When and how to dive zinnia. What should be done if zinnia sprouts are stretched out? Zinnia stretched out seedlings how to dive is it possible

Zinnia is an ornamental plant from the aster family, which is used for growing in a flower bed, as well as at home. During the flowering period, it produces beautiful inflorescences of various colors. Zinnia is successfully propagated by seedlings. You can sow the seeds immediately in open ground, but the young plants obtained in this way will bloom only closer to August. Therefore, many grow seedlings in greenhouse conditions, as this allows them to bring flowering closer.

One of the most common problems when getting seedlings is pulling them out. Thus, seedlings give a signal that certain mistakes were made in the process of caring for them.

Why do zinnia shoots stretch?

The reason that the ascended seedlings begin to stretch upwards, forming a long unstable stem, may be such factors:

  1. Too early sowing of seeds. Since seedlings grow very quickly, do not plant seeds before April. Strengthened seedlings can be transplanted to the bed no earlier than the threat of night frosts has passed.
  2. Lack of sunlight. For optimal seedling development, it is recommended to extend daylight hours to 12 hours with the help of.
  3. High room temperature. Air temperature above 25 degrees Celsius contributes to the active growth of shoots in height.
  4. dense landings. When sowing in a common dish, seedlings growing close to each other begin to fight for a place under the sun, stretching upwards.

How to save the stretched seedlings?

If adult bushes have already stretched out, they can be planted in a flower bed a little ahead of time. At the same time, a stem that is too long must be deepened into the ground - this is how new ovaries will form on it. In addition, a support should be installed near each plant and tied up. Keep the distance between the bushes at least 35 cm.

Transplanting into open ground is possible only if the weather is stable and there is no night drop in temperature.

If the seedlings have not yet fully formed, or the long-awaited warming has not come, you can slow down the growth of zinnia. To do this, pour into the container where the seedlings grow. Or lay the seedling on its side and sprinkle half of the elongated stem with earth.

Too long shoots of zinnia can be neatly folded into a loop.

To stop the growth of zinnia in height will allow pinching the tops - thus, the plant will redirect forces to the formation of side shoots. And in order for the stem to begin to grow in mass, seedlings should be brought into a cool room at night.

To stop growth, young bushes can be watered or sprayed with a solution based on special preparations, such as Athlete (1 ampoule per 1 liter of water).

Zinnia: growing seedlings and sowing seeds

And my zinnia stretched out and twisted like a snake - not seedlings this year, but scream !! ! I won't do anything to her! ! For some reason, we always devote so much time to what is not very good (even due to weather conditions). We deal with all sorts of suffocations. I decided it's not the year of zinnias! ! And I do what blogs!

To achieve excellent flowering or grow healthy seedlings, as in the photo, is possible only when everything is done correctly. However, in order for zinnia, including Graceful, to bloom profusely and develop well, it is necessary to provide it with regular, but moderate care, top dressing with mineral and organic fertilizers. Also, zinnia will require loosening the ground within each individual bush from the grower. This will allow her to breathe well. Dried zinnia flowers are removed to allow new ones to bloom. That's actually all that the owner of zinnia Graceful or any other kind of it will require from the owner.

In order for the plant to get used to environmental conditions and harden, it is necessary to accustom it to the street. To this end, at least 14 days before planting a flower, seedlings must be taken out to the balcony, but only in good weather. After 4-6 weeks, the seedlings are ready for a trip to the country.

So, growing from the seeds of this flower will require a large container, the depth of which reaches at least 10 cm. Based on the fact that the seedlings will not be small, the seeds must be placed at a distance of 2-3 cm from each other and to a depth not exceeding 1 cm. After completing the procedure, the soil must be moistened and the container covered with a film to create a greenhouse effect. This procedure is perfectly shown on many videos posted on the network.

In the latter case, they are sown directly in open ground in the second half of May, closer to the middle of the month, as, however, seedlings are planted, but first things first. A lot of gardeners plant this flower directly in the ground - with seeds. They can remain viable for two to three years after harvest. Sowing zinnia in the ground should also be carried out in the first half of June. In this case, flowering begins a little later. Tall varieties can be used to cover unsightly areas in the yard or garden. Undersized - as integumentary decoration. The only "but" with this method of planting is that you are unlikely to be able to collect the seeds. They just won't mature. But zinnia grown by seedlings may well be suitable for this purpose. The seeds of this plant are black, elongated. It is best to take them from the highest, middle wilted flower in the bush. Zinnia from seeds is also a real beauty, especially if it is planted in a sunny area.

Grow on a windowsill or in a greenhouse

In order to prevent freezing of young shoots of zinnia, before warm weather sets in, they must be covered with a special covering material. When sowing zinnia immediately in open ground, its flowering begins much later: at the end of July.

Grown plants need to be pinched over the third or fourth leaves to form a beautiful zinnia bush.

Caring for zinnia is not at all complicated. This is a very heat-loving plant, actively responding to bright light and free space around it. Therefore, when growing zinnia at home, you need to provide as much free space around the flower pot as possible. To obtain beautiful bright inflorescences of zinnia, nutritious soil is necessary. Watering zinnia loves moderate, without stagnant water. However, drying out also has a detrimental effect on the flowering of the plant: the flowers become smaller and the plant may even die.

I don’t dive, at the end of May I’ll plant it in the ground, the seedlings are already strong by this moment, the roots are good, it takes root easily.

Growing zinnia from seed seedlings in open ground and at home

First meeting

Yes, it’s like this every year, I don’t dive into the ground, I just deepen the cotyledons and nothing, it grows well. The flower is very unpretentious I always dive zinnia, deepening the cotyledon leaves.

Take into account that tall varieties are planted at a distance of 30-40 cm from each other, and undersized ones will require space within a radius of 20 cm from themselves.

As you can see, growing this plant from seed is not difficult. After the first green sprouts appear, you must immediately remove its lid from the container. Now the main thing is that watering is optimal. Note that the soil at the base of the small flower should be slightly damp, but by no means swampy.

Since zinnia, which is shown in the photo, loves heat and light, the best place for planting it will be an open and unshaded area, which is abundantly endowed with sunlight, which is clearly visible in numerous videos. This plant requires loose and fertilized soil from the grower. Quite often, this flower is grown in flower beds, where drainage is well organized. After all, zinnias cannot stand stagnant water.

Choosing a landing site

By choosing this plant for your flower bed, you will get just a great decoration. It takes almost no effort to grow zinnia, but at the same time it will delight you with bright colors all summer.

Growing for seedlings

In order for flowering to begin as early as mid-June, plants are planted in spring, at the end of April. It is best to plant 40-50 days before transfer to open ground. Sowing should not be started too early, otherwise the flowers will stretch out a lot. Previously, the seeds are kept in a humid environment for some time. Then they are planted in a box with earth, which is placed on the windowsill. Zinnia, the cultivation of seedlings of which requires only sufficient lighting, feels good in cramped conditions, so sowing can be carried out quite densely.

If you want to harvest zinnia seeds yourself, this is usually easy: wait until the seed pods are well matured and brownish in color, and remove the dry seeds from them. However, remember that the seeds you collect may not grow the plant you expect to see. Planted seedlings of zinnia should be regularly watered and fed with complex fertilizers. As a rule, it is not difficult to grow zinnia from seeds. Sowing of zinnia occurs in the spring, in late March or early April. Before this period, it is worth sowing seeds: the seedlings will outgrow and stretch out strongly, and those planted in the ground will take root and hurt for a long time. Zinnia seeds look quite large, therefore, they are sown in boxes or pots to a depth of about 1 cm. They germinate quickly, within about 5-6 days. After the seeds sprout, it is necessary to dive them: transplant the resulting zinnia seedlings into other pots. No more than three seedlings should grow in one pot. After picking and before planting seedlings in a permanent place, they are fed with fertilizers two or three times.

Zinnia proho tolerates a pick.

Dive and deepen the cotyledons!

And I stretched out, took a dive - it pours right in my hands, like crystal. Be careful with her.

After successful acclimatization, it is necessary to take care of their branching in the flower bed. To do this, pinch the top of the plant. Many flower growers perform this operation even on seedlings above the fifth level of leaves.

  • After the sprouts reach a height of about 10 cm, the seedlings must be dived into separate pots. Nothing bad will happen if you deepen each seedling to the level of its cotyledon. In this case, its green leg will be overgrown with adventitious roots that will go deep into the soil.
  • Seeds for seedlings are sown no earlier than mid-April. Experienced flower growers do not recommend starting the cultivation of this flower from seeds in March due to the rapid growth of seedlings in height. In the dominant number of cases, each plant already has time to acquire buds, which makes it very difficult to transport them to the planting site.

The plant shown in the photo belongs to annual flowers.

Seed germination time is about 6-7 days. As soon as the first leaves begin to form on the plants, a pick is carried out. Young annuals are regularly watered.

Zinnia (zinnia) is a beautiful flower that can withstand strong winds, drought and heavy rains. Therefore, many gardeners love it very much and often plant it in the flower beds of their plots. Zinnia, the cultivation of seedlings and adult plants of which is characterized by maximum simplicity, is a light-loving and very unpretentious flower.

Zinnia is known to many experienced flower growers and simple lovers of ornamental vegetation. This flower strikes with a rich variety of colors and sizes of bushes. In addition, such a flower culture needs only minimal care. And growing zinnia from seeds is such a simple process that many gardeners have fallen in love with it. For those who are not yet familiar with these flowers and do not know how to grow zinnia from seeds, we dedicate this article.

Description of the zinnia plant

Zinnia is famous for its benefits - long flowering (for one flower - this is about 35 days), as well as longevity in the cut. So, for example, you can use zinnia not only as a spectacular and long-flowering element of flower arrangements, but also as beautiful plants for a bouquet. In the cut, zinnia will be able to decorate the room from 1 to 2 weeks.

Zinnia is an annual grown from seeds. Thanks to their rapid growth, zinnias can give the garden more brightness from the beginning of summer until the arrival of autumn.

The seeds of this flower culture are quite large. Therefore, growing charming zinnia from seeds will turn into an exciting process, because working with it is very simple. From the date of planting the seedlings, only 2-2.5 months will pass when the buds bloom and the plants bloom. How you can achieve these results can be found in more detail below. We offer photos of flowers and a step-by-step description of the planting process and cultivation.

Varieties of zinnia

In nature, 22 species of zinnias are known, but two annual species are used in landscaping - elegant zinnia (Zinnia elegans) and narrow-leaved zinnia (Zinnia angustifolia), which gave rise to numerous varieties of garden zinnias and which are very diverse in terms of decorative possibilities. Zinnias are especially popular in the USA. Most modern varieties were bred there. Americans loved her for her resistance to heat and bright colors.

Planting dates for zinnia

When and how to plant majors in open ground depends on the propagation method: seed or seedling. If you follow certain rules and choose the optimal time for disembarkation, then the majors will please you with color in July.

When planting seedlings of zinnia in the ground:

  • transplanting seedlings to a permanent place can be started in May, and preferably in early June;
  • sowing seeds for seedlings can begin in late March - early April;
  • in open ground, seeds of majors are sown in mid-late May.

Growing seedlings of zinnia

The perennial zinnia, like the annual, reproduces generatively. In places with a warm climate, where there are no frosts in May, planting zinnia directly into the ground is possible, but if night frosts are a common occurrence in your area, know that zinnia seeds sown in the ground will die already at a temperature of -1 ºC. That is why experienced flower growers believe that it is better to grow and harden this plant as seedlings, and then planting zinnia in the ground with subsequent rooting will be successful. Before sowing, wrap the zinnia seeds in a cloth or gauze soaked in epin to identify which ones are viable and which are not. Fresh seeds hatch in a couple of days, and old seeds will take a week to sprout.

At the end of March or the beginning of April, germinating seeds of two or three pieces are spaciously sown to a depth of one centimeter in peat pots with a wet substrate, which will subsequently avoid picking, which this culture does not like. Sowing is moistened and placed in a bright place. The optimum temperature for zinnia germination is 22-24 ºC. If you do everything right, sprouts will appear in a few days.

Planting seedlings of zinnia in open ground

Young plants quickly form adventitious roots, and if the zinnia seedlings are stretched out, just add some soil to the pots. My zinnias didn’t stretch out very well, but a friend complained that she put the crops in partial shade, and the seedlings turned into painful translucent sprouts, so remember that zinnia seedlings require bright diffused light. With a sparse sowing of seeds, you do not have to dive seedlings, especially since zinnia does not tolerate picking. At the end of May, in order for the planting of zinnia to be successful, the seedlings begin to harden, taking it out for a while in the fresh air during the day. There is no specific scheme for planting majors in open ground. Depending on the size of the plant, 30–40 cm should be left between the shoots. The flower prefers well-lit areas without drafts. The soil must be well drained and nutritious. Before planting, the site should be cleared of weeds and dug up, adding fertilizer.

Zinnia Care

Drought resistance allows you to water the plants rarely even in the sun, but with prolonged drought they still lose their decorative effect (the inflorescences become faded and small, the leaves sag).

Watering can be rare, but always plentiful, while avoiding water on the inflorescences, as this will cause them to rot. Zinnias respond well to fertilizing with mineral fertilizers; with an excess of organic matter in the soil, they often suffer from powdery mildew. Faded baskets are cut to prolong flowering, it is especially important to do this after rain.

Diseases and pests of zinnia

Leaf spot of zinnia. At the same time, gray-brown round spots with a reddish border appear on the leaves. Leaves wither and fall. For prevention, avoid bushy plantings and over-watering. Cut off the affected leaves, if the plant is severely damaged, destroy it. It is also affected by true and downy mildew, snails and slugs.

How to deal with pests?

Using zinnia in flower bed design

Zinnia in a flower bed is often a desired flower. It is an annual plant that blooms beautifully and blends well with many other plants. A flower bed with zinnia in the center will look beautiful, undersized geraniums or lobelia are planted in the foreground, and tall cosmea or amaranth in the background. Zinnia refers to plants that do not follow the sun too clearly. Therefore, for flower beds, which are viewed from the north side, they are very well suited.

Collection of zinnia seeds

If you want to harvest zinnia seeds yourself, it's usually easy to do: wait until the seed pods are well matured and brownish in color, and remove the dry seeds from them. However, remember that the seeds you collect may not grow the same plant that you expect to see.

Progress does not stand still, and now we can enjoy hybrids of both species. Having unusual bright hats and more hardy to temperature conditions. The range of colors and petal shapes of hybrid zinnias is simply limitless!

Zinnia is an annual grown from seeds. Thanks to their rapid growth, zinnias can give the garden more brightness from the beginning of summer until the arrival of autumn.

From the date of planting the seedlings, only 2-2.5 months will pass when the buds bloom and the plants bloom. How you can achieve these results can be found in more detail below. We offer photos of flowers and a step-by-step description of the planting process and cultivation.

Magnificent zinnia is able to grow, reaching gigantic sizes (for example, like the California giant variety), and may be dwarf bushes, representatives of the Liliput form ( on the picture).

Choosing a place for plants

Zinnia is a warm and photophilous plant. Therefore, growing it on the site should be carried out in a place that is abundantly lit by the sun and not shaded at all. At the same time, it is better to exclude places where there are drafts so that wind currents cannot damage the stems of the bushes.

In terms of soil for growing zinnia in a personal plot, fertile and loose soil is suitable. An important quality that the soil should have is drainage. Since zinnia does not tolerate stagnant moisture in the soil, you can add sand when planting. Thus, it will turn out to “dilute” the soil and avoid stagnation of water after irrigation or rain.

You can grow zinnia on the site using seeds in one of the following ways:

  • sowing seeds at home for seedlings;
  • sowing seedlings immediately on a bed under the open sky.
  • Sowing for seedlings

    Zinnia seeds can be planted for seedlings when the second half of April comes. Planting seedlings earlier is not recommended due to the fact that zinnia is gaining growth very quickly, as mentioned earlier. This can significantly complicate the transportation of seedlings and transplanting them into open ground. Even early planting of seeds to obtain seedlings of zinnia is fraught with excessive elongation of seedlings, which, in turn, will affect the condition and development of flowers.

    For planting seedlings, you can use individual deep pots, which are filled with a light and loose substrate.

    Seedlings of this flower culture are quite large in size. Therefore, they must be buried in the soil to a depth of about 1 cm. At the same time, additional cover of the containers with a film to create a greenhouse effect is not required. You can see the first shoots in about 5-7 days. They will be as shown in the photo.

    If the seedlings were planted in a box, then the seedlings will need to be picked in separate vessels. Only 2-3 sprouts can be planted in one pot.

    Further care for the seedlings is not difficult. It will be enough for seedlings to carry out fertilizing with fertilizers a couple of times. Also, until the transplantation of zinnia sprouts to the garden, they must be hardened, periodically taking them out into fresh air, gradually increasing the intervals. The grown sprouts need to pinch the tops. So you can achieve the formation of a more beautiful bush.

    Zinnia does not belong to frost-resistant plants, and therefore, it is possible to plant seedlings grown at home from seeds only when the earth warms up enough. As a rule, seedlings can be transplanted to the garden at the end of May. Scheme for planting seedlings: 30-35 cm between plants and about the same - in the aisles.

    Sowing directly in the garden

    Growing zinnia in a personal plot from seeds can be done by sowing them immediately in open ground. Seedlings can be planted when the solid cold has passed.

    Wells for seeds are prepared with a depth of 5 cm. Several seedlings can be placed in one hole. With the right planting time, the first shoots will appear on the surface of the soil after a week. If necessary, it will be possible to thin out the sprouts, leaving about 30 cm between them in order to grow full-fledged flowers. Shoots are recommended to be covered with special material so that possible frosts do not damage the crops.

    Caring for seedlings growing in the garden is also not difficult. The main thing is to moderately water the soil and feed the plants using complex fertilizers.

    Often, flower growers use this particular option for planting zinnia seeds, since growing it in this way is much easier than with the seedling method.

    Even despite the fact that seedlings begin to bloom in the garden much later than the planted seedlings. So, for example, planting seedlings at the end of May, zinnia flowers will bloom in June, and seedlings planted in a flower bed in May will delight in flowering at the end of July.

    You can get acquainted with the process describing the cultivation of zinnia in the video.

    It is quite possible to collect the seeds of zinnia growing in the garden yourself. It is necessary to wait until the seed pods in the inflorescences are fully ripe. The change in their color to brown will tell you about this.

    Seed pods should be carefully cut off the stem using sharp scissors. Dry seeds need to be removed on a sheet of paper, which can later be used as an envelope for storing seeds until next spring.

      The seedlings will be rather big, so place the seeds at a distance of 2-3 cm from each other and at a depth of no more than 1 cm. Moisten well and cover with a film or glass. It's great that you have to wait only 3-4 days for seedlings.

      When green babies appear, immediately remove the film. Try not to over-water. The soil at the base of the plant should be barely moist, but not a swamp! When the sprouts become 10 cm high, each of them will need to dive into a separate pot.

      Do not be afraid to bury the seedlings to the level of the cotyledons. Very soon, the green leg of the sprouts will grow into the soil with adventitious roots. Another trick: in order for the root system to branch better, the main root should be pinched a little by 1-2 cm and immediately into the ground! Somewhere starting from May 20, 2 weeks before planting seedlings in the ground, you need to start “walking” it.

      In good weather, take it out to the balcony. So the plants will get stronger and harden. Approximately 4-6 weeks after sowing, seedlings can be taken to the country. If tall varieties are sown, 30-40 cm of free space should remain between the plants, undersized - 20 cm. As soon as the zinnias settle down a little in a new place, it's time to pinch the top of their head to make the bushes more branched.

      Some do it even at the seedling stage, above the fifth level of leaves. Well, that's it, it remains to wait for flowering!

      ^ Growing zinnia from seeds in a flower bed

      Sowing zinnia seeds directly into the flower garden is less of a hassle. There is not always extra space for seedlings on the windowsill, and it is time consuming. Moreover, the flower sprouts well in open ground.

      And strength is gained in the air faster than in a greenhouse! When the threat of spring frosts passes, approximately somewhere after May 15, you can begin to sow the plant. Make beds in the area designated for her. Perhaps you have some ideas for arranging a flower bed?

      For example, in a circle or in a checkerboard pattern? Pay attention to what varieties and species you plant. Depending on the species and varieties, zinnias are quite tall and very small. In any case, do not sow the seeds deeper than 1 cm. I like to sow directly in the flower bed.

      I sow 10 cm between seeds, and then at the stage of 4-5 leaves I thin out. I don’t throw away the removed plants, but plant them somewhere else in the flower bed. That’s all the subtleties of growing zinnia from seeds. As you can see, it's not that difficult!

      But what a queue of neighbors I collect at the dacha on the eve of September 1! Everyone wants a bouquet of zinnias for the teacher! And I don’t feel sorry for me, let the neighbors and school teachers rejoice with me! Photo by the authors: Les Serres Fortier, moonlightbulb, normanack, Theresa in MS.

      Elena Litvyakova: I never cease to be amazed at the diversity of nature: each flower is a miracle in its own way, and zinnia is one of them. The only drawback of this lovely flower for our places, where the frost-free period is only two months, is the thermophilicity of zinnia.

      A long time ago, when my passion for flowers was just beginning, in early spring, as soon as the ground thawed in greenhouses, I sowed seedlings of vegetables and flowers in them. From flowers I remember asters and zinnias. And after the first frosts, the asters seedlings also turned green, and the rows of zinnias died.

      It hurts to look at the dead sprouts that did not bloom and did not show all their beauty. Yes, and at the end of summer, in August, one or two nights of frost very often slip through in our Leningrad region, and zinnias turn black after such nights. Growing zinnia is not difficult.

      It is better to sow seedlings in early April, dive in a month into small pots, but plant them in the ground only after the end of spring frosts, otherwise all the work will be wasted. Zinnia does not even withstand 1C. This year the plans were huge, but not everyone managed to come true.

      I was also late with planting zinnias for seedlings. But, looking through the seeds, I came across bags of seeds bought this year. I thought: June is on the calendar, the germination of zinnias is usually good, they germinate 4-6 days after sowing, they bloom two months after sowing.

      Therefore, they will bloom for me in early August. Now we need to exclude the August frosts. In recent years, I have been growing many crops in containers: vases, basins and even buckets.

      Why not try and grow zinnias like this? I have a greenhouse where I grow seedlings of cucumbers and tomatoes, pumpkins and zucchini, watermelons and melons. After planting them in the ground, the greenhouse is freed, and I decorate it with petunias grown in pots, I plant melons and watermelons in large bags.

      I thought that it would be possible to plant zinnias in containers and place them first around the site, and then, if there is a threat of frost, bring them into the greenhouse. And some immediately take a place in the greenhouse.

      It is both hot and light there, just the conditions that these plants need. But do not forget that the clod of earth in the container dries up quickly. If you water without loosening, the water instantly flows down the walls of the container, and the earth remains dry. Before watering, you need to loosen the ground shallowly, and after watering, pour a little earth or peat with sand.

      Varieties of zinnia

      I prepared some very impressive envelopes for sowing. Here are some of them: Zinnia "Tangerine Mousse". Bright orange double, dahlia-shaped inflorescences 10–14 cm in size.

      Height up to 90 cm. Zinnia "Snow Queen" - the same dahlia-shaped flower shape, but only white. The height is also up to 90 cm. Zinnia "God of Fire" attracted me with its bright rich red color and the shape of the petals. "Fiery red flames" - such a characteristic is given to this flower.

      Long, narrow, rolled petals really resemble flames. Plant height - up to 75 cm. Cactus-shaped zinnia "God of the Sun" - a flower of amazing shape, orange in color and up to 15 cm in diameter. And for the first time I met narrow-leaved zinnia "Acapulco".

      The petals are maroon-brown and the tips are yellow. A plant up to 30 cm tall will look very impressive in a flowerpot.

      Choice of land and landing site

      Any garden land is suitable for zinnias, but it is better for them, and for any seedlings, to prepare the land in the country, on the site. This year I did not have enough land in the city to pick tomatoes, I had to buy more land in garden shops. To be honest, I was afraid that I would lose all the seedlings.

      When planting, add any complex fertilizer according to the specified norms. The place for zinnias should be sunny, without stagnant water. Zinnia will tolerate drought rather than excess moisture.

      Three weeks after planting, you can repeat top dressing with complex fertilizer. And during flowering, add ashes two or three times. I usually pour the ash into a nylon fabric and, shaking it, spray the ash in the root area, loosen it superficially and water it.

      Formation

      For the growth of side shoots after the formation of the fourth or fifth leaf, the plant must be pinched. The growth of the main stem stops, and shoots appear from the axil of each leaf.

      Can be formed in standard form; let the main stem grow, removing the lateral stems, and then let the top 4-5 shoots grow. Lovers of everything unusual can form one single flower, just as they form a flower in Indian chrysanthemums. It is necessary to remove all stepchildren and leave one bud.

      This flower will amaze you with its size. You can not form at all, the plant will still grow.

      We fight diseases

      Zinnia seedlings can be destroyed by a black leg. When growing in a container for subsequent picking, it is not necessary to sow thickly, pouring plenty of water. Before sowing, shed the earth with a light pink solution of potassium permanganate, and pre-soak the seeds in epine. When watering, I bring the tube to the ground itself, and the water does not fall on the seedlings. There is another way: we pre-soak the seeds until the sprout appears and plant them immediately in a pot, preferably 8 × 8 cm in size. Zinnia does not like picking, and grow in a separate pot more comfortable. On adult plants, it is necessary to remove wilted flowers, and in wet weather, spray a couple of times with fungicides or, I prefer, an infusion of garlic: crush 300 g of garlic, pour a bucket of water, leave for a day, strain and sprinkle. Zinnias are good in cutting and last 5– 6 days. If you wish, you can make a very impressive bouquet, no worse than from capricious gerberas. "Garden Affairs" No. 5 (49), 2011

      Refers to tall plants. Bush up to 90 cm high, with large leaves, with large hemispherical flowers.—- Inflorescence diameter up to 10-12 cm, with rows of shiny petals tightly adjoining each other, advancing on each other like rows of tiles.

      Can be with double or semi-double flowers. Examples of varieties of dahlia-colored zinnias: Dahlia-flowered - Violet This is a plant with a sprawling bush up to 75 cm high, with double inflorescences, very dense, 9-12 cm in diameter, beautiful purple in different shades, blooms for a very long time and abundantly until frost.

      Dahlia Flower - Crimson Monarch

      Spreading shrub up to 70 cm, flowers up to 10 cm in diameter, dark red, also blooms for a very long time.

      Dahlia - Dream

      This is a variety of annual high zinnia up to a meter high. The flowers are terry, pink, up to 15 cm in diameter, very thermophilic, does not tolerate frost.

      The plant is drought-resistant, but requires regular watering. The stem is strong, does not need a garter. Zinnias look very good in flower beds, borders, borders, in groups with other flowers. Low-growing varieties - pompoms - are planted on balconies, rocky hills.

      landing conditions

      Zinnia is a demanding flower for sunny, calm areas and moist soil. Reproduction occurs by seeds.

      But the main conditions for zinnia are warmth and a sufficient amount of light at the landing site. She can't stand frost at all.

      Flowers love the soil drained, with lime, saturated with mineral fertilizers. Zinnia flowers grow well in fertile soils, in well-lit areas of the garden, they are drought-resistant. To ensure abundant flowering, humus or compost is added to the soil along with mineral fertilizers (it is better to fertilize in the fall).

      You can grow zinnia by planting seeds for seedlings. Sow seeds in special boxes at the end of March. Approximately, on the sixth day shoots appear.

      In order not to damage the roots when picking, it is best to plant the seeds immediately in a separate pot. The grown seedlings should be pinched over the third or fourth pair of leaves in order to better bush the plants.

      It is better to harden seedlings - take them out to a cool balcony, if possible - outside for several hours

      Seedlings planted in a permanent place of residence require regular watering, fertilizing with fertilizers. It is also allowed to sow zinnia seeds immediately in open ground, but flowering will begin much later.

      Planting seeds in the ground

      You can plant seeds in the ground only after the spring frosts have passed. Lay in groups of several pieces no deeper than 5 cm. In a week, the first shoots will appear.

      When the sprouts grow up to ten centimeters, they can be thinned out so that the sprouts are at a distance of 20-30 cm from each other. In the southern regions, seeds are planted in the ground in May, several pieces per nest. But in other parts of the country, it is better to plant seedlings, so flowering will come faster.

      To protect the shoots from frost, they should be covered with a special covering material. Flowering usually begins at the end of July. And it continues until frost.

      Zinnia does not tolerate heavy watering, so watering should be moderate. When watering, it is not advisable to allow water to fall on the leaves of the plant, otherwise it may get burned. Do not allow the soil to dry out.

      This leads to the fact that the flowers begin to shrink, and the plant itself may die.

      Fertilizers, top dressing

      Regular top dressing is required three times per season: after planting shoots, during budding, and also after flowering. Zinnias do great when cut. They stand in a vase for a long time and delight all the inhabitants of the house with their presence for a long time.

      But for this you need to choose flowers that are only three-quarters open. A cut of a flower must be dipped in hot water, and not in cold water, as is customary, and only then placed in a vase with warm water.

      This procedure can be repeated several times, provided that the flowers begin to fade. After cutting, the flowers stand for more than a week, they keep a fresh look well.

      A bouquet of garden flowers such as zinnias, fragrant tobacco, lilies will bring joy and delight. Zinnia is perhaps one of the brightest flowers of the aster family. That is why many gardeners love her so much. This plant is a great decoration for any flower bed, especially since caring for it is quite simple.

      How to Grow Healthy Zinnia: Key Factors

      Zinnia is a representative of annuals. The height is up to 70 cm. The flowers are very persistent, blooming luxuriantly, growing well. They are similar in shape to dahlia buds. The stems are straight and strong. They grow quickly, but are afraid of morning dew and humidity. Moderate watering contributes to a better formation of the calyx of petals in zinnia. It is not difficult to grow a flower. The plant is photophilous, does not tolerate frost. In order for it to develop better, it is necessary to properly prepare the soil. Any land is suitable for zinnia. It is only advised to dig it up before planting and apply mineral fertilizers. After enrichment, the soil will become more fertile. At the end, add this mixture: 1 tbsp. superphosphate, potassium sulfate, nitrophoska and loosen the ground. The place for growing zinnia should be warmed up by the sun and not be too windy. Remember that the flower does not tolerate waterlogging, drought and poor drainage. Zinnia is propagated by seeds. They are sown in the soil in the May period, 3 seeds each, at a distance of 35 cm from each other. In order for the plant to bloom earlier, the flower is grown in seedlings. In early spring, the seeds are planted in small containers, 6 cm wide, 3 seeds each. At the beginning of summer, when frosts are not expected, they are transplanted to a permanent place by the transshipment method. Among the most destructive pests for zinnia are: spider mites (the fight against it is carried out by "Fitoverm" 2 ml per 1 liter of water), slug, aphid (1 table. " Sparks "per 10 liters of water), meadow bug, mining fly, scoop, common earwig. The most characteristic diseases: rot damage to the root system, the base of the stem. Against putrefaction, use the drug "Hom" for 10 liters 40 gr. If the flower is sick with powdery mildew, then the drug "Topaz" 1 ampoule (4 ml) per 10 liters of water.

      • Planting zinnia for seedlings: rules

        Cultivation of zinnia seedlings begins in late March - early April. Crops will sprout quickly, in 5 days. When the first true leaves appear, the seedlings need to dive.

        After planting in separate cups. In containers, zinnias can be pinched for better branching of the stem. Small seeds are planted in boxes. Large ones after diving are sown in glasses of 2 pcs. At the end of time, the weakest seed is determined and removed.

        In soil outdoors, seedlings are planted when frost is no longer expected. Even a slight decrease in temperature will destroy zinnia seedlings. You can sow seeds in open soil, but after heat has established. Plants will sprout and stretch, but will bloom later.

        Some flower growers use 2 methods: planting flowers through seedlings, and immediately into open ground. After planting, zinnia requires fertilizer - the first time after planting, when the buds have formed. After feeding every month. Humus is suitable for nutrition.

        Make sure that the amount of nitric acid in the fertilizer does not exceed the allowable limits. From a high nitrogen content, the zinnia stems will rot and die. When the seedlings take root in a new area, cut the upper stems, this contributes to a more lush flowering of the plant. Dried buds need to be cut off so that new ones open. Zinnias are different in type of inflorescences.

        plant description

        Zinnia is famous for its benefits - long flowering (for one flower - this is about 35 days), as well as longevity in the cut. So, for example, you can use zinnia not only as a spectacular and long-flowering element of flower arrangements, but also as beautiful plants for a bouquet.

        In the cut, zinnia will be able to decorate the room from 1 to 2 weeks. Zinnia refers to annuals grown from seeds. Due to the rapid growth, with the help of zinnias, you can give the garden more brightness from the beginning of summer until the arrival of autumn. The seeds of this flower crop are quite large.

        Therefore, growing charming zinnia from seeds will turn into an exciting process, because working with it is very simple. From the date of planting the seedlings, only 2-2.5 months will pass when the buds bloom and the plants bloom.

        How you can achieve these results can be found in more detail below. We offer a photo of flowers and a step-by-step description of the planting process and cultivation. Magnificent zinnia is able to grow, reaching gigantic sizes (for example, like the California giant variety), or it can be dwarf bushes, representatives of the Lilliput form ( on the picture).

        It is possible to grow such beauty by sowing seeds for seedlings at home. Another method is also practiced - planting zinnia seedlings immediately on the garden. But both the first and second options involve preliminary preparation of the site.

      • sowing seeds at home for seedlings; sowing seedlings immediately on a garden bed under the open sky.

Individual deep pots can be used for planting seedlings, which are filled with a light and loose substrate. Seedlings of this flower culture are quite large in size.

        Therefore, they must be buried in the soil to a depth of about 1 cm. At the same time, additional cover of the containers with a film to create a greenhouse effect is not required. You can see the first shoots in about 5-7 days.

        They will be the same as in the photo. If the seedlings were planted in a box, then the seedlings will need to be picked in separate vessels. Only 2-3 sprouts can be planted in one pot. Further, it is not difficult to take care of the seedlings.

        This way you can achieve the formation of a more beautiful bush.

It is possible to plant seedlings when the solid cold has passed. The holes for seeds are prepared with a depth of 5 cm. Several seedlings can be placed in one hole.

        With the right planting time, the first shoots will appear on the surface of the soil after a week. If necessary, it will be possible to thin out the sprouts, leaving about 30 cm between them in order to grow full-fledged flowers.

        It is recommended to cover the seedlings with special material so that possible frosts do not damage the crops. Care for seedlings growing in the garden is also not difficult. The main thing is to moderately water the soil and feed the plants using complex fertilizers. Often flower growers use this particular option for planting zinnia seeds, since growing it in this way is much easier than with the seedling method. Even despite the fact that seedlings begin to bloom in the garden much later than planted seedlings. So, for example, planting seedlings at the end of May, zinnia flowers will bloom in June, and seedlings planted in a flower bed in May will please flowering at the end of July. You can get acquainted with the process describing the cultivation of zinnia by video.

        How to collect planting material

        It is quite possible to collect the seeds of zinnia growing in the garden yourself. It is necessary to wait until the seed pods in the inflorescences are fully ripe.

        A change in their color to brown will tell you about this. Seed boxes should be carefully cut from the stem using sharp scissors. Dry seeds need to be removed on a sheet of paper, which can later be used as an envelope for storing seeds until next spring.

        Zinnia - planting and care, growing from seeds

        Zinnia (lat. Zinnia) belongs to the genus of herbaceous and shrubby perennials of the Asteraceae family native to southern Mexico, named after the pharmacologist and botanist Johann Gottfried Zinn from Göttingen, who, as director of the botanical garden, supplied Carl Linnaeus with herbarium material for research. The Aztecs have been cultivating zinnia since 1500, and in Europe it appeared in the 18th century, immediately becoming a favorite decoration of gardens and aristocratic receptions. By the twentieth century, zinnia was already cultivated on all continents, and from 1931 to 1957, the zinnia flower was even a symbol of the state of Indiana, USA. Today, about twenty species are known, many varieties and hybrids of this beautiful flower, which is distinguished by its beauty and undemanding to growing conditions.

        Zinnia flowers - description

        Depending on the type and variety, the height of zinnia can be from 20 to 100 cm and above. Zinnia leaves, entire, sessile, ovate, pointed to the top, pubescent with hard hairs, whorled or opposite. Inflorescences are apical single baskets with a diameter of three to fourteen centimeters, located on long peduncles. Reed flowers of zinnia, tiled in one or more rows, white, purple, orange, yellow, red - all possible colors except shades of blue; middle, tubular flowers - small, yellow or red-brown. The fruit is an achene with a tuft. Zinnia blooms from mid-June until frost, being resistant to heat and drought. The zinnia plant is cultivated as a bright and unpretentious garden plant, which is excellent for cutting. Perennial zinnia grows only in regions with warm winters. In our climate, zinnia in the garden is exclusively an annual plant, since it is not able to survive even short and slight frosts. Summer residents call this flower major. Annual zinnias and marigolds, daisies and marigolds are staples for the rustic landscaping that is increasingly in vogue in Europe. Zinnia is also appropriate in a flower bed with so-called noble flowers, it is also grown in a garden among vegetables, using its remarkable ability to stretch upwards, almost without creating a shadow.

      • Growing zinnia from seed

        Sowing zinnia.

        The perennial zinnia, like the annual, reproduces generatively. In places with a warm climate, where there are no frosts in May, it is possible to plant zinnia directly into the ground, but if night frosts are a common occurrence in your area, know that zinnia seeds sown in the ground will die already at a temperature of -1? C. The optimum temperature for zinnia germination is 22-24?C. If you do everything right, sprouts will appear in a few days.

        Zinnia seedling.

        Planting zinnia in open ground

        When to plant zinnias in the ground.

        When to plant zinnias in open ground, or rather, when can zinnia seedlings be planted? Planting zinnia in the ground is carried out in the second half of May, towards the end of the month, when the danger of return frosts has passed. The plant prefers light areas, protected from the wind, with neutral, well-drained nutrient soil. Before planting zinnia, the intended area is cleared of weeds by digging the soil to a depth of 45 centimeters and adding leafy humus, compost or rotted manure to it when digging at the rate of 8-10 kg per m ?, and it is best to do this in the fall.

        How to plant zinnias.

        Zinnia flowers are planted at a distance of 30-35 cm of one specimen from another by transshipment or together with a peat pot. You will see the flowering of zinnia in early July.

        Zinnia flower - care

        How to grow zinnia.

        If the planting of zinnia was successful, you can talk about caring for it, which consists in regularly loosening the soil, weeding weeds and infrequent but plentiful watering under the root so that water does not fall on the flowers. When zinnia begins to bloom, remove wilted flowers in time. Powerful stalks of zinnia do not need tying and props.

        Zinnia fertilizer.

        From the moment of emergence of seedlings and until the time when zinnia is planted in the ground, the seedlings are fed with mineral fertilizers with a low nitrogen content three times. A plant planted in the ground is fertilized with mineral fertilizers or liquid manure at least twice during the summer: the first time a month after planting, and the second - during the budding period. That's all the trouble. As you can see, planting and caring for zinnia is not burdensome at all.

        How to pinch zinnia.

        Readers often ask questions about pinching zinnia, and if so, how and when to do it. If you want the zinnia to bush, you need to pinch it over the third or fourth pair of leaves while still in seedlings, although you can do this when the zinnias in the open field have already taken root and take root. But if you want to grow elegant flowers for cutting on long peduncles, pinching zinnia is not needed.

        Zinnia pests.

        Of the pests of zinnia, aphids, May beetles, snails and slugs are most often bothered. Gastropods are usually lured to bowls of beer placed here and there around the site, or pieces of slate or roofing material scattered between plants, under which mollusks like to crawl. You will have to collect them manually. May bugs will also have to be collected by hand and dumped into a bucket of soapy water. Aphids are destroyed by spraying zinnias with a solution of tar soap at the rate of 10 g per liter of water, and in case of severe infection, with a solution of fufanon or actellik, prepared in accordance with the instructions.

        Diseases of zinnia.

        Of the diseases, it is possible to infect zinnia with gray rot, fusarium, bacterial spot, but most often with powdery mildew. If at least one leaf of zinnia is disfigured by gray-brown spots of a round shape left on the plant by bacterial spotting, take immediate action: tear off the leaves that have traces of the disease, and in case of severe infection, destroy the entire plant - there is no cure for this disease. Gray rot and fusarium are treated with fungicides (Topsin-M, Fundazol), as is powdery mildew, which manifests itself as a white coating on the ground parts of zinnia - Topaz, Skor, Topsin are more suitable to get rid of this misfortune from fungicides. It must be said that diseases occur primarily due to violations of the rules for growing a plant, for example, due to too dense planting or excessive watering, so first diagnose the problem of zinnia, eliminate it if possible, and then do the work on the mistakes - re-read plant care rules, find and analyze the discrepancy between them and how things really are. This is the only way to avoid trouble in the future.

        Zinnia after flowering

        How and when to collect zinnia seeds.

        Zinnia seeds mature about two months after they start flowering, so mark a few of the buds that open first. First-order shoots have the best seeds, so all side shoots should be removed from the specimens you have chosen for seed ripening. When the ripened baskets turn brown, they are cut, dried, the seeds are peeled, the dry remains of the flowers are cleaned and stored in a dry place with a constant temperature. Zinnia seeds remain viable for 3-4 years.

        Perennial zinnia in winter.

        As already mentioned more than once, zinnia is grown in the garden as an annual plant. But if your zinnia does not grow outdoors, but in a container or pot, then bring the flower indoors with the onset of autumn and take care of it like a houseplant, turning it from an annual zinnia into a perennial.

        Types and varieties of zinnia

        Of the more than twenty species of zinnia, only four are grown in culture: elegant zinnia, narrow-leaved zinnia, aka Hage zinnia, fine-flowered zinnia and linearis zinnia. The first two species served as the basis for fruitful breeding work, and, thanks to its results, today we cultivate in gardens not only the main types of zinnia, but also many excellent varieties and hybrids of this plant.

        Zinnia graceful (Zinnia elegans)

        - herbaceous annual up to 1 meter high and above with simple white, orange and pink inflorescences. The stem is straight, for the most part not branched, rounded in cross section, densely pubescent with hard hairs, all shoots end in apical inflorescences-baskets. The leaves are sessile, entire, ovate, with a pointed apex, 5-7 cm long and 3-4.5 cm wide, the leaf surface is pubescent, like the stem. Inflorescences with a diameter of 5 to 16 cm, simple, semi-double and double, consist of reed flowers up to 4 cm long and up to 1.5 cm wide, painted in various colors, except for shades of blue, and median, tubular flowers of yellow or reddish-brown color . Zinnia graceful blooms in June and can bloom until the very cold. In nature, it is most common in southern Mexico. In culture since 1796. Varieties and hybrids of elegant zinnia are classified according to several criteria: according to the structure of the inflorescences, according to their shape, according to the height of the stem and according to the timing of flowering.

        According to the timing of flowering, early-flowering, medium-flowering and late-flowering zinnias are distinguished.

        According to the structure of inflorescences, varieties are divided into simple, semi-double and terry.

        Depending on the height of the stem, it happens:

      • zinnia high(60-90 cm), grown for cutting, because it looks somewhat cumbersome in a flower bed;
      • zinnia medium(35-50 cm) - suitable for both cutting and decorating flower beds;
      • zinnia dwarf, or zinnia stunted(15-30 cm) - usually these are well-branched bushes grown both in flower beds and in balcony containers and simply in pots.
      • According to the shape of the inflorescences, zinnias are divided into seven categories. In our climate, the most commonly grown of them are:

      • Zinnia dahlia- powerful bushes, sprawling or compact, from 60 to 90 cm high with shoots of the first order. The leaves are large - up to 12 cm long, inflorescences hemispherical, double, up to 14 cm in diameter. Varieties: "Violet - terry zinnia 60-75 cm tall with dense inflorescences of different shades of purple," Orange koenig - on stems 60 to 70 cm high bright red-orange terry inflorescences up to 14 cm in diameter, Polar bear - a compact plant in height up to 65 cm with densely double white inflorescences with a greenish sheen;
      • zinnia midget, or zinnia pompon is a compact branched bushes no higher than 55 cm with a large number of shoots of the second, third and fourth order, small leaves and small, only up to 5 cm in diameter, inflorescences resembling a pompom on a cap. Varieties: “Little Red Riding Hood is a densely double variety up to 55 cm high with inflorescences of a truncated cone-shaped or rounded shape of a bright red hue; “Tom Thumb is a compact bush up to 45 cm in height with dense double red inflorescences in the form of a slightly flattened ball; “Tambelina is a variety mixture of different shades with a bush height of up to 45 cm and an inflorescence diameter of 4 to 6 cm;
      • zinnia fantasy- almost spherical compact bushes 50-65 cm high with large leaves and loose curly inflorescences, in which narrow reed flowers are folded into tubules and bent in different directions, and at the ends some of them are bifurcated. Varieties: “Fantasy - a bush up to 60 cm high with terry loose inflorescences up to 10 cm in diameter of different shades - purple, red, bright yellow, purple, red-orange, pink, white, salmon, etc .; “The gift is bright red zinnia.
      • In the culture of other countries are also popular:

      • California giant zinnia- varieties of terry zinnias with a diameter of up to 16 cm with tiled reed flowers and a stem height of up to 1 meter or more. They differ in relatively late flowering;
      • zinnia giant cactus- varieties with a height of 75 to 90 cm with double inflorescences up to 11 cm in diameter with reed flowers rolled into a tube, sometimes wavy with raised tips;
      • zinnia super cactus- varieties with the same inflorescences as those of giant cactus flowers, but not more than 60 cm high;
      • zinnia scabiose flower(it is also anemone-colored) - varieties with an inflorescence up to 8 cm in diameter, in which reed flowers are arranged in one row around the middle, consisting of tubular flowers overgrown with corollas, from which the middle looks like a hemisphere, painted to match the reed flowers.
      • Zinnia Haage (Zinnia haageana), or narrow-leaved zinnia (Zinnia angustifolia)

        also from Mexico. This is an annual upright plant that forms branched bushes. Leaves sessile, lanceolate or elongated, pointed. Inflorescences are small, simple or double, bright orange. Varieties: “Glorienshine is a highly branched shrub up to 25 cm tall with double inflorescences, in which reed flowers are dark orange at the base and red-brown at the ends; Persian Carpet Mixed series with semi-double bicolor buds of red with lemon, white, orange and yellow - a large array of this zinnia really looks like an oriental carpet. The English variety mixtures Starbright and Classic have also become famous - plants with inflorescences of white, yellow and orange tones up to 30 cm in height with a thin and weak, but strongly branching creeping stem. These zinnias are mostly used as ground cover plants. Zinnias of the Sombrero variety look pretty on the flowerbed - inflorescences of a red-brown hue with an orange border.

        Thin-flowered zinnia (Zinnia tenuiflora)

        it is usually used to create landscape flower beds and is a bush about 60 cm high with cranked thin stems of a reddish hue. Inflorescences are small, up to 3 cm in diameter, reed flowers are narrow, bent, with twisted tips, purple hue. Varieties: "Red Spider.

        Zinnia linearis (Zinnia linearis)

        - sometimes it is confused with narrow-leaved zinnia, because it has thin and sharp leaves, like the ends of manicure scissors. This is the smallest of the cultivated species - branching, almost spherical bushes grow no higher than 35 cm. Linearis inflorescences are small, reed flowers of yellow color with an orange edge. Zinnia linearis is suitable for growing in pots, in balcony containers, on alpine slides and in small flower beds. Varieties: “Golden ai - a white middle of tubular flowers, reed flowers of white color - the variety looks like an ordinary chamomile; “Caramel - the color of the reed flowers is caramel yellow, the middle is black; “Yellow Star is a variety with yellow inflorescences.

        From the crossing of zinnia Haage and zinnia graceful, many hybrids were bred, in particular, the Profusion series, which is very popular among flower growers, is low bushes up to 35 cm, strewn with small multi-colored daisies. The Magellan series is also gaining popularity - bushes up to 35 cm tall with densely double dahlia-shaped inflorescences up to 10 cm in diameter of coral, cream, orange, pink, red, cherry, salmon and yellow colors. Recently, the Swizzle series has appeared in the gardens, which so far consists of two varieties - Cherry Ivory with cherry baskets with cream-tipped reed flowers and Scarlett Yellow with red inflorescences and bright yellow tips.

    The variety of annual flowering crops is very large, but among them there are clear favorites that enjoy the well-deserved love of flower growers. Unpretentious zinnias have a number of advantages. Growing zinnia from seeds can be done in two ways: by seedlings and by sowing in the ground (this is usually practiced in those regions of the country where warm weather is observed already in mid-April). You can learn about how and when to plant zinnias in 2019 for seedlings and in a greenhouse from the proposed material.

    Here is the agricultural technique of caring for the crop and the basic rules for planting. When growing zinnia from seeds, it is important to choose the right varietal groups depending on the purpose of the planting material. Making borders, decorating fences and flower beds, cutting for bouquets - this plant is quite suitable for all this. The period of budding and subsequent flowering depends on when to plant zinnias for seedlings. You can also regulate this process by forming a bush. The earlier the pinching of the central stem is carried out, the more abundant the flowering will be. However, to obtain the largest possible buds, a small amount of them should be left on one bush.

    Look at the photo of healthy and strong seedlings of zinnia seedlings and continue to delve into this interesting topic:

    Healthy and strong zinnia seedlings grown from seedlings at home

    Choosing varietal groups

    As a rule, we plant zinnia in open ground with seeds only if its flowering period should be in late July or early August. This may be required when compiling combined flower beds, where other crops bloom in the first half of summer. In all other cases, this is not justified, since 2-3 months may pass from the moment of sowing to the appearance of signs of the first bud. And if we take into account that the culture dies even with a short-term decrease in air temperature below +5 degrees Celsius, it becomes clear that when we plant undersized zinnia when grown from seeds in mid-May, and frosts are already likely at the end of August, then wait for a full-fledged flowering will fail.

    To begin the exciting process of growing zinnia from seed, there is little to know about when to plant seedlings. The first thing we do is select the varietal groups suitable for our tasks. And in order to make the right choice, let's get acquainted with the most basic of them.

    A variety of varieties of zinnia are suitable for growing seedlings

    Pompons and chrysanthemums

    Chrysanthemum and pompon varieties bloom beautifully. They have large inflorescences of the most diverse shapes and colors. Raspberry and white, pink and yellow tones are popular. All of them belong to the so-called midget class. This means that their stem height can reach a maximum of 60 cm in height. But on the other hand, the bush branches beautifully and creates excellent landscaping of the site. Can be grown as room or container culture.

    Chrysanthemum dwarf varieties have their own advantages. In particular, they do not require pinching and shaping the bush. Rich branching gives the impression of the splendor of the plant. each stalk ends in a small flower in diameter. Usually the bud in a blossoming state reaches 5-7 cm in diameter.

    Most often, we plant these zinnias with seeds for seedlings in early March and, after germination, dive into separate peat pots. "Tom-Tumb" is an unpretentious variety, but "Rotkopchen" with dahlia-colored buds needs an increased amount of mineral supplements.

    Pompom varieties of zinnias have high decorative properties

    Dahlia varieties

    Many growers ask about when to plant zinnia seeds outdoors and still get guaranteed flowering. So, indeed, there is a group of varieties with a minimum period of vegetative development from sowing to the beginning of flowering. Dahlia varieties have a high rate of growth and development. Flowering can be observed as early as 45 days after germination. This is a group with a high stem, reaching 100 cm. The buds are similar to dahlias, their diameter is 12 - 15 cm.

    Among them there are scabiose and cactus subspecies with unique color tones. Lilac, salmon, purple and orange buds can be obtained by planting varieties "Violet", "Large-flowered" and "Lilliput".

    Dahlia-shaped zinnias look very attractive even in the photo - grow them with seedlings and enjoy a beautiful flower garden on your site.

    California varieties

    California varieties have pronounced decorative properties. These are the largest buds, in the opened state, the diameter of some can reach a record 25 cm. Tall stems allow you to use flowers for bouquet cutting. And this is justified by the fact that the "California Mix" is able to stand in the cut for more than 3 weeks without losing its decorative qualities.

    Growing zinnia seedlings: sowing and photo of flowers

    The cultivation of zinnia seedlings does not begin with sowing, as it may seem to inexperienced flower growers. The beginning of this process is rooted in autumn days. It was then that it was necessary to prepare all the components of the future nutrient mixture. The final result depends on its quality. Of course, if you can now buy almost any soil in a specialized store. But often their quality leaves much to be desired. It is much more interesting to create the soil yourself.

    Seedlings of zinnia flowers develop well in a soil mixture composed of two parts of humus (manure or compost), 1 part of soddy soil with an admixture of deciduous structure and 1 part of sifted river sand (you can’t take construction). All this must be mixed, spilled with a boiling solution of potassium permanganate, cooled. Then add 1 matchbox of mineral fertilizer mixture for flowering plants per 5 liters. mix. You can start filling boxes.

    Usually sowing zinnia for seedlings is carried out in wooden or plastic boxes. There is only one requirement for containers - they must have a sidewall height of at least 25 cm. Initially, filling with soil is carried out by 1/3 (7 cm). After sowing, another 1 cm of soil is poured over the compacted surface of the seeds. And then the backfilling of the earth will continue for the entire period of growing seedlings.

    Planting zinnia for seedlings: when to sow in 2019?

    Strong and healthy seedlings of zinnia are obtained only with the right choice of date for sowing. With this culture is clearly not worth the haste. With early sowing and the growth of the first shoots in the conditions of a short daylight hours, the seedlings are strongly elongated and do not give the splendor of flowering, which is inherent in their genetic potential.

    Timely planting of zinnia for seedlings in 2019 can be carried out both in mid-February (for the southern regions of the country) and in mid-March (for the Urals and Siberia). We suggest you find out the approximate timing of when to sow zinnia for seedlings in accordance with the lunar calendar:

    • in February, the numbers from the 19th to the 23rd and the 27th to the 28th are suitable for sowing;
    • in March, sowing zinnia can be produced on the 12th, 13th and 14th, 21st, 22nd, 23rd, 24th and 25th;
    • April will allow belated growers to sow zinnia for seedlings from the 7th to the 10th, and for those who are completely late, the opportunity remains to do this from the 17th to the 21st.

    In open ground, sowing zinnia in 2019 is best done either at the end of April (as soon as the soil thaws) or in early May. Later sowing no longer makes sense, since the plants will not even have time to pick up buds.

    How to grow good zinnia seedlings at home?

    Experienced flower growers know how to grow good zinnia seedlings at home. And we conducted a survey among them, collecting all the most important subtleties and secrets. And there were a lot of them. They concern not only when to plant zinnia seedlings in Siberia, the Urals and the Far East. First of all, it is about choosing the right growing method. And there are several of them:

    • traditional sowing in tall wooden boxes, followed by topping up the soil as the seedlings grow and stretch;
    • sowing in boxes with subsequent picking into separate containers;
    • sowing in peat tablets with a transplant in the phase of two true leaves in separate pots;
    • landing in "snails" or rolls made from a substrate for laminate flooring.

    In the climatic zone of the Urals, Siberia and the Far East, sowing is carried out in early March. But in the Moscow region and the Chernozem zone, landing should be carried out a little earlier, in mid-February.

    Please note that at the time of transplanting into open ground to a permanent place of growth, zinnia seedlings should be 6 to 8 weeks old. This means that if the landing is planned in the garden in early May, then we sow at the end of February. But if the climate does not allow planting before the beginning of June, then it is recommended to plant seedlings no earlier than mid-March.

    If the seedlings stretched out at home?

    In the event that the seedlings are stretched out at home, then experienced flower growers recommend ruthlessly shortening it by pinching all the stems. To do this, you can take nail scissors and disinfect them in alcohol for 30 minutes. Also prepare finely crushed charcoal to dust the pinching points. We take an elongated seedling and pluck it with nail scissors. do not be afraid to do this, new shoots will begin to grow from the sinuses of the leaves. Then, a week after pinching, a transshipment procedure is carried out with deepening of the stem. It is important to shorten the central root of the plant during transshipment. This agrotechnical operation will allow you to quickly build up the lateral branches of the root lobes.

    Seed preparation and sowing

    Preparation of zinnia seeds by stratification or scarification is not required. The seed material is very large and perfectly divided. Therefore, thickened crops are not observed. Before sowing, soak in a solution of hydrogen peroxide 3% or "Epine". This will make it possible to get shoots faster and stronger seedlings.

    Preparing zinnia seeds for planting seedlings includes soaking

    Sowing is carried out on a well-moistened soil surface. Spread the seeds at a distance of 2 cm from each other. Then pour 1 cm of soil on top. Re-watering is not necessary. Wrap the container in a plastic bag and place it in a place where the temperature is kept high around the clock (a battery or the top of kitchen cabinets).

    Shoots will appear after 5-7 days. Immediately it is necessary to transfer the containers to a lighted place. But avoid exposure to drafts. Therefore, if the window opens periodically, then containers with zinnia seedlings should not be placed on its windowsill.

    Picking, shaping and pinching

    Proper sowing of seeds can save you from all the further hassle associated with picking. However, it should be understood that a properly carried out transplant ensures the development of a large root system. so, in the process of picking, it is recommended to pinch the central root. As a result of this, the root system begins to develop in a horizontal plane, and the area of seedling nutrition increases.

    The subsequent formation of the bush is that when the sixth leaf appears on the central stem, you need to pinch it. The crown is removed and the cut is smeared with garden pitch or powdered with crushed charcoal. correct pinching is not a one-time agricultural event. It should be repeated at the moment when the side shoots reach a height of 5 cm. Pinch the tops again and leave to branch further.

    Fertilizing, watering and spraying

    Feeding seedlings of zinnia should begin a week after transplantation. It is also recommended to put a small piece of banana skin on the bottom of each pot. It is an excellent natural source of potassium. This trace element provides abundant and lush flowering. So, after transplantation, the first top dressing is organic. To do this, use "Agri-Cola" for flowering plants. Then, after a week, you can use a complex of mineral fertilizers with a predominant percentage of potassium and magnesium.

    Spraying bushes should be carried out daily in the morning. To do this, use the Epin solution - it stimulates the formation of lateral branches. Also, once every two weeks, water each plant with a solution of succinic acid. This drug can be bought at any pharmacy. dissolve 5 tablets of succinic acid per 1 liter of water, stir and spill the seedlings.

    Conditions for growing zinnia flowers in open ground

    Growing zinnia in open ground is preferably carried out in seedlings. To do this, sowing seeds is carried out at home in late February or early March. Then, at the end of May, a place of constant growth is being prepared. Organic and mineral fertilizers are applied. The soil is being dug up.

    Planting seedlings of zinnia in open ground is carried out after preliminary hardening. For this process, it is necessary to take containers with seedlings into the open air for a certain time every day. First it's 30 minutes, the next day it's 60 minutes.

    Basic conditions for growing zinnia:

    • a well-lit area open to sunlight;
    • well-structured loose soil;
    • regular watering and soil moisture;
    • mulching of the topsoil is mandatory;
    • remove all weeds;
    • fertilize regularly in the form of foliar and root dressings.

    Growing zinnia flowers outdoors is not difficult. This plant is perfectly adapted to environmental conditions in all regions of our country. In dry times, watering should be carried out. Damp weather can promote the development of bacterial stem and root rots.

    Sowing in open ground

    Proper sowing in open ground may be required in cases where the grower does not have free space on the windowsill, but you want to get these beautiful flowers at your disposal. Choose elevated ground for planting. Immediately after the snow cover has melted, pour them with boiling water and dig a shovel onto the bayonet. It’s great if warm beds are prepared in the fall. If not, then build it immediately. It is done like this:

    • going to a wooden box;
    • the fertile soil layer is preliminarily removed;
    • dry branches, brushwood and half-rotten boards in a chopped state are piled at the bottom;
    • then a green mass of grass is applied;
    • the next layer is compost;
    • on top again a layer of green grass;
    • fill everything with fertile soil;
    • pour boiling water with potassium permanganate.

    Sowing zinnia in such a bed in the open field will accelerate the growth and development of the plant due to the large amount of carbon dioxide released by the internal contents.

    Seeds are planted in grooves at a distance of 3-5 cm between them. The depth of the grooves is up to 1 cm. After sowing and covering with soil, spill the seeds with warm water. Cover with plastic wrap on top and install a mini-greenhouse. Shoots will appear after 5 days.

    The flowering of such plants will begin 2 weeks later than those grown in seedlings. The undoubted advantage of sowing zinnia in open ground is that the seedlings are stronger and more hardened.

    How to get your seeds from flowering plants?

    Before you get zinnia seeds from your flowering plants, you need to choose the ones you like the most. This planting material retains its germination capacity for 3-4 years. It is easy to collect seeds from any varietal groups. They ripen even in the harsh climatic conditions of the Urals, Siberia and the Far East.

    Prepare the plant for seed collection should be in advance. On it you need to leave only those buds that will ripen to collect planting material. All other buds should be cut before they open. After the mature seed pod is removed, budding will continue. On average, it takes 55 days for the seed pod to mature from the moment the bud opens. After harvesting, the seed pods should be placed in a warm place for another 30 days.

    Then all the boxes are opened and the seeds are removed from them. They are sorted. for landing should be taken those that have the correct trihedral shape. They are located around the core of the seed box. the rest may have insufficient germination or lose their parental decorative properties.

    Don't forget to label the seed bags. write not only the name of the variety and color, but also the year of collection. This will help in the timely rejection of obsolete planting material.

    Pest and disease control

    A constant fight against diseases and potential pests of zinnia in the garden is required only in humid summer conditions. Powdery mildew and gray mold often develop. It can be controlled with fungicides. Characteristic signs: gray spots on stems and foliage, withering of inflorescences. For the fight, spraying with solutions "Fundazol", "Vectra", "Cooloid sulfur" or "Topaz" is recommended.

    Plant pests are often damaged by aphids. You can fight them with the help of the drug "Aktara" or "Fitoverm". Spraying should be carried out regularly, 1 time in 3 days. And to combat snails and numerous slugs, metaldehyde granules should be laid out. It is produced in the form of preparations "Thunderstorm".
