Do-it-yourself door opener. What are door stops and latches, features of their installation

In this master class, we will clearly demonstrate to you how to make a convenient, stylish and practical stopper for a door with your own hands. It will be combined in it: metal, concrete and natural wood. Details in step by step instructions.

materials

To make a do-it-yourself door stopper, prepare:

  • components for the preparation of concrete mortar;
  • a piece of board;
  • U-bolt;
  • Lego;
  • water;
  • container for diluting a mixture of concrete;
  • epoxy adhesive;
  • grinder;
  • wax, stain or varnish;
  • sealant for concrete;
  • needle nose pliers;
  • a block of wood;
  • a piece of thin plastic;
  • roulette;
  • vise or clamps and pieces of lumber.

Step 1. Decide on the approximate parameters of the stopper that you will make. Make sure the piece of board you choose is the right size for you. Start building a concrete mold with Lego bricks.

Step 2. Mix the concrete solution in the prepared container. It should have a consistency similar to shortbread dough.

Step 3. On the desktop, fix the form of Lego blocks with clamps, prudently sending a piece of board or plastic to the bottom.

Step 4. Pour the concrete solution into the prepared mold. You can create vibrations for better shrinkage using a conventional grinder. Just attach it to the mold wall and turn it on for a short period of time.

Step 5. Take a block of wood and a bent bolt. Place the ends of the bolt in the concrete solution, and so that it does not fall into it, send a bar under the resulting handle. Adjust the workpiece to the height of the handle. Leave everything until the concrete has completely hardened.

Step 6. Using needle-nosed pliers, disassemble the shape of the lego mold.

Step 7. Smooth out sharp corners using a grinder, sandpaper or a sanding block.

Step 8. Allow the concrete block to dry thoroughly for two weeks. In the meantime, fit a piece of board to the specified parameters, which will be sent to the base of the stopper. Sand it and treat it with stain, wax or varnish.

Step 9. For sealing concrete and its better appearance cover the workpiece with the appropriate material. This is a mandatory step for stoppers that will be located from the side of the street.

If the door travel is not restricted, the handle installed on the door may damage the wall covering when opened. To avoid this, a door stop must be installed. Depending on the place of installation, they are divided into floor and wall. In addition, the opening limiters for interior or entrance doors may differ in design, that is, they can be stationary or mobile (portable). Which type to choose depends on both your preferences and the layout features.

The design of these simple, but at the same time very useful devices, is quite simple, so it’s not difficult to make them yourself, the main thing is to find some free time and patience for this.

We make a limiter with our own hands

Consider two versions: one stationary - floor, the second - mobile. The first requires skills in working with hand tool, the second will appeal to those who like to do needlework.

Production and installation of a floor stop for a door

To make a floor stop, you need to prepare the following tools:

  • ordinary scissors for cutting metal;
  • drills for steel and concrete;
  • impact electric drill or puncher (for the latter you will need a nozzle for conventional drills);
  • screwdriver or screwdriver;
  • soft pencil for drawing on metal and a corner.

Necessary materials:

  • steel plate;
  • "quick mounting" (screws with dowels), needed to attach the floor stop.

The manufacturing technology is quite simple:

  • using scissors, cut a steel strip of arbitrary length;
  • the finished strip is bent at an angle of 90 °;
  • holes are drilled for fasteners in the strip and in the floor;
  • using the "quick installation", we screw the steel corner.

So that the floor stop does not spoil the upholstery or door covering, we recommend making a soft cover for it, for example, make a cover from leatherette with foam rubber stuffing.

If a wall stop for doors is required, the same principle is used, with the exception of the fixing point of the device, it is not mounted on the floor, but on the wall.

Having shown a certain imagination, it will not be difficult to make and install with your own hands a floor door opening limiter that succinctly fits into the style of the interior of the room.

Mobile soft fabric restraint

The shape of the limiter can be any, it all depends on your taste and imagination, for example, you can make an animal figurine with your own hands or in the form of a sheet exotic plant. For work, we need the following materials and tools:

  • sheet of tracing paper;
  • piece of fabric (the choice depends on your preferences);
  • any material for stuffing, for example, sintepuh or foam rubber;
  • chalk or pencil for drawing on fabric;
  • a skein of threads of the same tone with the selected material;
  • any model of sewing machine;
  • tailor's scissors;
  • a set of pins;
  • if you want to decorate the stopper, then you should choose the appropriate accessories.

As you can see, this is almost a standard sewing kit.

Most optimal size for the figure will be in the range from 30 to 40 centimeters. A large product looks bulky, and a small one will not perform its function. After you decide on the pattern, you can start making patterns. To do this, transfer the pattern to tracing paper and carefully cut it out. The pattern is pinned to the fabric with pins and outlined in chalk or pencil. Before trimming, be sure to leave a margin (seam allowances).

When all the details are cut out, they are folded face to face and grinded with a small seam, so that it is possible to turn them inside out and insert the packing.

Small details of the figurine, for example, petals (if you are making a plant-shaped limiter) are completely filled with stuffing, a weighting agent must be added to the main part. Sand or sea pebbles can play its role. The weight of the weighting agent should be in the region of 250 - 350 grams. To prevent small fractions from waking up through the fabric, they should be placed in an airtight bag. As it can be used a regular plastic bag. Make sure that the material used for the filler does not have sharp edges that can cause damage to both the fabric and the door upholstery or wall covering.

This type of do-it-yourself limiter does not require special installation, it is hung on the door handle and can be removed at any time if necessary. As for the shape and color, there are no restrictions for the manifestation of your imagination.

There are quite a few options for making limiters for a door with your own hands. Each of them is worthy of attention, as it allows you to equip a stopper for the canvas with minimal cost funds and personal effort. Which method to choose depends on personal preference. It is worth considering the most popular options.

You can easily make a door stopper with your own hands

Functions and types of limiters

Installing a limiter is a necessary measure if the canvas can touch furniture when plowing. This is especially true if there is glass or mirrors near the passage. In this case, use floor, door stoppers or items that can replace them.

The stopper performs the following functions:

  • limiting the course of the canvas when plowing;
  • protection of the door and nearby objects from damage;
  • decorative addition to the interior.

With the help of the limiter, you can protect the door and nearby objects

You can make such a device with your own hands, despite the fact that such products are sold in many furniture and hardware stores. There are many options for execution, but it is worth noting the most successful of them.

soft option

The most interesting in execution is the soft limiter. Making such a product for the door with your own hands is not difficult. The principle of its manufacture is based on the creation of a tilde with synthetic filling.

In order for such a stopper to have sufficient mass, prepare sand, small pebbles or some similar materials in advance.

A soft limiter is hung on the handle on the side of the door into which it swings open. To do this, you need to provide for the presence of a special loop.

The design and coloring of a kind of doll is a personal matter for everyone. You can find ready-made patterns of patterns or draw your own version yourself.

The soft limiter additionally serves as an interior decoration

To sew such a stopper, you will need fabric, threads, pins and a synthetic winterizer or holofiber for filling. The volume of the doll should be sufficient to soften the blow. All parts are cut in duplicate. They are folded face to face and stitched, leaving a small area unsewn for filling. Each element is turned inside out, stuffed with filler and sewn up with a blind seam. Then you need to sew all the fragments together.

furniture limiter

The easiest option is to take a ready-made stopper. Such products can be found among furniture fittings. You can even use a limiter from an old cabinet.

Do-it-yourself installation of a furniture door stop is done using a screwdriver and self-tapping screws. One part of the product is fixed on the box, and the second - on the canvas itself. In this case, the length of the rod can be adjusted, which allows you to choose the degree of restriction of movement of the door.

The easiest option is to use a ready-made furniture limiter

floor stopper

The best option for most rooms - a stationary floor stopper for the door. It can also be made by hand. At its core, this design is very simple, so you will need minimum set tools. Let's consider two options:

  1. Wood. Take small size bar, preferably round in cross section. Measure the required distance. You can make a stopper 3-5 cm high, or you can increase it to 10 cm. If a fine tree is used, then you need to immediately treat it with a stain of the desired shade and open it with varnish. At the same time, please note that the entire surface of the part must be carefully sanded. Then take a double self-tapping screw or stud and screw it in from the back side from the end. For installation, you need to choose a place on the floor, drill a hole, insert the dowel and drive the stopper there, gradually twisting it to the very end.
  2. Metal. The principle of creating such a limiter is the same as for a wooden model, but there are subtleties here. First you need to cut the tube right size. A great option is stainless steel. For the top of the limiter, take a plastic plug. On the reverse side, fix the plate with screws. The installation principle is as follows: select a place on the floor, drill holes for the plate and fix it with screws.

Types of floor stopper for the door

To edge door leaf do not fight back against the limiter, additionally fasten the elastic bands on it. For example, you can take plumbing volumetric gaskets.

A door stopper is a great option that allows you to protect the canvas itself and nearby objects from damage. In addition, it can become a stylish addition to the interior, especially if you do everything yourself, taking into account personal wishes.

Probably, every person has encountered a problem when the door leaf slams loudly. In addition, when opening the door from hitting the wall, chips remain on it, which also do not decorate the room. To get rid of such problems once and for all, it is enough to buy and install a door stop. First you need to deal with the existing proposal, choose the type of limiter that is best suited in a particular case, and any home master can install it with his own hands.

What are door stops and locks for?

If you often hear the sound of a door hitting when you open it in your house, a door stopper will help solve this problem once and for all. It is a device that provides protection for doors, walls and nearby objects from chips and damage. This is a small detail, but it helps to significantly increase the life of the door leaf, as well as protect the walls from damage when the door is carelessly opened. By installing such a device, you will be relieved of the need to frequently change the decoration of the wall next to the entrance.

Without installing a door stop, opening the door may damage the wall or nearby furniture.

The door stop allows you to set the maximum opening width of the door leaf or reduce the speed of its movement. Some models securely fix the door in a given position, depriving it of the ability to open or close on its own. There is a fairly wide selection of such devices, which differ from each other both in shape and design, and in appearance.

Types of door stops

Door stops vary:

  • at the place of installation - they are floor, wall or door;
  • according to the principle of operation - there are ordinary, magnetic, vacuum and mechanical stops.

Since interior and entrance doors have different sizes and weights, different limiters are used for them. An ordinary person, faced with the problem of choosing such a device, may be confused by the available choice. To prevent this from happening, you need to navigate in the terms used:

  • stop - a device that limits the opening angle of the web, and sometimes fixes it when it reaches the end point;

    The stop allows you to fix the canvas in the desired position

  • bump stop - prevents the canvas from hitting a wall, furniture or other object that is in the way of opening the door;

    The chipper prevents the door leaf from hitting the wall

  • stopper - designed to fix the door in a certain position;

    The stopper allows you to fix the door in the desired position

  • overlay - does not allow the door to slam arbitrarily;

    The overlay does not allow the door to close arbitrarily

  • latch - fixes the canvas in the closed position. Some experts attribute such a device to locks, others to stops;

    The latch secures the door in the closed position

  • closer - in addition to ensuring smooth closing of the door leaf, it also limits the angle of its opening.

    The closer limits the opening angle of the door leaf and ensures its smooth closing

Floor models

Floor door stoppers are installed directly on the floor covering and are divided into two types according to the type of their action:

  • holding the door leaf in a predetermined position;
  • controlling the degree of opening of the door.

According to the installation method, such limiters are divided into:

  1. Mobile or mobile. In specialized stores, such stops are presented in a wide range and can have a wide variety of designs: in the form of letters, toys, wedges, etc. Models that are worn on the lower edge of the door leaf have become widespread. Such limiters have an anti-slip coating, abut on both sides of the door and do not allow it to move in either direction.

    Mobile floor limiter can have a wide variety of shapes

  2. Stationary. Such models are mounted on the floor in a certain place and are intended for permanent use. They can be of several types:

When choosing a place for mounting a floor limiter, one must take into account the fact that it should not interfere with free movement, otherwise it is easy to get a leg injury by hitting a latch rigidly screwed to the floor.

wall models

In those rooms where it is not possible or undesirable to fix the door stop on the floor (expensive parquet, natural marble floor or other unique coating), great solution there will be wall models. Such devices are slightly more expensive than outdoor ones and come in several types:

  • in the form of a rod - they are an emphasis with a platform for mounting and a rubber shock absorber mounted on a rod, the length of which can vary from 5 to 15 cm. Before buying a wall model, you need to decide which wall you will mount it on. There is no difference for a brick, and if it is made of drywall, then it is necessary that the size of the fastening part be at least 10x10 cm. This will ensure reliable fastening of the stop, and the wall will not break through from the impact;

    A conventional wall stop is a stop with a mounting platform

  • with a magnetic latch - they differ from the floor version only in the place of installation;
  • overlays. If you think that a wall-mounted shock absorber with a stem does not look very beautiful, you can install a pad under the handle. It is located on the wall opposite the door handle and is usually attached to double-sided tape, so you don’t have to drill the wall;

    To limit the opening of the door on the wall, they often mount an overlay under the handle.

  • with fixing the position of the door. In this case, the stopper is attached to the wall, and the hook is attached to the door. When the door is opened, the hook rises and the canvas is securely fixed in the open position. To close the door, such a latch must be unlocked manually.

    After opening the door, the hook securely fixes it in the open position.

Door fittings

Overdoor stops are installed directly on the door leaf, so the walls and floor are not damaged. Fastening is done with glue or self-tapping screws.

  1. The simplest is the tape stop. It is a strong tape, at the ends of which there are places for fixing it to the jamb and the canvas. In order for the tape limiter to serve for a long time, it is necessary to purchase models that have high strength and elasticity.

    The tape limiter has special platforms for fastening to the canvas and the jamb

  2. For front door An excellent option would be a folding stop. During installation, the angle of stop relative to the floor must be observed. The best option is when it is 45 o, at a smaller angle, the mechanism may break.

    The folding stop is activated by pressing the foot, and in the retracted position it securely snaps onto the clip

  3. The retractable stop is made with a rod and a brake shoe. Its installation is carried out in a vertical position. You can also operate such a device with your foot, and in order to raise it, you will need to manually bend the side plate.

    Raise the retractable stop with your hands

    The sliding overdoor limiter allows you to fix the canvas at different points, their number depends on the number of cutouts in the groove of the device. A rod is fixed on the canvas, and the device itself is installed on the door jamb. Since this limiter is installed in the upper part of the leaf, it does not interfere with the operation of the door.

    The sliding limiter allows you to fix the canvas at several points

  4. Soft overlays. Protect the door from accidental slamming. Their use allows you to protect children's hands from the possibility of being squeezed by doors. To install such devices, simply put them on the door leaf.

    Soft pads are installed on the door leaf and protect hands from accidentally getting into the space between the door and the jamb

Anti-vandal restraints

There are models of limiters that allow you to protect the house from illegal entry. Most simple options may simply make a loud sound when in contact with the door leaf. More expensive models send an alarm signal to the security console or to a mobile phone.

Anti-vandal limiter allows you to protect the house from thieves

This type of limiters can be both floor and over-door. Floor models are available in the form of polymer wedges or other suitable shape. Overdoor stops are put on the door leaf and are also made of soft materials. The free-standing stops do not need to be locked in place, so they can be used anywhere and anytime.

Freely positioned stops do not require fastening and can fix the door in any position

Magnetic or vacuum stops

A feature of the magnetic limiter is that it not only prevents the door from swinging open at an angle greater than the specified one, but also ensures its fixation in the open position. A metal plate is installed on the canvas, and a magnet is placed on the limiter itself. To fix doors of different weights, you need to choose a magnet of the appropriate power.

Instead of a magnet, a vacuum lock can be used on such limiters. In this case, a rubber suction cup is installed on the door, which repeats the shape of the limiter. When opening the door, the suction cup is securely connected to the limiter and ensures that the door leaf is held open.

Vacuum stop keeps door open with suction cup

ball detents

Ball devices are designed to fix the door in the closed position and do not allow it to open spontaneously. These are small devices, one part of which is mounted in the door leaf, and the second - on the door jamb. These models are usually applied to interior doors that do not need long-term locking. Due to the presence of an internal spring, the ball securely fixes the door, and after pressing the canvas, even a child can open it.

The ball lock securely holds the door closed, and it will not be difficult to open it if necessary

Installation of door opening limiters

Most often, floor or wall door stops are used, so we will consider the installation process using their example. To complete the work you will need:

Mounting the floor stop

Consider the installation of a conventional metal floor door stop. It can have a different shape, for example, in the form of a pin or a hemisphere, as well as different heights.

Work on the installation of the floor limiter is carried out in the following sequence:

  1. Preparation of tools and inspection of the limiter assembly. Usually, the kit includes a screw and a dowel for fixing the stop, but if they are not there, you need to prepare the fasteners separately.

    Checking the complete set of the door stop

  2. Site selection and marking. For right choice the installation site, it is necessary to open the door leaf so that it does not reach the wall or furniture by 3–5 cm. Don't forget to consider the size of the door handle. The place for the stop is chosen approximately in the center of the door. Mark the installation site and check again if everything is done correctly.
  3. Creating a hole. Using a drill, make a hole in the floor and insert a dowel into it. For concrete pavement you need to use a hammer drill.

    A hole is made in the floor into which a plastic dowel is inserted.

  4. Limiter installation. Install the door stop and fix it with one or more self-tapping screws. If the limiter has the form of a hemisphere, it must be turned so that the canvas is in tight contact with the rubber pad.

    Using a self-tapping screw, fix the limiter

To keep the brass floor stopper shiny, it is recommended to periodically open it with varnish.

Mounting the wall stop

If you want the limiter not to interfere with free movement around the room, you can install it on the wall. Installation of wall models is carried out in the same sequence as floor options. The only difference will be that such a device is mounted on the wall, and not on the floor.

Repair of door opening limiters

A feature of door latches is that they have simple design, so they have virtually nothing to fail.

The main breakdowns of door stops will depend on the type of device:

  • failure of the rubber lining. If the rubber lining is damaged on the floor or wall model of the limiter, then it must be replaced;
  • weakening of the suction cup. If the suction cup is damaged in the vacuum limiter, then it will not provide reliable fixation of the web and it must be replaced;
  • damage to the stop for over-door models is eliminated by replacing such a device;
  • the weakening of the spring in the ball stopper leads to the fact that it cannot perform its functions. This device must be replaced.

In order not to scratch the wallpaper with a door handle, you can use special door stops Have you made an expensive repair and want it to stay in perfect condition for as long as possible? We advise you to purchase a door opening limiter. It will be able to protect your furniture and wall decoration from damage that can be caused by the handle of a rapidly opening design. Also, the latch is an actual purchase for apartments where small children live, it is they who most often suffer from blows from a suddenly opened door. Read on to learn how not to make a mistake in choosing such a stopper.

What is a door holder

There are many cases in which a door holder is simply necessary. This accessory is especially relevant if there are small children in the house, to whom a suddenly opened door can cause considerable harm. Also, a stopper is necessary if you want to keep the expensive wall decoration in its original form, because the door that opens due to a draft often hits the surface behind it.

An excellent device that will help fix the door in one position is the door stopper.

When a door stop is needed:

  • If you are afraid of scratching the walls or door handle, the stopper will be a real salvation for you;
  • If you plan to bring heavy furniture into the room, such a holder will help you fix the door in the open position;
  • When a baby appears in the house, who crawls or begins to walk, the door holder is very handy, he does not allow the little prankster to pinch his fingers and holds back the door during drafts.

On the this moment there is a huge variety of door stops suitable for most different interiors. These can be modern stainless steel holders, and wooden stoppers in the form of animal figures, and even devices sewn from fabric to hold doors open.

There are also stoppers with various mechanisms that make such accessories modern and very useful devices. Such devices, for example, include a latch with a built-in magnetic sensor.

Types of door stoppers

Door stoppers have their own classification. Due to the fact that such devices are the most different types, you can install them in a place convenient for yourself, make them part of the interior or hide them from prying eyes.

Acquainted with various types door stoppers can be in hardware stores

There are three main types of door holders. There are also not very common, but useful stoppers that are used in special cases. Knowing on what principles such devices work, you can choose the most suitable option for yourself.

Types of clamps:

  1. Wall holders can limit the opening of the door or prevent it from slamming. In the first case, a silicone or metal retainer is attached to a wall or furniture wall. Such a device will not allow the opening door to damage the finish. This accessory is especially relevant if you have a warm floor, on which it will not work to install a floor stopper. The holder, which prevents the door from slamming, has two positions: in the first, the canvas opens and closes absolutely freely, and if the stopper is lowered, it will not allow the door to slam shut.
  2. The floor clamp is mounted on the floor. This is one of the most popular types of stoppers. The design of such an accessory can be very different, which is why it enjoys such a hype.
  3. The door stopper is most convenient in apartments where small children live. This device limits the opening angle of the door, so that the canvas opened due to a draft will not harm your baby.
  4. A furniture door opener is also a very necessary thing. It is simply necessary if you own headsets with springless hinges or piano hangers. Such a device will protect the decoration of walls and furniture doors from damage.
  5. Stoppers for door handles allow you to fix the door in the closed position. They are magnetic and mechanical. Such accessories are very appropriate in bathrooms and parental bedrooms.

Also, door stoppers differ in the materials from which they are made. The choice of door holders must be made not only depending on the design of the room where they will be used, but also taking into account their technological features. So the holder for massive canvases must be made of metal, and the stopper, which will be installed on the wall, is best made of soft material.

Floor door holders: the principle of operation and incredible designs

Floor holders for doors are the most popular fixtures of this type. They differ original design and simple design. If you opted for a floor fixer, then you still have to decide which of the existing types of such devices will suit you best.

Floor stoppers made in the form of animal figures look especially original. It can be a funny hedgehog, a cute kitten or a devoted dog.

Floor holders for the door can have various shapes, which you can choose at your discretion

Stationary door holders are a device of two elements. The first part is a thin metal plate, and the second is a magnet. A piece of metal is installed at the bottom of the door leaf, and a magnetic device is attached in the place where the door should stop. Thus, the magnet attracts the metal to itself, and fixes the canvas in the desired position.

The stationary door holder is screwed to the floor in the right place. Such a device does not allow the structure to open wider than necessary. Since such an accessory is attached to the floor with self-tapping screws, it cannot be installed in rooms where a floor heating system is equipped. Otherwise, you may damage the heating elements.

The portable stopper consists of a thin part that can be pushed through the bottom of the door and a wide side that will hold the canvas in position. To install these accessories, you do not need to damage the floor covering. You can also buy one such device for the whole house, and rearrange it in the right room if necessary.

The holder, which is fixed at the bottom of the door, has a non-slip surface. Thus, the canvas cannot be moved from its place without applying a certain effort.

How to make a door stopper with your own hands

The door opening limiter is not difficult to do with your own hands. Creating such a device will not take you much time. The advantage of making a stopper yourself is not only to save money, but also that you can create an accessory with absolutely any design.

With your own hands, you can make both a stationary and a portable stopper. However, the second option looks more original.

It is quite possible to make a stopper for the door yourself, if you first carefully read the instructions and advice from professionals

A soft stopper is the easiest to make. To do this, you will need: fabric, sewing supplies, sintepuh and sand.

Such a door opener is a soft toy with a twisted tail. It is the tail that is placed under the door, and the body does not allow it to open.

The body with the tail of the animal is stuffed with sand, this part is responsible for holding the door in the desired position. The remaining elements of the product can be filled with sintepuh. Such a stopper looks very cute, but at the same time it is a convenient and functional thing.

Door stop options (video)

Door stoppers at first glance may seem like completely useless knick-knacks, but in some cases such a device is indispensable. You can purchase a door stop at a hardware store or make your own. Whichever option you choose, remember that all the accessories in the house should be in harmony with each other and with the surrounding decoration.
