What size bathroom door is considered optimal in terms of ergonomics and design

It seems to many that the size of the door to the bathroom does not really matter. But this is an erroneous opinion: as in any other business, there are many nuances that must be taken into account. Naturally, if an experienced specialist will deal with the matter, you can not delve into the essence of the process, but if you have a desire to deal with the problem on your own, you should first familiarize yourself with the following information.

Almost all door manufacturers adhere to international standards governing the geometric dimensions of the leaf and the box. The height is the same - 2 m, but the standard dimensions of the bathroom doors are different in width: 1000, 900, 800, 700, 600, 400 mm. In the houses of the old building (which include the so-called "Khrushchev"), the size of the bathroom doors is the same in width - 600 mm, in new buildings it is slightly larger - 700 mm. The designers did not pursue the goal of improving living conditions, it was simply necessary to solve the problem of installing modern bathtubs and shower cabins: they did not fit in narrow passages.

When choosing a door to the bathroom, it is necessary to take into account the dimensions of the doorway.

A wider doorway, on the one hand, is much more convenient, and on the other hand, it reduces the useful area of the room. Because of this, a washing machine or a laundry box often does not fit. Or you have to install a smaller washbasin, and this is not very comfortable to use.

When installing the box, it should be borne in mind that there should be a place for mounting foam in the doorway

The nuances of installing custom-sized doors in the bathroom

In specialized stores where doors are sold, bathroom sizes are standard (600, 700 mm, etc.). But during installation it is often found that in fact their width is several millimeters larger. The reason is that from the outside the door leaf is decorated with veneer, which increases the canvas. In some cases, this can play a fatal role: the door with the frame will not fit in the opening and it will have to be expanded. And this is not always possible: ceramic tiles, which are already lined with walls, may interfere. The problem will not disappear even if the cladding has not yet been completed: it is easier to reduce the door leaf than to cut the tiles. Therefore, before deciding what the size of the door to the bathroom should be, you should perform calculations, taking into account the parameters of the finishing materials.

Measuring the width and height of the doorway should precede the purchase of a bathroom door

The height of the door may also differ from the declared one - in some cases up to 10 mm. You can adjust them to the desired size: you just need to cut off the excess. But before proceeding with this, it is necessary to find out how and from what these doors are assembled. There are canvases that cannot be reduced: these are “voids” and MDF doors. By cutting off part of the material, we open access to moisture to the core of the structure. As a result, everything swells and becomes unusable.

Only structures assembled on the basis of a wooden frame can be reduced in height and width. If you cut off 3-5 mm from them at the edges, nothing will happen. But you should immediately treat the cut site with a protective agent: putty, antiseptic, paintwork material.

It is impossible to saw off with a simple jigsaw: no matter how hard you try, the edge will still not work out even. We'll have to file, trim, level with putty. It is better to use a high-speed circular saw: these are used by chipboard sawmills. But to do this in the absence of skills in working with such equipment is not recommended.

Sliding structures will help save usable space

What should be the thickness of the door frame

Bathroom doors are chosen not only in width and height: the dimensions of the door frame parts also matter. It is necessary that the whole structure fits well into the opening. Otherwise, you will either have to expand it, or install additional trims. This again threatens with problems when facing with ceramic tiles.

It is also important that the box is no narrower and no wider than the wall (including the facing material). Then stuffing cashing will not cause difficulties. However, it should be remembered: the thicker the material, the more resistant it is to moisture. Therefore, if for the bathroom it is possible to choose a thicker door leaf with an appropriate frame, this should be done even at the expense of aesthetic appeal.

Before you opt for a non-standard solution, you should carefully calculate everything and weigh all the pros and cons

Correctly choose, install, and even more so fit the door leaf and frame to the entrance to the bathroom will help specialists familiar with carpentry. You can’t save on this: rework will cost more.
