Zephyranthes is a tender bulbous perennial. The genus belongs to the Amaryllis family. To many gardeners, he is known as the "upstart". This houseplant is not new in our country and many consider it too common. However, modern varieties of zephyranthes will interest exotic lovers. If you properly care for it, then flowering will be plentiful and frequent, which will definitely appeal to adherents of miniature flower beds on the windowsill.

plant description

Zephyranthes is a flowering bulbous plant that covers wet rainforests Central and South America fragrant carpet. Flowers bloom during the rainy season, when the Zephyr wind begins to blow. Therefore, the name of the plant can be translated as "zephyr flower". It is also called a room lily, "upstart" or home daffodil.

The root system of zephyranthes is a small oblong or rounded bulbs up to 3.5 cm long. A small basal neck rises above the ground, from which a few leaf rosettes grow. Narrow belt-like leaves of bright green color can reach a length of 20-35 cm. The width of smooth glossy leaves is only 0.5-3 mm.

Flowering begins in April and can last all summer. A long peduncle with a single flower grows quite quickly from the center of the leaf rosette. The shape of the bud resembles a crocus. Six lanceolate petals with a pointed edge are wide open to the sides, the core is decorated with short bright yellow anthers. Flowers may be white, yellow or pink. The diameter of the flower is 4-8 cm. Each bud lasts only 1-3 days.

Types of room lily

Among the 40 species of zephyranthes that can be found in the natural environment, no more than 10-12 are grown in culture. The most common are white-flowered zephyranthes.

reproduction

Zephyranthes are propagated by sowing seeds and separating bulbous children. Seeds are sown immediately, as after just a few months they lose their germination. Landing is carried out in shallow boxes with a sand-peat mixture. Seeds are distributed in the ground in shallow holes, at a distance of 3-4 cm from each other. The soil is sprayed and covered. The greenhouse must be placed in a warm place with a temperature of about + 22 ° C and ventilated daily. Young sprouts will appear in 13-20 days. The grown seedlings are planted in pots with soil for adult plants in several pieces. This makes it easier to get dense vegetation. Flowering seedlings are expected in 2-4 years.

Reproduction by bulbs is considered more convenient way. Every year, 4-5 young children are formed near older bulbs. It is enough in the spring during transplantation to carefully separate the soil from the bulbs without damaging the roots, and plant them more freely. adaptation period and special conditions content is not needed in this case. Flowering is possible already a year after planting the children.

Transfer

It is recommended to repot zephyranthes every 2-3 years, although some flower growers advise doing this every spring. The pot of zephyranthes should be wide and not too deep. You can use rectangular flowerpots for the entire windowsill or several small containers. Some growers like to combine plants with different petal colors in the same pot.

Zephyranthes needs a good drainage system because it does not tolerate stagnant water. The earth should be nutritious and light, with neutral or weak acidity. For the preparation of soil mixtures are used:

  • sand;
  • leafy humus;
  • soddy soil.

When transplanting, they try to remove most of the old earthy coma. After the procedure, reduce watering for several days and try not to move the pot.

Zephyranthes Care

Caring for zephyranthes at home does not require much effort, the plant is considered unpretentious and survivable. Upstarts love the bright sun and long daylight hours. They are recommended to be placed on the southwestern window sills and in bright rooms. For the summer, it is better to take the zephyranthes flower to the balcony or garden.

The upstart prefers cool rooms, therefore, at an air temperature of more than + 25 ° C, it suffers from heat. To alleviate the condition of the flower, you need to ventilate the room more often. The optimum air temperature is +18…+22°C. In winter, it is lowered to + 14 ... 16 ° C. Some varieties can withstand temperatures down to +5°C.

There are types of zephyranthes that need a dormant period after flowering. They shed their leaves, leaving only the bulbs. For several months, the pot with the plant is stored in a cool, dark room and only slightly moistens the soil.

Zephyranthes prefer moist air, but can adapt to drier atmospheres as well. To prevent the leaves from drying out, it is useful to occasionally spray the crown with a spray bottle.

Watering the upstart should be very careful, as the bulbs are prone to rot. Between waterings, the soil should dry out by a third, and excess water should be immediately poured out of the pan.

Difficulties in care

With excessive dampness and excessive watering Zephyranthes are prone to root rot. One of the signs of rotting bulbs is that the leaves turn yellow and dry. In this case, you need to renew the land, remove the infected parts of the plant and treat with a fungicide.

Sometimes flower growers are faced with the fact that zephyranthes does not bloom. The reason may lie in the wrong selection of the pot. If it is too large and deep, the plant will actively increase the root mass, and there will be no strength left for flowering.

From the tropics. Most spathiphyllum-like flowers belong to the aroid family. This group includes decorative deciduous and beautiful flowering plants.

Indoor flowers of the Aroniev family attract attention with large leaves original form and often of an unusual color. Many of them bloom beautifully with peculiar cobs, covered with a coverlet of various shades.

Anthurium is a plant with a very spectacular appearance. Anthurium leaves are large, leathery, incised or whole. The size of the sheet is from several centimeters to one meter in length. The leaves have a velvety sheen and a silvery sheen on the veins. The leaves of some types of anthurium are decorated with an ornamental pattern created by veins.

The flowers of the plant are unusually beautiful and original in shape. They are collected in an inflorescence-cob of a tubular or tail-like shape. The cob is shrouded in a bract of pink or red. In some species, the coverlet is light green or bluish-blue.

Calla is a herbaceous perennial native to South Africa. blooming in winter or in early spring with elegant and even exquisite flowers on elongated peduncles. The inflorescence is an ear, covered with a coverlet, gracefully wrapped around.

The hue of the bedspread is varied: yellow, white, lilac, pinkish, blue, purple and even blue-black. In most varieties, the color of the bedspread is iridescent, from darker at the base, to lighter closer to the edge.

Alocasia - rare exotic plant, native to the tropics of Southeast Asia. AT room conditions practically does not bloom, therefore it belongs to decorative and deciduous plants. The leaves of alocasia are oval, with sharp tips and distinct veins of a contrasting color. There are varieties with striped leaves.

The length of the leaf reaches a plant of 50 centimeters, and the height is 150 centimeters. In the wild, alocasia can grow up to 3 meters in height and form leaves with a diameter of up to 1 meter. Under natural conditions, alocasia is a plant with white flowers that have a delicate aroma. Small flowers are collected in neat inflorescences of a pale pink color.

Caladium is a plant common in Brazil, South and Central America. The main advantage of this plant is highly decorative leaves of various colors.

The leaves are found in shades of red, pink, green, yellow-green, white. The leaf plate is decorated with a variety of veins, a contrasting edging along the edge or a spectacular mesh.

Caladium flowers are inconspicuous: small cobs collected in small inflorescences. The cobs are covered with a white veil.

Marsh calla (marsh calla) is a conspicuous inhabitant of the shores of lakes and wetlands. The natural habitat of the plant is the climatic zone of the Northern Hemisphere. The height of the calla is from 15 to 50 centimeters. The plant is unpretentious, and if there is enough moisture, it can live even at sub-zero temperatures.

Calla leaves are wide in the core area and pointed at the ends. The surface of the leaf plate is smooth, shiny, with prominent silvery veins. The leaves are formed directly from the rhizome. Their length is from 5 to 11 centimeters.

The calla flower grows from the leaf axils. It is a vertical cob of yellow- Green colour with a snow-white inside and a green outside covering sheet-bedspread.

Eucharis (or Amazonian lily) is a plant of the Amaryllis family. Its leaves are completely identical to spathiphyllum, and until flowering, these two plants can be completely confused. But the flowering of the two plants is completely different.

Eucharis blooms with snow-white bells, collected in inflorescences of 4-5 pieces. They are located on a high peduncle rising from the center of the leaf rosette. Skilled flower growers achieve flowering eucharis twice a year.

The flowers are large, 10 centimeters in diameter. Snow-white petals are pointed at the tips. In the center of the flower, a greenish-yellow crown with a jagged edge stands out, which gives the flower a resemblance to a narcissus.

Aspidistra is an alien from the shady subtropical forests of Japan and southern China. In Russia, it has long been grown as a houseplant. Aspidistra achieves high decorativeness due to a large number broad at the base and pointed at the tips of the leaves growing directly from the soil.

The color of the leaves of the plant is dark or light green, in some species with longitudinal cream stripes.

The flowers of the plant are rather modest: they resemble small dark purple spiders located almost at the bases of the leaves. They appear on the plant only in conditions as close as possible to natural ones.

It is quite difficult to achieve such a correspondence to the tropical climate in room conditions, therefore the flowering of aspidistra is a rare occurrence.

Probably you, like many, have a flower at home that looks like a small onion in appearance. How to perform proper care for zephyranthes at home? We will also talk about how the landing of zephyranthes is performed.

It is often referred to as a domestic daffodil. Its flowers are quite simple, but when a hat of white buds grows in its foliage, beauty is admirable. As you probably already understood, this is the handsome daffodil!

Speaking in more detail about his appearance Zephyranthes flower, then you need to say the following.

Description and pedigree of zephyranthes

Simple in appearance, but very gentle narcissus is considered to be the birthplace of Central and South America.

Zephyranthes is a houseplant, perennial bulbous plant belonging to the Amaryllis family.

In Greek, it sounds like "Zephyr" in the translation of Zephyr, which means the name of the Greek God. This name means the western warm breeze "anthes", which in turn means "flower" in translation.

Zephyranthes means "water lily". Flower growers, on the other hand, call him an upstart.

Flowering of zephyranthes traditionally begins in April and lasts until July. At this time, the beginning of the rainy season in his homeland.

At this time, its flower stalks are growing rapidly, completely imperceptibly.

Zephyranthes flower at the very tip blooms in the shape of a six-pointed star and the color depends on the variety.

When opened, the flower lives only about 2 days, after which it fades, then a new flower blooms.

Thus, its continuous flowering cycle allows you to enjoy its beauty.

The bulb of the flower is ovoid in appearance and usually its diameter reaches 3 cm in diameter; larger specimens are also found, but less often.

If we talk about reproduction, then it should be said that Zephyranthes reproduces easily.

One "mommy" can give up to 15 children. Alternatively, you can, of course, wait for the seeds by planting them and waiting for the bulbs, but this is quite a long time and for this reason this method is used very rarely. If, despite the duration of the method, you still decide to breed with seeds, then you should know that planting zephyranthes seeds should begin immediately after harvest. after even a short time, the seeds lose their qualities.

There are many opinions about the transplantation of zephyranthes. Someone is an adherent of transplanting once a year in spring or autumn, someone advises to refrain from transplanting until the time comes for transplanting into a pot, and someone is sure that you should dig up a flower in general in spring for planting.

The preferred option may be without annual digging with transplants. It is enough just to look after the onions so that the bulbs are not too crowded in the pot. When there are more of them, it just looks amazing, and when it blooms, there are not enough words at all to convey its beauty.

In the case when a lot of onions were born, then you can simply separate them during transplantation.

And do not forget at the time of transplanting zephyranthes, the bulbs may have long necks. In this case, you need to plant so that the neck peeks out of the ground. And in the case when the neck is short, then it should be buried completely.

Which pots are best for him

And a little about pots. For zephyranthes, low bowls are best suited and at the same time wide, depending on the number of onions that you are going to plant. And in without fail a decent layer of drainage should be placed at the bottom of the pot. And it is clear that after transplantation, the flower is not watered for several days.

Zephyranthes bait

Zephyranthes can be fertilized with any fertilizer for bulbous plants once every two weeks.

This is how you need to care for zephyranthes at home, since you have decided to start this flower.
