for growing geyhera is to place it in the sliding lacy shade of tree crowns. It will serve as an excellent ground cover crop in place of a lawn, and will also have an annual cover of fallen leaves.
This is a perennial that retains its shape for a long time, so it would be a good solution to use it as a border for flower beds or garden paths. It looks good in an ensemble with astilbe, geranium, brunera, bergenia, daylilies, primroses, ornamental cereals. Geichera is combined with dwarf shrubs and roses. In landscape design, plants are used in the design of rockeries and rock gardens.
Planting and growing geyhera
Geichera is propagated by two methods: seeds and vegetatively. Species varieties are grown from seeds. This method is more complicated, but a diligent gardener will be provided with high-quality planting material in the future. By dividing the bush, hybrid varieties of geyhera are propagated.
Growing from seeds
Seeds have a shelf life of six months after harvest. If they are packed in foil, germination lasts up to 1.5 years.
Planting is carried out 25 weeks before the estimated time of flowering geyhera. The best time for this is March. A wide container 5 cm high is suitable for sowing. There must be drainage holes. The soil for growing seedlings must first be disinfected. To do this, the earth is calcined in an oven or microwave for at least 5 minutes.
For successful seed germination, the following conditions must be met:
- the soil for sowing must be loose; to achieve this, sand is added;
- seeds are poured onto moist soil from above. They do not need to be deepened, but they should be slightly pressed to the ground so that during irrigation they are not washed off with water;
- the seed container is left in a well-lit place and covered with glass or film, which is removed from time to time. Crops need ventilation, but make sure they are protected from drafts.
Seedlings will break through in 2-3 weeks. Shelter after this does not need to be removed, but continue to ventilate. The soil must be sufficiently moist. When the first 2-3 leaves appear, the seedlings dive at a distance of 5 cm from each other.
Seedlings need to be hardened off. When the danger of frost has passed, approximately in mid-May, they can be taken out into the garden and dug into the ground in a partial shade area. Young plantings in the first year especially need watering.
For this purpose, a bush is dug up and divided into several parts. Planting material must be prepared for rooting:
- dried shoots of the plant are cut;
- release brood buds from old leaves;
- the bare stem is shortened to a young tissue;
- sections with signs of decay are cut off on the roots, crushed coal is applied to the cut.
A landing pit is prepared with dimensions of 30x30 cm. Immediately before planting, mineral or compost fertilizers and ash are added to it. After planting, the geyhera is watered and shaded from the sun. After 6-7 weeks, the plant will start new roots. Then it can be transplanted to a permanent place.

Heuchera Care
Feeding and watering
Heuchera care consists of watering and fertilizing. Heuchera does not need abundant watering. Excess moisture adversely affects the plant. The soil should be well-drained and moderately moist. You should be attentive to the plant during cold dry periods and hot summer days, especially before flowering.
Watering mode - preferably morning or evening. Make sure that drops do not fall on the leaves; water is poured exclusively under the bush. In order to avoid rapid evaporation of moisture, the soil at the roots is annually mulched with rotted foliage or peat in autumn.
On fertile soils, the flower does not need special fertilizers. Twice a year - before and after flowering - a small dose of mineral fertilizer with a low nitrogen content can be applied to stimulate growth. Its excess will provoke the laying of the kidneys of renewal.
Preparing for winter
Geichera is a frost-resistant plant and remains to winter in the open field. However, despite the good tolerance of negative temperatures, the plant should still be prepared for winter. You don't need to trim the flower. The roots are spudded, and the soil is covered with insulating material. The base of the outlet is mulched with sawdust. Young plants are additionally covered with agrofiber.
Heuchera transplant
Growing geyhera is accompanied by one drawback - stretching the stems. This happens when the upper parts of the shoots rise above the soil with rosettes of leaves. The lower leaves die off, and the upper ones become smaller. Such plants need to be cut every two to three years and replanted.
Transplantation is carried out before flowering in spring or immediately after:
- flower stalks are removed, the exposed aerial parts of the stems are cut off;
- slices of cuttings are sprinkled with ash;
- the cuttings treated with stimulants for the formation of roots are planted in greenhouses or mini-cuttings.
Sand is suitable as a substrate. The position of the plant should be such that the center of the rosette is above the soil surface. With the development of young plants and the degree of their rooting, a decision is made to plant in open ground. It is better not to carry out autumn planting, but to postpone until spring.
Heuchera diseases
The culture is quite resistant to diseases and does not cause much trouble. The gardener himself can harm the flower if he does not take care of the drainage of stagnant water, or overfeeds the plant with organic matter. These factors most often cause root rot. The first signal of this will be the withering of the geyhera. In this case, the plant is dug up, rotten leaves, damaged parts of the roots are removed and planted in a pot.
Geichera leaves can damage snails and slugs. Uninvited guests are collected by hand, but lime grooves, tobacco dust or ash can also stop them. Leaves can be affected by spotting and downy mildew. Sick leaves are removed, they must be burned, and the plant should be treated with fungicides.
There is nothing difficult in planting and caring for a geyhera. As you can see, it is only important to choose a suitable site, not be too zealous with watering, and transplant the plant in time.
And if geykhera has already settled in your garden, it will be very interesting for us to know what varieties you are breeding, in which region? What are their features and methods of processing planting material? Share your experience in the comments!

An unpretentious perennial geyhera, planted by a caring florist, will take root without any problems in the place of the garden allotted for it. The recommendations listed below regarding the planting of this plant will certainly be of interest to many homeowners.
Landing time, choice of location
The optimal period for planting a flower is the first half of the spring season (March-April). The plant does well in a shady area. He should be given a place in a flower bed located in the eastern or western part of the garden. Heuchera is also allowed to be identified in the shade of a sprawling tree.
If the area near the house does not have sufficient shading, it is allowed to allocate a well-lit place for the plant (subject to regular, abundant watering). The gardener needs to keep in mind that varieties with pink or red foliage feel great in the sun and become even more attractive.
Soil quality requirements
As a rule, geyhera planting and care will be successful, provided that the requirements regarding soil quality are met. This culture likes fertile, light soil, characterized by neutral acidity. The recommended ph level for geyhera is as follows: 5 - 6 units. In order to increase the alkalinity of the soil, it is necessary to add chalk or wood ash in anticipation of planting a flower.
Arrangement of the drainage layer
A gardener who is interested in planting geyhera in the open field and care needs to know that for the good development of this crop, a layer of drainage in the soil should be provided. Flower growers with experience do not welcome the stagnation of moisture in the area of the root system, which provokes the occurrence of decay processes, and often even leads to the death of the plant. To prevent this, before planting the culture, you need to pour a small layer of broken brick, expanded clay into the dug holes.
Planting a geyhera plant
Summer residents resort to two methods of planting geyhera (seeds, seedlings), but both methods have their own nuances, pros and cons.
A gardener who studies information - planting geyhera from seeds and care should take into account that this method is considered less common, since it does not ensure the preservation of varietal, species characteristics of maternal specimens. The use of this method allows you to grow simple plants with green foliage. In the spring, seeds of the crop are sown in loose, prepared soil, followed by incorporation. It will take about 30-45 days for seedlings to germinate.
Seedling plant cultivation is considered more reliable. High-quality planting material can be purchased at the store, on the market, or grown independently. For seedlings, it is best to select a greenhouse container. After the young bushes grow up, they can be determined in an open flower bed with a depth of 3-4 cm in loose soil, with an interval of about 20 cm between specimens. Seedlings will be ready for planting in garden soil after 1.5 months from the moment of sowing.
Heuchera Care
For a gardener who is interested in garden geyhera: planting and caring for such a plant is unlikely to be difficult. Experienced gardeners note that this flower needs a minimum of attention. During the first year of vegetation, the crop does not need to be fertilized. Next, the annual top dressing of the plant is carried out before the start of flowering and after it ends.
Geichera requires regular watering. The need for irrigation is signaled by the drying of the soil. Moistening the soil once every 2 days is considered optimal. An excess of water is sometimes fatal to the flower. In a particularly dry period, the plant can be watered twice a day. Water flows gently under the bush. Splashes on the sheets are not welcome due to the possible occurrence of burn spots.
As necessary, weeds are removed, as well as loosening the soil. In order not to have problems with carrying out these procedures, it makes sense to mulch the soil around the bushes with a layer of peat.
To avoid freezing of the plant in winter, it is worth covering it with a layer of spruce branches, rotted foliage. With the onset of heat, there is no need to rush to remove the protective material - it is better to wait for the final thawing of the earth. After the establishment of warm weather, the geyher is unwrapped, the old foliage is removed from it. Under the roots, you can pour a small amount of a warm solution of mineral fertilizers.
How to propagate a plant?
In a plant at the age of 3-4 years, the rosette may begin to fall apart, this indicates the need to divide the bush in order to rejuvenate the flower.
This procedure is best done in May or early autumn. The division of the bush is carried out so that each specimen received has sockets in the amount of 2-3 pieces. Too long roots are shortened. Roots with signs of decay are well cleaned, powdered with charcoal powder.
The planting of the separated fragments of geyhera is carried out in dug holes 30 x 30 cm with an interval of 25 cm. Then the flower bed is watered and mulched. It will take about 30 days for the rooting of fragments of the bush.
The flower can be propagated by cuttings. This event takes place between June and July. Cuttings are cut from the parent plant (without parts of the rhizome). They are divided into specimens 4-6 cm long. Some of the leaves are removed from the cuttings, after which they are rooted in greenhouses in a peat-sand mixture. The formation of roots occurs within 3 - 4 weeks.
