Small bathroom renovation. Features of small spaces

Unfortunately, not all owners of small apartments are satisfied with the size of their bathrooms. Often the total area of the premises does not exceed 3-4 square meters, which from time to time require repair and renovation. Nevertheless, small rooms are not without advantages: in terms of financial costs, it will be inexpensive.

Significant savings will allow small costs for the purchase of building materials and the wages of specialists who will carry out repairs. Finishing a small area in a room should solve two problems at once:

  • improving the aesthetics of the room;
  • visual increase in space.

The financial side of the issue

It must begin with design, only then will it be possible to achieve the desired result. To do this, it is not necessary to resort to the services of professional designers, you can consider typical repair options in a small bathroom, among which there is sure to be one that suits you:

  • Before starting repairs, you need to draw up an estimate in order to have an idea of the financial costs that you will have to incur. Estimate how much you can spend on renovating a small bathroom, and who will do it: you or a team of builders;
  • At least 10% more should be added to the cost of the necessary materials, because they should be bought with some margin. Then you do not have to buy building materials that can deteriorate during the repair process;
  • If you are going to tile the walls, keep in mind that approximately 3 square meters of the room go to the door and the bath (shower). Therefore, do not make mistakes in the calculation, otherwise you will waste money on extra materials.

Repair of small bathrooms involves compliance with the following basic principles:

  • Surfaces should be designed in light colors;
  • In the interior, it is desirable to use mirrors to visually enlarge the space;
  • For bath accessories, it is desirable to make niches in the wall, so the room will seem larger.

Repair options can be very diverse, but when you go to the store for building materials, in any case you will have to purchase:

  • tiles or tiles for walls and floors;
  • sealant;
  • special tile adhesive;
  • self-tapping screws;
  • wooden beams for ceiling lathing (PVC panels will be attached to them);
  • front corners and PVC panels;
  • putty;
  • cement, waterproof GKL (drywall);
  • metal profiles.

Start of repair

Repairs in rooms always begin with rough work:

  • First you have to take out all the plumbing and furniture from the room;
  • The old finish (tile, tile, paint) is cleaned off the surfaces;
  • All communications are repaired, if necessary;
  • The condition of the electrical wiring and ventilation systems is checked.

Now, before renovating a small bathroom, you need to level all surfaces, since tiling does not tolerate curved walls and floors.

How to properly level surfaces?

Repairing a small bathroom is not easy, especially if you do it yourself. To make the walls perfectly even, you will have to apply plaster layers, and then treat them with a putty mixture. In principle, in order not to do this, you can use a special waterproof drywall, which is mounted as follows:

  • It is necessary to mark the walls in increments of approximately 0.6 m (this is the traditional width of one sheet of plasterboard). The marking is done vertically, in the future a metal profile will be installed in these places, which will be sheathed with drywall;
  • Metal strips are measured in height and cut with special scissors for metal;
  • On each of the walls you need to fix the guide strips. To do this, using a perforator, holes are made in the wall, where dowels are hammered;
  • Then longitudinal metal strips are installed;
  • Along the vertical lines marked with a marker, aluminum suspensions are mounted at an interval of 25 cm;
  • All installed vertical bars must fit into the guides that were previously fixed;
  • Then the installed crate is sheathed with sheets of plasterboard;
  • All joints should be treated with sickle and putty.

Tip: Renovation of a small bathroom, which is adjacent to the walls of a neighboring apartment, requires additional soundproofing. To do this, special materials are laid in the niches of the battens, which have good soundproofing properties.

How to veneer surfaces?

The cladding phase always starts from the floor:

  • First, tile adhesive is applied to the floor, while pouring starts from the corner of the room. Special plastic separators in the form of crosses are inserted between the laid squares of tiles;
  • When the work is completed, all inter-tile seams should be treated with sealant;
  • Next, the seams are finished with a special putty, which matches the tone of the tile;
  • Installation of tiles on the walls. A photo of a repair in a small bathroom at the next stage demonstrates the wall finishing process, which is practically no different from laying tiles on the floor;
  • Only you need to lay tiles on the walls from below, and not from above. If financial possibilities do not allow tiling the walls, you can use PVC panels, which will cost several times cheaper;
  • To avoid unnecessary fuss with the ceiling, PVC panels can be used. Then you do not have to level the surface and clean it. It is enough just to make a crate of bars and sheathe it with panels of the right size.

How to place plumbing?

Not easy, but possible. When all the main work is completed, you should think about how to mask all communications suitable for plumbing so that they do not spoil the entire design of the room.

Often, for these purposes, special niches are made in the walls, or metal profiles are installed, which are sewn up with sheets of plasterboard. All the unsightly fittings are hidden under them.
