Standard bathroom and toilet door dimensions: width and height

When changing interior doors, you need to carefully consider those that are installed at the entrance to the bathroom and toilet. The size of the opening and the material for them may differ from those that are installed for ordinary rooms.

Features of doors for bathrooms

When buying interior doors, most people are primarily guided by their appearance. When choosing a door unit for a bathroom or toilet, you need to consider some of the features that are typical for such rooms:

  • material of manufacture;

The dimensions of the passage to the bathroom may differ from the interior. A special microclimate puts forward increased requirements for materials.

Suitable door material

Taking into account the peculiarities of the operation of the door block at the entrance to the bathroom, you need to carefully consider the material of the canvas and the box.

Solid wood doors are widely used for bathrooms. They are resistant to humid microclimate and perform well during long-term operation.

Plastic doors are also often placed in the opening at the entrance to the toilet. Plastic and aluminum, from which they are made, are not subject to corrosion and temperature changes. In addition, plastic can be pasted over with a film, the color and texture are very diverse.

Glass is a good material for a toilet door. But for a bathroom or combined bathrooms, you need to take into account some of the features of this material. With high humidity and temperature changes, condensation is inevitable on the glass. Such a door will require constant care, otherwise its appearance will be spoiled.

If you want to install doors glued with natural veneer, then specify when buying whether they are covered with an additional layer of varnish. It will help protect the canvas from the influence of an unfavorable microclimate, which will prevent the canvas from swelling and the veneer from peeling off.

If the purchase of the box is planned separately from the canvas, then be sure to pay attention to what material was used to make it. MDF is not suitable for opening into the bathroom, as it absorbs moisture well and swells. This will quickly disable the doors. In the event that it is not possible to choose a box from another material, then before installing it from the inside, it must be treated with one or two layers of paint. This will help prevent moisture penetration and swelling of the material.

Standard dimensions of the opening to the bathroom

The standard width of the door leaf to the bathroom is 550 and 600 millimeters, the height is 1900 and 2000 millimeters. In new buildings, the width is increased to 700 millimeters, as is the case with interior doors. This is due to the fact that shower cabins and large bathtubs that need to be brought into the room are widely used. However, one should not rely on the accuracy of these figures. Therefore, if you decide to replace the doors to the toilet, then be sure to measure the dimensions of the opening.

The dimensions of the opening can be adjusted by increasing or decreasing it. But for small apartments, an increase can affect the ability to use the usable area, which is usually not enough. So, for example, next to the door, the size of which is 550 mm, you can put a sink, and by increasing the width, the washbasin simply does not fit.

Determining the size of the opening

The size of the door to the bathroom depends on the opening in which it will be installed. If a specialist is involved in the installation, he will take measurements and determine what size the door should be. If you will be doing the installation yourself, then to determine the parameters of the door block, you need to make measurements.

The height of the passage is measured from the floor to the ceiling. If there is no coating on the floor, then its thickness must be taken into account when measuring. Doors to the bathroom and toilet are usually equipped with a threshold, so its height must also be taken into account in the calculations.

Width is measured with a tape measure from one wall to another at several points. If the values differ greatly, then you need to align the opening.

Thickness or depth is measured in the same way as width. At the same time, consider the thickness of the wall decoration on both sides.

  • box width;
  • the size of the mounting gap;
  • the size of the gap between the door leaf and the frame;
  • gap between floor/threshold and canvas.

The width of the box can vary from 15 to 45 millimeters depending on the material. For MDF, it is usually 15-20 millimeters, and for wood - 30-45. The size of the mounting gap between the wall of the doorway and the frame is 1-3 centimeters. The distance between the canvas and the box is kept 3-4 millimeters. The ventilation gap at the bottom is left equal to 1-1.5 centimeters.

Knowing all these numbers, you can easily calculate the dimensions of the door.

When choosing doors to the bathroom and toilet, keep in mind that its width is usually less than that of interior doors. In addition to the dimensions, carefully consider the material of the canvas and the box. This will guarantee proper installation in the opening and long-term operation.
