The better to paint a metal staircase. Hammer paint on metal stairs

To give a beautiful appearance Do-it-yourself staircase painting required, also allowing you to save a lot of money that would have to be paid to specialists performing painting work. In order to qualitatively paint the stairs, you need to choose the right paint, the right tool and follow certain rules.

Features of painting stairs

  • brushes or spray;
  • paints and varnishes;
  • container for paint;
  • priming.

The first stage of painting is to apply primer to the surface of the stairs. Priming is necessary in order to remove minor surface defects or make them less noticeable, as well as to ensure good adhesion of paint to the surface of materials. Without a primer, you will need to apply more coats of base paint, which can significantly increase the cost of the job.

The painting procedure may vary depending on what material the staircase is made of, and depending on the material, primer, paint and varnish are also selected.

Painting a wooden staircase

Wooden stairs can be painted or varnished. If the staircase is made of high-quality noble wood, then it is best to varnish it, leaving the natural beauty of the material and protecting it from external influences. If the wood used is not of the highest quality and has various defects, then it would be better to choose a paint that can hide many unattractive places.

If the decision is made to varnish, then it is necessary to choose the right varnish. The most practical will be a matte or semi-gloss varnish, which can be used to varnish steps, railings and other elements. Glossy varnishes on elements with a high degree wear quickly lose their properties and especially shine.

If desired, you can change the color of the tree without hiding its texture. To do this, you can cover the material with stains, thanks to which you can darken the tree and give it the desired color. After applying and drying the stain, the material is varnished with a colorless varnish. For the full painting of wood, paints on drying oil are used. The best option for decoration and protection are enamels that combine the properties of paint and varnish.

Having decided on the materials, you can begin the process of applying paints and varnishes. In the case of a wooden staircase, this is best done with a brush. On hand, you need to have several brushes of various sizes for the convenience of painting hard-to-reach places, you will need a thin brush.

The tree is painted in several layers, the number of which depends on the tree. This is due to the fact that wood absorbs paint in varying degrees. Subsequent layers are applied after the first one dries and absorbs a little.

Painting a metal staircase

If you are painting a metal staircase with your own hands, then you need to buy a primer for metal and carefully prepare the surface by cleaning it from rust and other contaminants.

Primer and paint are best applied with a spray gun, so that the surface will be smoother and more even. If there is no opportunity to use this tool, then you can get by with a regular brush.

For thicker paint, a round-bristled brush is best, while for thinner paint, a flat, soft brush is best.

Important! For comfortable painting, it is best to buy high-quality brushes various types and dimensions, which will ensure the convenience of work and a higher speed of painting.

Where to start painting

When painting stairs with your own hands, the video will help you complete complex painting without outside help, high quality and fast

You can start painting from the top step gradually descending into them. At the very beginning, you can paint the railing, and then move on to the steps. This is more convenient, because if you paint the steps, then when working with the railing, you will not be able to walk up the stairs.

Important! The quality of painting largely depends on how well the surface is prepared and the instructions for using paints and varnishes are followed.

When painting the stairs with your own hands, photographic work will allow you to quickly orient yourself and do the work more efficiently and quickly.

After completing the painting work, you must wait until the paint or varnish is completely dry. It is recommended to wait a little longer than recommended by the manufacturer of the used paints and varnishes. This will ensure maximum coating strength and durability.

This article will be helpful those who want to calculate the stairs from the 1st to the 2nd floor townhouse and cottage. It doesn't matter if you will manufacture and install the stairs yourself or order from the company, but it is very important that you can be sure that this is the most ideal and comfortable staircase.

At the end of the article you will find out how many steps you need, what sizes the steps will have, what the Height of each step will be, you will have an interfloor platform or winder steps. This calculation will be terms of reference On the stairs.

By the way, I will answer the question: "Who am I to teach you how to calculate stairs?"

I am the person who installed 410 stairs in 2017. Of course, I do not do everything with my own hands and I have my own team. But, I think that the fact of manufacturing and installing 410 stairs is enough for you to be able to read this article to the end.

Why did I decide to make this article? When I first started working on metal frame stairs, I searched the entire Internet in search of useful content on the calculation of stairs, but there is too little of it. And the one that is useful has a significant disadvantage in that it is difficult for an ordinary person and understandable only for a builder. I did not have a construction education, so I had to learn from my mistakes. Two years later, when I started writing this article, I again rummaged through the entire Internet, well, maybe not all the Russian-language content in search engines, but definitely all the content on YouTube on this topic. After making sure that there is no really useful video and article, so useful that the average person can use it, I decided to create it.

Let's get down to business!

All stairs (concrete, wooden, on a metal frame) are calculated in the same way.

Of course, there are a lot of technical nuances in each type of stairs, but they do not affect the calculation of the stairs.
In order for us to speak the same language and about the same thing, look at the photos of those stairs that can be calculated after reading this article.

And now, to reinforce your understanding that this the calculation is suitable for your home or cottage, see photos of houses where you can install such stairs.

I’ll run ahead and say that not everyone, after reading the article, will be able to spend ladder frame calculation. If you already suspect that I am talking about you now, then do not worry, I will have for you good news: if you can calculate the stairs for yourself, but you still have doubts about the correctness of the calculation, I will be happy to check your calculation and make corrections. At the end of the article I will tell you more about this.

So, let's go directly to the calculation!

We will do the calculation on the U-shaped staircase, if you have an L-shaped one, then do not hang your nose. The actions are the same.

✔ Height✔ Length✔ Width

To make it easier to understand the calculation of the stairs, we will take 1 specific object where there will be a standard U-shaped staircase.

Look at the photo and video from the object where we installed such a ladder:

✔ Calculation of the height of the ladder frame

We need height from the floor of the first floor to the floor of the second floor.

Please note that the size is not from the floor of the first floor to the ceiling, but from the floor to the floor. It is very important that this size be from the finished floor of the 1st floor and the finished floor of the 2nd floor, if you are under construction and the screed has not yet been poured or there is a screed, but there is no flooring yet, then estimate approximately how many millimeters your floor will rise.

It is very important that the size is from the finished floor of the 1st floor and the finished floor of the 2nd floor!

✔ The optimal length of the metal staircase to the second floor

We need length from the wall, where the stairs will turn, to the edge of the end of the ceiling. Recheck by measuring this size on both sides. If the dimensions do not converge on both sides, take the minimum.

Use for calculation the minimum size from the wall, where the staircase will turn, to the edge of the end of the ceiling.

✔ Calculation of the width of the metal frame of the stairs

We need dimension from left wall to right wall.

Measure this dimension near the end of the floor and near the wall that runs parallel to the floor. If the sizes do not converge, take the minimum size from them.

Mines may be different, but the principle of calculation is the same in all cases

* the photo shows an L-shaped mine

We got 3 sizes

Record your dimensions in this format

A little later, I will write why it is necessary to fix these dimensions in this format.
Before diving into the details calculation of a metal staircase to the second floor, I will briefly tell you about what we will do:

Four basic steps in the calculation of the frame of the stairs

  1. We calculate the approximate number of steps. Simple arithmetic.
  2. We customize the interfloor platform

☆ If the site is not suitable, then we calculate the running steps

and adjust the number of steps on the flights of stairs

    We make a more accurate calculation of the number of steps, but not the final one

    We make the final calculation of the stairs.

Repeat steps 2, 3, 4 if you need to compare several options.

Difficult?

Now I will explain calculation metal frame stairs on a figurative example:

Imagine driving a car from Moscow to St. Petersburg.

We do not need to know in advance all the way from point A to point B, we know that we need to go along the Leningradskoye highway and this is enough to start moving. And then, already in the process of movement, we correct the path.

It is the same with the stairs, we do not know what the final staircase will turn out to be, but we we move from the simplest calculation of the stairs to the complex one.

➤First step

We need to understand the approximate number of steps on your stairs.

To do this, we need to divide your height by standard heights steps

In our case, the height was 2800 mm.

Here is my calculation

Formula: Height / riser = number of steps

We need to repeat this action 5 times.
Let's do it!
2800/150=18,6
2800/160=17,5
2800/170=16,4
2800/180=15,5
2800/190=14,7
Before drawing conclusions, I will comment so that you do not get confused:

We take the height from the floor of the 1st floor to the floor of the 2nd floor

2800 divided by 5 standard sizes riser.

The result of the calculation will be the approximate number of steps.

So that you don’t drown in doubts now that the standard riser is 150 mm, and I am considering the option of an a priori uncomfortable staircase, I will immediately say that everything is correct. The thing is that according to the standard, the step (tread) is 300 mm, and the height of the riser is 150 mm, but in reality this is possible in very rare cases. This is due to the fact that for such dimensions you need 1.5 times more space for stairs than is usually laid in low-rise construction. In other words, in order to make such a comfortable staircase, you must have an opening for the stairs as in the entrance.

When the client builds a private house, most often he doesn’t think about the stairs at all, and when I come to his object, he clutches his head in surprise at what an uncomfortable staircase he will have and what is needed to make at least a little more convenient option.

Or let's take another example, townhouses in cottage settlements, where at the design stage openings for the stairs are already laid, but at the same time, 300 mm treads and 150 mm risers are never obtained. Most often, the step part is 250 mm and the risers are 170-180 mm. And, by the way, these are quite comfortable stairs. But! If developers make townhouses in such a way that they include standard stairs,

then for you, as for customers, the price of the house will be 10-15% more expensive from the developer.

Don't get hung up on 300mm and 150mm based on advice from the internet. Read the article to the end and you will be able to make a comfortable ladder!

Summing up ladder frame calculation :

We take the results of the calculations from minimum size up to maximum.
from 14.7 to 18.6 - this is the approximate number of steps that we need to fit into the opening of the stairs so that it is within the specified parameters for convenient ascent and, even more so, descent from the stairs.
But! we cannot make 14 whole and seven tenths of a step, or 18 whole and 6 tenths of a step, so these numbers of steps need to be rounded:

✓ Large number 18.6 rounded up = 19 steps

✓ The smaller number 14.7 is rounded down = 14 steps

In order to get a comfortable staircase, we must place from 14 to 19 steps.

➤Second step

Knowing the approximate number of steps, we can move on to the approximate placement of the elements of the stairs. We need to place the stair elements in such a way as to fall within the range of 14 to 19 steps.
In order to learn how to place the elements of the stairs, you need to understand what they are in general.

There are two options for the elements of the stairs: straight and rotary.

✔ Direct elements (marches)

✔ Rotary elements

Pay attention to the order in which these elements are placed. When we adjust these elements, we will first go from the simplest (1) to the most complex (5). In other words, if the 1st element does not match, we substitute the 2nd element, if it does not match, then the 3rd element, and so on.

How do we know if an element is suitable or not? This will become clear when we reach the end of the calculation of the metal stairs to the second floor.
In order to get the perfect staircase, we will customize these elements of the staircase: add steps, remove steps, make them wider, make them narrower. Instead of a mezzanine, try other elements of the stairs in descending order of the convenience of the element, make them wider and make them narrower.

Placement of stair elements starts with pivot elements. To begin with, we take an interfloor platform.

We have an interfloor platform with dimensions of 2000 mm by 1000 m.

The initial dimensions depend on your opening. Since we have an opening width of 2000 mm, the platform width is also 2000 mm. If the width of the opening were 1800 mm, then the width of the platform would be 1800 mm.

Now we need to place straight flights of stairs. To do this, you need to understand what distance we have in order to place flights of stairs. To do this, we do the following:

We have 2000 mm (2 m) to place the flight of stairs there.

This means that the length of the march will be 2000mm (2m).
We take a distance of 2000 mm (2 m) divided by the popular 250 mm step step).

I will answer in advance the question why we take a 250 mm (25 cm) step, because this is the most popular step part of the step and it is easier to do calculations from it, because it is divided into equal parts by 1000 mm (1m).

The most comfortable and therefore the most popular stair step 250 mm (25cm)

2000 (shaft length)/250 (step)=8 steps

Formula: shaft length / step section = number of steps

Since we have a shaft width of 3000 mm on both sides, we place the same marches on both sides. It turns out this picture:

➤Third step

Now pre check the stairs:

Let's count how many steps we got. It turned out 17 steps, 16 straight and 1 turning (interfloor platform is also considered a step, like all other turning fragments). Now let's calculate the riser.

Formula: Structure height / number of steps = riser size

In our example: 2800/17=164.7 mm

164.7 mm is the height of the riser. This is 164 millimeters and seven tenths of a millimeter. Naturally, this figure needs to be rounded off (even the ruler that is sold in the store, with divisions by millimeters, has its own error, like everything else in the world)

It will be impossible to make a staircase with a riser 164, 7. Since ordinary machines and grinders do not cut metal or wood with such an error.

And, since we do not build spaceship who will fly to Mars, but just a ladder, then we round this parameter to the nearest millimeter.

Summary: the height of the riser is rounded up to 165 mm

Let's summarize all the parameters, by which we will compare the convenience of the stairs.

You may be wondering: " Where does the error go? in 0.3 mm, if we rounded the numbers 164.7 to 165?" Answer: the deviation will go to the lower step, it will differ from all the others. 17 * 0.3 mm = 5.1 mm.

This means that the first stage will be 5.1 mm shorter than the rest.

If you have reached this point and understood everything, this is very cool!

Congratulations, you have now calculated the stairs for the first time!

Nevertheless, if this is a dark forest for you, it's okay, read the article to the end, there will be a calculation according to your size. But do not scroll down immediately, you need to catch at least a little the logic of the calculation.

➤Fourth step

We have a very comfortable design.

So we have 17 steps. 16 straight lines and one interfloor platform.

Riser height 165 mm, tread 250 mm.

But! There is still one indicator here - this is 17 rises, let's analyze it in more detail, I will tell you how it differs from the number of steps.
This indicator differs from the number of steps by 1 unit (add +1 to the number of steps, no more).

The number of lifts may differ from the number of steps!

It depends on the following: whether the floor of the second floor is used as a step or not.

This is one of the tricks, as with limited space for stairs, you can reduce the height of each step by at least 1 cm.

We're just making the top rung of the stairs the floor of the second floor (the right version in the photo above). Therefore, it may turn out that we have 17 steps and 18 rises.
We will display this additional rise with such a tail from the side of the upper step

Now we have two ladder options to choose from:

In this case, we will not consider other options, and from these options we will choose which staircase to make.

Of course, the most convenient option is the second, as it turned out to be an almost ideal height of the riser and a standard step.
The first version of the stairs will need to be installed only in case of some technical nuances at the facility. For example, it became necessary to lengthen the ceiling and make the frame occupy less space or on the wall to which the site adjoins, there is a window (heating radiator, switch box). In this case, you will have to sacrifice a little comfort by raising the interfloor platform, refusing an additional lift, due to the fact that they would make the floor of the second floor the last step.

Now you have accurately and finally counted the stairs!

Happened? Let's check!
How to check if your calculation is correct metal frame stairs:
Take a pencil, and right on the wall, starting from the bottom, draw the dimensions of the step. Thus, you can "feel" a little how the staircase will look, whether it will be comfortable. And if there are technical nuances at the place where the stairs will be (electrical panel, pipes, window, door), you can check whether there will be a jamb and whether it will be necessary to redo the stairs because of this nuance.

Or throw off the information to me (necessarily in the format in which I drew for our calculation) and I will definitely help you.

Also, this calculation does not provide for the presence of steps behind the opening under the stairs, but this can often be

If you yourself draw a future staircase on the wall with a pencil, then you can see how many more steps can be added to the staircase.

The price of painting staircases is sometimes very high, so many people decide to carry out this procedure with their own hands. The high cost of such work is due to serious technological requirements that must be strictly observed during painting.

In this case, the result will be durable.

Just once is enough to gain undeniable experience in this area. And already over time, when the stairs require their coverage, it will not be difficult for you to perform these works. In addition, the process of selecting the desired shade of paint and varnish is very exciting and will not take you much effort and time.

On wooden and metal stairs Negative influence external factors.

If this impact is prolonged, then the staircase structure can quickly become unusable:

  • Constant walking up the steps and holding a person by the handrails of the product affects the condition of these structural elements: the steps are erased and dirty, and scratches and stains appear on the handrails.

Note!
Staircases should be covered with a top coat especially carefully.
The duration of its use without restoration work will depend on how you paint the stairs.

  • It is also worth considering that even a structure placed in a house is subject to changes in humidity and temperature levels, which cannot but affect its condition after a while. For example, direct sunlight can dry out the stairs, so these elements of the product must be protected from drying out.

Choosing a quality coating

If you are thinking about how to paint the stairs in the house, then the following information will not be superfluous.

An important point when choosing a staircase cover is:

  • the type of wood from which it was constructed;
  • wood color;
  • product design features.

For example, pine can release resins that significantly impair the adhesion of the material to the paintwork. This does not happen with larches.

Also, the complexity of coloring needles lies in the fact that it absorbs the liquid part of the paintwork rather unevenly. Therefore, the instruction for applying paints and varnishes to such a surface states that at least 2-3 layers must be applied.

Dye

Choosing what to paint metal staircase or a wooden product, you should try to choose such a shade of paint in order to get as close as possible to the natural look of the structure.

After you decide on the color of the paint, you can proceed to the choice of its type:

  1. If the stairs are located in the house, and you are thinking about the best way to paint the stairs in the house, it is better to choose oil paint made on drying oil of artificial origin. Indeed, in this case, the negative factors that affect the product are much less than when it is located on the street;
  2. In case of outdoor structure you will need paint exclusively on drying oil of natural origin.

Advice!
Pigmented finishing materials are a good option.
They are able to hide design flaws that appeared during its assembly.

Do not forget, before applying such a coating, stairs defects can be puttied. However, at the same time, the filler can also hide some of the advantages of the wood structure.

Experts advise purchasing Tikkurila Empire alkyd paint, because it can be easily covered with a brush. high quality possesses and paint for wooden products(stairs, including) brands Betolux and Pesto. They lay down evenly and do not leave smudges.

For example, Betolux urethane-alkyd paint is suitable for already painted surfaces, but it does not have high wear resistance with constant use, so it is not used in crowded rooms. And Pesto alkyd paint is more durable, so it is used even in damp rooms that need to be washed frequently (an example is a nursery).

Lucky

When looking for an answer to the question of how to paint the stairs, experts will answer: "Colorless varnish!". And indeed, it is good because it does not mask, but on the contrary, highlights the woody texture.

Also, it is characterized by almost instant drying and ease of application.

Varnishes can be made with the addition of alcohol or nitrocellulose;

  1. The first option is a resin dissolved in an organic solvent.. It is used only when the staircase is located in the house, because when such a coating hardens, an insufficiently frost- and moisture-resistant film is formed;
  2. If it is necessary to paint the structure outdoors, it will be necessary to use a nitrocellulose coating. It contains substances such as colloxylin and plasticizers that can significantly strengthen the coating.

The highest quality paint brands are Parade and Trae Lyx.

Products German manufacturer Parade is characterized by:

  • special resistance to wear;
  • ease of use;
  • the ability to dry instantly;
  • she is missing bad smell, which is often found in products from other manufacturers.

The solid part of their composition is 35%, which leads to their use for painting stair structures of public buildings.

This material has several advantages:

  • colorless;
  • lays evenly on the surface to be painted;
  • does not change the degree of its brilliance.

However, it has one significant disadvantage: it takes quite a long time for such a coating to dry completely. It will be realistic to use the stairs after staining with such a tool in a week.

polishes

How to paint the stairs in the house so that it looks complete? To do this, after staining, the product is coated with polishes. Then it sparkles and shimmers in the sun.

The color of the material should match the color of the wood, not darken it. And the coating is applied with a brush or rags, after cleaning the surface.

enamels

To make the lifting structure an unusual accent throughout the interior, think about how to decorate the stairs in the house. To do this, you can use enamel. This material is able to give the staircase the necessary shade, and at the same time, protect the product from destructive factors.

Enamel is a gel-like substance - a mixture of colorless varnish and pigment, which is sprayed over the surface with an aerosol. Before use, the product is thoroughly stirred by shaking, and it turns into a liquid.

Experts say that Italian-made Sirca enamel is characterized by excellent properties. Swedish products of the Synteko brand have good quality. It is as environmentally friendly as possible due to the fact that NMP polymers, which are especially harmful to human and pet health, are not used in its manufacture.

Impregnation

Impregnations like stains or Pinotex have an antiseptic and fire-repellent effect. On top of such a tool, you can apply a layer of any finishing varnish.

Coloring technology

The stairs are painted in several stages:

  1. Preparatory. To begin with, the surface will need to be leveled by puttying and grinding. After that, it must be applied twice with a primer solution;

  1. Coloring. The process of painting stairs occurs in 2-3 layers. Moreover, a new layer of paint is applied along the fibers of the tree.

And this can be done only when the previous layer dries, which must be applied across the wood fibers;

  1. Lacquer opening. Lacquer is applied to the wood with a spray gun when it is required to paint the wide details of the stairs, and with a thin brush for narrow staircase elements.

The surface is pre-cleaned and polished. If there are any visible defects, you can use putty in the color of the tree. (see also article: choice of paints and varnishes and technology)

Conclusion

We told the instructions for painting the stairs and the materials that can be used. We hope that this information will become useful for you, and you will be able to choose the right paint yourself and do it yourself. In the presented video in this article you will find additional information on this topic.

Stairs are subjected to serious tests every day, and it's not just about physical activity. Regardless of the location - outdoors or indoors, the design is negatively affected environment: temperature changes, sudden changes in humidity, exposure to sunlight. In addition, they are periodically washed using a variety of detergents and not all of them carefully treat the surface of the stairs. All materials, from wood to metal, have certain vulnerabilities. In order to extend the life of the structure, you need to take care of its protection in advance. Painting stairs is a great option that does not require special skills or knowledge. The whole procedure can be done by hand.

How to paint a wooden staircase inside the house

First of all, it is necessary to understand that different types of wood react differently to a particular coating. Looser wood will absorb much more consumable and if you do not take this into account, then the paint may simply not be enough. If we are talking about conifers, then their main feature that you need to remember is the tendency to release resins. Because of this, the paintwork may not lie flat. Stairs made of hardwood do not have this feature, so it is much easier to work with them.

The following coatings are mainly used:

  • paints;
  • varnishes;
  • varnishes;
  • enamels;
  • impregnation.

Advice! When choosing a material for painting stairs, choose a shade that is as close to natural as possible. Otherwise, there is a chance to spoil the natural beauty of wood.

Painting a metal staircase

Houses with more than one floor are equipped with stair structures leading to the next floor. Many prefer to make them from metal, arguing the choice of high strength and reliability. In addition, the possibility of installing forged elements will significantly change the design of the stairs and the room as a whole. Despite all the advantages of a metal staircase, it has one, but a very significant drawback - it is subject to corrosion. With proper manufacture and treatment of metal with a protective coating, corrosion can be prevented.

According to experts, the duration of operation metal structure in the house directly depends on the quality and timely maintenance. If the recommendations are neglected, the material will very quickly lose its appearance and the structure will lose strength, and as a result, it will no longer be safe enough.

Important! The key to long-term operation of a metal structure is multi-stage surface treatment.

How to paint a staircase made of metal? Before proceeding, it is necessary to determine its condition.

Training

Like any similar work, painting the stairs begins with the preparation of the “base”. If places with rust are visible to the naked eye, then first of all you need to get rid of it. Otherwise, it will spread further, which can lead to complete destruction. For processing, you need a metal brush or sandpaper. It is necessary to clean until there are no exfoliating “flakes” left.

After that, you need to apply a rust converter. This substance is amazing. On contact with rust, chemical reaction, during which it turns into a neutral soil layer. Rust converter testing

Important! Do-it-yourself stairs usually have welded seams. them in without fail should be cleaned to a shine, because the welding points are most susceptible to corrosion.

If the metal surface has no traces of rust or the staircase in the house is new, then it is necessary to degrease it with a good solvent and only after that proceed with applying the primer. Thanks to this material, adhesion to various coatings is significantly improved. If the paint does not adhere well, cracks will appear in the coating and water will surely get into the cracks formed, which will destroy the metal very quickly.

Provided that a high-quality primer is used, it can be limited to applying only one layer. It is necessary to start applying the final coating only after waiting for complete drying. Otherwise, the coverage will be uniform. It is important to understand that the primer coating does not have protective properties. If you limit yourself to applying only it, there will be no effect. The primer only serves as a bonding material and not as a protective coating.

Actually painting

If you paint the stairs with your own hands, then you need to choose a good paintwork. First, it must be of high quality. Considering the service life of a metal structure, it is impossible to save. It is better to spend money once and not worry about the consequences. Secondly, the characteristics of the paint must correspond to the operating conditions. Despite the fact that the staircase is in the house, it is still exposed to the negative effects of moisture and the sun. If the stairs will move a large number of people, then you should think about a coating with high resistance to mechanical stress. Several layers of paint and varnish material must be applied to the steps and enclosing structures. Each subsequent layer should be applied only after the previous one has completely dried. Staged painting of a metal staircase

Outcome

First of all, you need to understand that such a task requires free time. And the larger the design, the more it is needed. There is nothing complicated in the process of painting with your own hands. You just need to decide on the paintwork that will be used, and familiarize yourself with some of the features and subtleties of the process. After preparing the surface, you can start painting. Careful execution of each stage of painting the stairs guarantees the desired result and a long service life. On the other hand, you can turn to professionals who, with knowledge of the matter, will perform the work as quickly as possible. In addition, they guarantee the quality of the result.

DIY Doing wooden stairs personally and wisely

Stairs are very sensitive to environmental influences. Even plain water has a negative effect on the coating, and in fact, various detergents are often used during cleaning. It must be borne in mind that all materials, be it wood, metal or concrete, have their own weak sides and may be damaged during use. Even those stairs that are indoors are exposed to changes in humidity, temperature fluctuations, and sunlight.

If you do not take care of surface protection in time, external factors will significantly reduce the life of the product. by the most effective way to prevent material aging is to cover the stairs with enamel, varnish, paint and stain. Depending on certain conditions, you can choose one or another paintwork. Let's figure out how to cover the stairs for you.

Oil paints

When choosing paint, consider the design of the room. The staircase should be in harmony with the interior, and not contradict in any way. Alkyd paints are easy to apply, urethane-alkyd paints are great for already painted surfaces, and pigmented paints will hide minor defects.

Paints are divided into thickened, sold in the form of a powder, which must be dissolved with drying oil, and ready for use. Drying oil can be artificial or natural. Artificial varnishes are cheaper, but give a lower quality coating.

For painting internal products that will only experience mechanical stress, paint for stairs on artificial drying oil is suitable. If it is supposed to process a street structure, then mixtures are needed exclusively on a natural basis;

Lacquer for stairs

If you want to paint the flight of stairs and at the same time emphasize the beauty natural wood, then you'd better buy stair lacquer. Most of them dry quickly and are easy to apply. To decide what kind of varnish to cover a wooden staircase, pay attention to the conditions of its operation and the type of wood from which the product is made.

Oil varnishes

is a mixture vegetable oils with artificial or natural resins, such as oil-rosin varnishes. When dry, the varnish forms a hard layer of yellowish color. Due to low resistance to external factors oil varnishes are used for painting stairs installed inside the house.

Alcohol varnishes

When alcohol interacts with natural resins, such as sandarac and shellac, varnishes are obtained with a concentration of 30-45%. Due to the high rate of weathering of alcohol and the low rate of dissolution of resins, it is possible to apply several layers without destroying the previous ones. Coatings with excellent resistance to mechanical damage and adhesion to most materials are obtained. The treated surfaces are well polished, but have low water resistance.

To date, oil and alcohol varnishes are produced in small volumes, since their production requires expensive natural raw materials. As a rule, they are used in special cases, for example, to cover musical instruments.

Alkyd varnishes

The films are transparent, hard, with a slight tint. Have good adhesion to many surfaces, waterproof. Suitable for both street and interior stairs. In everyday life, alkyd varnishes are often confused with oil varnishes - this is wrong, because, although vegetable oils are used in the production of alkyd resins, which have a serious impact on the characteristics of the final product, alkyd varnishes differ from oil varnishes in chemical and qualitative composition and significantly surpass them in properties.

Cellulose nitrate varnishes

Nitro-varnishes cover the surface with a dense, almost colorless, quick-drying film. Usually nitro-varnishes are used for varnishing wooden stairs. However, in some cases, they are used to paint a metal product, applying the last layer. Cellulose nitrate varnishes are great for indoor use, less often they are used for protection from natural factors.

Polyester varnishes

Surely, many have applied the epithet "polished" to the shiny surfaces of wooden fittings - this is the result of applying polyester varnishes. These protective coatings for wood are multi-component mixtures and require special precision. Polyester varnishes do not shrink, because the solvent does not evaporate during the curing process, but polymerizes with the dissolved resin; form solid thick films resistant to water and other reagents.

Based on them, high-quality automotive putties are produced.

Epoxy varnishes

They are used with special hardeners, the volume of which depends on the type of resin and the nature of the hardener itself. Epoxy varnishes are distinguished by increased resistance to water and alkalis, compatibility with other coatings and mechanical strength, however, they remain insufficiently weather resistant.

Polyurethane varnishes

They are characterized by exceptional mechanical strength and high wear resistance. Probably the best lacquer for stairs. Polyurethane coatings are expensive, but outstanding performance characteristics and extended term services offset the high cost. For example, parquet floors, stairs and fittings in the halls of museums and palaces, which are of artistic value, are covered with these varnishes.

Water-based polyurethane varnish refers to innovative developments. It combines the environmental friendliness of acrylic varnishes and the strength of polyurethane. Water-based varnishes are inferior to pure polyurethane, but the use of special additives significantly improves performance.

For varnishing large areas, a sprayer is useful, and if the stairs are small, then a wide brush will do.

Some varnishes are durable, resistant to wear, absolutely transparent and do not have a strong odor, but at the same time they have one significant drawback: it will be possible to use the stairs treated with this coating only a week after painting. If you are not satisfied with this prospect, use another paintwork that is also wear-resistant, but dries almost instantly. Naturally, it will cost more or be inferior to the first in a number of other characteristics.

enamels

Enamels are obtained by mixing coloring pigments and varnishes, combining the advantages of both materials. Enamels, like varnishes, envelop the surface with a shiny protective film, and, like paints, give a certain color. However, the enamel is destroyed by water, which is why it is almost never used to cover stairs.

There are glyptal, oil, nitro enamels and other types of enamels. Depending on the type of varnish added, you can get a glossy, matte or semi-matte surface.

Stains and impregnations

Mordant is a kind of impregnation, which also has antiseptic properties. After treatment with a stain, the tree becomes non-flammable. Sometimes, a layer of varnish is still applied on top. In this case, care must be taken to ensure that the stain and varnish for the stairs are compatible with each other.

When choosing a stain, it must be remembered that under its action the wood darkens slightly, the color becomes more saturated. For an inexperienced craftsman who decides what varnish to cover a wooden staircase with, wax or oil-based impregnations can be recommended, which can be applied in several layers. There are also alcohol impregnations and nitro impregnations.

Oil for stairs

To date, oils are produced using modern technologies and have a base of wax and natural vegetable oils. The product contains:

  • jojoba oil;
  • sunflower oil;
  • linseed oil;
  • candelilla wax;
  • carnauba wax;
  • beeswax.

Oils for painting stairs are a worthy replacement for traditional varnish. The material is deeply absorbed into the surface, forming a protective coating for wood, withstands significant loads and highlights the texture of wood. The surface of the steps acquires excellent performance characteristics. In addition, the oil has good bactericidal properties: tree fungi and mold do not form on the treated surface. Suitable for use in high traffic areas.

Advantages:

  • ease of application;
  • has water-repellent properties;
  • suitable for local repairs;
  • increases the level of wear resistance;
  • no unpleasant odor;
  • is an environmentally friendly product.

After you have decided how to paint the stairs, you can proceed directly to the processing of the material. If you do not have sufficient experience, seek the help of professionals, but remember that this will affect the final cost. If you are going to do everything yourself, then let's take a closer look at how to paint a wooden staircase.

How to paint a wooden staircase

The surface must be prepared before painting. The painting technology largely depends on the type of wood, on whether you want to hide the texture of the tree or, on the contrary, highlight it, and what exactly you decided to cover the flight of stairs with.

Preparatory work

If dense staining is expected, then the surface of the stairs must be carefully cleaned and covered with putty, which will hide all chips. Then the wood is polished, and the work is carried out in two stages with a break of several days. This is how the maximum result is achieved. After that, a primer is applied.

If painting has been done before, try applying urethane-alkyd paint to a small area. If the layer lies evenly, does not exfoliate or warp, then you can continue. Otherwise, you will have to remove old paint. To do this, use a flush composition. Alternatively, you can try heating the wood with a blow dryer and then scraping the paint off with a spatula.

Deresining of coniferous wood

Coniferous stairs, such as pine, require special attention. This material, due to its cheapness and ease of processing, is very popular, but requires additional processing - deresining. It is necessary for several reasons:

  • the protruding resin creates a sticky film that prevents the absorption of the protective composition;
  • places where resin accumulates darken and look ugly;
  • because of the resin, the product is painted unevenly and of poor quality.

Wood deresining is a process of wood surface treatment for the purpose of complete or partial removal of excess resin. Basically, various solvents are used for deresining. For pine the best choice there will be a 25% solution of technical acetone, which should be applied with a brush, and then rinse the treated surface warm water and dry thoroughly. Too large tarred places will have to be cut with a knife and patched with putty.

Listed below are the components that make up the deresin solution.

  1. hot water - 1 l;
  2. potash - 50 grams;
  3. baking soda - 45-50 grams;
  4. soap flakes - 30-40 grams;
  5. acetone - 200 grams;
  6. alcohol - 10 grams;

Further painting of pine stairs is possible only after the tree is completely dry.

Painting a wooden staircase with your own hands

It is important to know not only what, but also how to paint the stairs. It is best to apply paint and varnish coatings with a spray gun. There are electric and pneumatic sprayers. With their help, you can cover the product with an even layer. But if this device is not available, ordinary wide brushes will do. With thick and slow-drying paints, it is recommended to work with brushes with a short and hard bristle. For more fluid finishes, use soft hair brushes, also called flute brushes. The brush should be held at a 45 degree angle to the work surface. To clean the brush, soak it in solvent or turpentine.

The paint coating should be applied in 2-3 layers, evenly distributing over the entire surface of the product. First paint one side, then turn over and cover the other side. In this case, it is necessary to have time to paint the entire surface before the coating dries, so that there are no bumps and smudges. In order to make it more convenient to work, and the paint or varnish is not smeared, it is necessary to adapt wooden stands. And periodically stirring the paint, you will prevent the appearance of lumps and sediment.

  1. When deciding how to cover the steps, keep in mind that it is better not to use glossy enamels, as the painted surface will become slippery. If you decide to use varnish for stairs, then give preference to matte or semi-matte finishes that will hide the flaws;
  2. If you know how to properly paint a wooden staircase, then it is not a secret for you that the paintwork must be applied in three layers. The first layer of paint is applied along the structure of the tree, then across the fibers and again along. Each subsequent layer is applied only after the previous one has dried;
  3. In the case when long-drying varnishes or paints are used, and there is no spare lift, it is recommended to coat the wooden staircase with varnish through the step. So you will be able to operate it, although it is not very convenient;
  4. Before you paint or varnish the stairs, make sure that not only the steps and railings shine clean, but the whole room is cleaned. Otherwise, the dust will settle on a dry surface and spoil all the work.

How to paint a metal staircase

In a private house there is sure to be a metal staircase, the durability of which largely depends on protective coating. Therefore, you need to know how and with what to paint the stairs.

In this case preparatory work come down to rust removal. For this, a grinder with a hard wire brush, sandpaper or special solvents can be used.

After the rust is removed, the metal surface is degreased and coated with a primer. The stairs can only be painted after the primer is completely dry. Places where there was rust, it is recommended to handle especially carefully.

If you are working on a ladder that has welded seams, be sure to sand them to a shine.

The coating of a metal staircase must be highly resistant to abrasion and environmental influences. Choosing the right enamel or paint , proceed directly to the application of paintwork. If the staircase has been previously painted, coat a small area. If, after drying, the paint lies well and the old layer does not shine through it, you can continue to work. If the quality does not satisfy you, the old paint will have to be removed.

The painting of the steps should be carried out very carefully, usually twice as many layers are applied to them as to other elements.

Painting a concrete staircase

Painting concrete not only gives the product a more attractive appearance, but also protects the surface from premature wear, damage, and weathering.

The following options are possible:

  1. adding coloring pigments to the concrete mixture;
  2. painting a finished staircase, as in the case of a wooden or metal structure.

In the first case, special pigments are used that are resistant to moisture and sunlight. To achieve cleaner tones, it is recommended to use white concrete. This method allows you to get more saturated color and uniform coverage. The disadvantage is the high cost, laboriousness and inability to use ready-made concrete stairs.

The second option provides that flights of stairs covered with special paints for concrete:

  • one;
  • acrylic;
  • polyurethane.

At the stage pre-training the stairs are sanded to eliminate irregularities and primed to ensure better adhesion to the surface. And then, having decided what color to paint the stairs, you apply the coating to the steps with a wide roller with a medium length pile.
