Tips: how to update the seams between the tiles in the bathroom

Those people who have tile in the bathroom have probably noticed that over time it gets dirty and tarnishes. How to update the seams between the tiles in the bathroom? Often it's the seams, not the tiles. They ruin the look. There are quite a few methods, but in general they can be divided into 2 large types: cosmetic (cleaning the seams from dirt and covering them with a protective layer) and capital (complete replacement of the seam material).

1 Cosmetic way

The cosmetic method consists in cleaning and tinting the joints, in some cases a new layer is also applied to the joints on top of the old grout. First, the old grout must be washed and leveled. There are special detergents for tiles and seams, more expensive and worse. But if you are trying to save money and love "folk art", here are some tips for you:

  1. Soap solution. Grate soap (preferably laundry soap) and pour warm water over it. Stir until a liquid slurry forms. Apply with a sponge to the seams and rub. Gradually, mud foam will appear, which must be washed off. The method is simple but labor intensive.
  2. Soda solution. Mix baking soda with hydrogen peroxide in a ratio of 4:3. Apply gruel to the seams, rub a little and leave for a couple of hours. Then scrub with a brush and rinse. This method is time-consuming, but quite effective. True, it is not suitable for colored grout. Can "lead" the color.

If the tile was laid a long time ago, the seams began to chip and fall apart and there is a desire to close the holes "once and for a long time", or just tired of constant cosmetic tinting, it makes sense to do a complete replacement of the material of the seams.

Removing old grout from a joint

First, of course, you need to remove the old grout. If possible, to the maximum depth and so as not to pick off the tile and scratch it. There is a special tool, it is called a "seam opener". Although many use a simple spatula. You shouldn't push too hard. Usually old grout falls apart easily. With excessive force, there is always a risk of damaging the edges of the tile, scratching, etc. Insert the tool between the seams and press lightly.
