April 13 marks the 150th anniversary of the birth Reverend Seraphim of Vyritsky. The Monk Seraphim (in the world Vasily Nikolaevich Muravyov; 1866–1949) is a confessor who took monastic vows during the years of persecution of the Church, a great elder who acquired many gifts of the Holy Spirit, a prayer book for all those who grieve and suffer.

As a child, the future elder read the lives of the saints and dreamed of monasticism. But the Lord judged differently: his father died, and instead of taking monastic vows, Vasily was destined to become the breadwinner of the family. When the young man, dreaming of monasticism, came to the Alexander Nevsky Lavra, he heard from one of the elders-schemists prophetic words that revealed the Providence of God about him: “Vasenka! You are destined to go through the path of the worldly, thorny, with many sorrows. Do it before God and conscience. The time will come when the Lord will reward you.” The whole further life of Vasily Nikolaevich in the world became a preparation for monastic life. It was a feat of obedience that lasted over 40 years.

Vasily Nikolaevich lived under the spiritual guidance of the famous elder hieromonk Barnabas from the Gethsemane skete, with the blessing he performed the Jesus Prayer and acquired unceasing prayer already at a young age. With the blessing of Father Barnabas, Vasily married the pious girl Olga Ivanovna.

The Lord was pleased that the young ascetic, before renouncing the world, went through the school of life, learned to understand people of different classes and help the poor. Outstanding abilities allowed the young man to become one of the largest fur traders in St. Petersburg.

Vasily Nikolaevich was distinguished by amazing mercy and sacrifice. Olga Ivanovna later admitted that, despite her kindness, even she sometimes found it difficult to understand her husband, who distributed the last from home and at the same time was incredibly happy. God alone knows how many poor and wretched people from the bottom of their hearts remembered his name in their fervent prayers.

During the years of the revolution, when many wealthy people in Russia transferred capital abroad, Vasily Nikolayevich paid generous severance pay to his employees and donated all his capital to the monasteries. In 1920, the couple took monastic vows.

Vasily Nikolaevich quickly grew from a novice to a schieeromonk, confessor of the Lavra. When he was tonsured into the great schema, he was named Seraphim - in honor of the holy Venerable Seraphim of Sarov, a miracle worker, whom he strove to imitate with all his might throughout his life. From 1930 until his death, Father Seraphim lived in Vyritsa and became here what all of Russia knows and remembers him - a famous elder who carried out a prophetic ministry, instructed people, comforted them in sorrows, healed them in illnesses, prayed for all of Russia .

At the end of 1927 Archbishop Alexy (Simansky) came to the confessor of the Alexander Nevsky Lavra for advice and prayer. Auntie returned from Vyritsa a completely different person - she only cried quietly, saying: “You are still just a child, but God's will be done!” On January 25, 1949, my sister and I arrived in Pyukhtitsa. Here we were immediately assigned to the elders in the cells, and our monastic life began.”

Alexander Albertovich Savich, engineer-hydrologist: “From the evacuation, I returned to Leningrad in an extremely emaciated state, with a heart defect and a very unstable nervous system. My physical inferiority caused, of course, moral inferiority. In the family and among acquaintances, I behaved ugly - grimacing, insolent, mimicking people. On the way to Father Seraphim's house, my aunt told me that I should kneel before the elder. I flatly refused to do so, of course, and generally behaved as if I were doing my aunt a favor. But when we entered the priest's cell, I was completely shocked by the fact that I very clearly felt the light coming from his eyes and as if filling me. I was filled with a feeling of extraordinary joy and love for the whole world... After the first visit to the elder, large abscesses began to appear all over my body, which erupted with the release of a significant amount of pus. Obviously, at the same time, some internal diseases left the body. Since then, I have not complained about my health. Accordingly, my behavior also normalized - I made many friends, including very close ones.

Natalia N. Simakova, visually impaired from birth, member of the Society of the Blind: “I never asked the priest for anything in terms of some earthly goods or health. The Lord blessed me to be blind. I did not even think about any healings and hoped that for this sorrow the Lord, perhaps, would remove some of my sins from me and help me in another. When I came to the elder for a blessing, he suddenly said to me: “And the children will have eyes! God will send a man…” Over time, I really got married. She gave birth to two children - a son and a daughter. Worked at home. Weaving bags to support the family. She also did everything at home.

Anna Yakovlevna Ryabova: “During the war, my friend lived in Vyritsa. It so happened that her six-year-old son fell from a very high tree. The boy didn't move or breathe. She also recalled how the elder said: “I will soon leave you, Metropolitan Gregory will arrange a new cell for me… And don’t forget to pray for me.” This meeting took place seven months before the death of the elder, after which it became known that the coffin for the burial of Father Seraphim had indeed been sent by Metropolitan Grigory (Chukov).
